Event junkies don't care for the Irish national team vs subpar opposition. If Ireland vs Australia or Ireland vs South Africa were held in Croke Park, the attendance wouldn't be that different.
Meanwhile, thousands show up to get autographs of Cristiano Ronaldo, etc.
You're actually telling me that the people of Munster not wanting to see Irealdn Reserves vs Tim Cahill or Stephen Pienaar means they don't want to see Lionel Messi, David Villa, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Xavi, Iniesta, Bojan? (unsure how many of these would've been available)
Only Ibrahimovic and Bojan would have been there. Still, it would have outsold the Ireland games, but I'm not convinced it would have been a sell-out.
I heard Messi was confirmed? Then again, World Cup, Catalonian national side . . . who knows. Still, a Shels XI in Barcelona jerseys would pull more than SA or Australia.
Rogers; Shelley, Oman, Peers, Powell; Guy, Keegan, Williams, Brennan; Ndo, Madden.
Kusczak, Evans, Smalling, Vidic, O'Shea, Valencia, Carrick, Gibson, Park, Rooney, Owen
Did Sadlier just say "Gary Keegan"?
Maybe, I heard some fairly hefty ticket prices rumoured. That said, I'd like to think we'd have sold most of the tickets before the final Barca squad was announced, and it was in the contract that we paid them less for each star player that wasn't featured.
That's all beside the point though. The point that jbyrne doesn't want to accept is that the FAI didn't refuse to sanction the friendly because they wanted to save Limerick from losing money, they did it because they've decided that any real money-making friendlies will be have to be at the Aviva, so the FAI get the cash.
The 15,000 attendance cap in the third-party contract, and Delaney's admission that the clause is 'all about money' to Marian Finucane (I think) make that pretty obvious.
Love the Airtricity League XI jersey!
United one ain't bad either, mind.
Was that Monaghan's Brian Gartland doing the piece at the start?
