That's a decent team. Personally would still pick Smallbone, I think the setup was the problem more than him on Saturday. Would push Knight further forward and hold McAteer back as a sub. But otherwise that team looks about right.
The actual team will look nothing like that of course.
Two day turnaround so can’t make too much change, (and also without undermining everything that’s gone before). But extra body in the middle is foremost in my mind. Knight for Idah. Also would keep Smallbone in the team. I think you just need a Smallbone to link play and hopefully keep possession. Molumby's and Knight’s aggression and energy gives him more of the opportunity to do that. He’s capable of getting a goal as well.

doherty is brutal but i expect him to start at right back. i'd have o'shea in ahead of scales for brady, just don't fancy scales at full back and o'shea is at least quick.

Yeah, Scales has struggled at full back since leaving the LoI. He's a centre half at international level. He could probably fill in there in a pinch, but I would sooner experiment with O'Shea there than Scales.

John O'Shea faced a grilling at FAI headquarters this morning regarding who was currently in charge of the Ireland team, ahead of Tuesday’s UEFA Nations League clash with Greece.
Ireland come into the game off the back of a comprehensive defeat to England on Saturday evening, and while Heimir Hallgrimsson has said that he was taking a back seat for these opening games, O’Shea emphsised that it was the Icelandic coach who was firmly in charge of affairs.
When asked about Hallgrimsson’s absence from the pre-match press conference ahead of tomorrow's game, O'Shea said that the plan for him to attend was already in place.
The head coach is expected to talk to the media on the day before the game, however, on this occasion, the assistant coach, O’Shea, attended the media briefing at the Sport Ireland Campus in his place, accompanied by goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher.
"It's very simple, this plan was in place beforehand and it's obviously to give the boss as much time in terms of preparation, the quick turnaround in the games, that was always the case so there is no change in anything," said O’Shea.
"No fear at all," replied the former interim manager, when asked would it lead to confusion among the players as who is in charge.
"The boss is the boss and there are clear lines on that. As I mentioned, this is the plan that was in place beforehand, and we felt there was no reason to change it."
When pushed for further insight into the choice of candidate for media duties, considering UEFA regulations state the manager/head coach must speak to the media on eve of game, barring suspension, O’Shea was adamant that he was neither the boss nor did he consider his position as a leading role.
"It’s not a leading role, I’m the assistant," said O’Shea. "The leader is the boss and that is clear.
"The full focus on the plan beforehand, this was always in place in our itinerary so that was always the case…it’s a quick turnaround when you are trying to get things sorted and this was always the case, that was the plan beforehand and it is full focus on Greece.
"It’s clear, I’m the assistant," again, O’Shea having to respond to another question about confusion in the camp.
"I don’t know why there has to be this constant, the boss is the boss, it’s very simple. The players know that, you can ask Caoimhín about that. The meetings that were coming across, the plans in place.
"So I don’t know why you have to keep going on about that. For me personally, it’s clear from the staff’s point of view and the players’ point of view

Sure, agree. :-) Thinking how best to salvage the situation we find ourselves in. A loss to Greece puts us odds for relegation imo. Given we have played the same way the last five games, and presumably all training work has been done to play that specific formation, abandoning it with a two-day turnaround for a make-or-break game is not what I’d do. I’d keep changes to the minimum but drop Idah for Knight, and put that extra body in the middle. That doesn’t really compromise what’s been done off the field up to now, but addresses the main weakness England exploited.Quote:

I think if HH was taking over my office, I'd be very happy with his sit back and observe and see how things operate approach. It makes sense in that sort of environment not to make sweeping changes and risk upsetting things for the sake of it. But in terms of managing an international football team, I just don't see how it works. The whole point of appointing him was to refresh things and try something a bit different, Stephen Kenny tried things and changed things, but had very limited success. At least everyone knew Kenny wanted to play more possession football and wanted to play a more modern style. Clearly it wasn't working and HH was appointed to try and fix it, so just sitting back and observing the status quo is almost inexcusable. I can maybe see why he wanted to push away expectations for the England game, it was always going to be a loss so he might as well just say he's relying on the assistants and let them take the hit.
For the Greece game, he has to take the reigns now. Sitting back and watching more of the same is not going to teach him anything. All he had to do was watch the 4 friendlies under O'Shea if he needed evidence that change was needed. The England game has underlined that further. If there's no evidence of an actual game plan and some strategic thinking in terms or personnel and shape then things are looking very bleak.
Whole situation is a farce. It seems the FAI wanted to appoint JOS, they found a way to do it by appointment of a fake front man and Canham has gotten a promotion for doing it.
There was some startings of discontent during the second half of the England game - general moans at another aimless hoof up the pitch that was about 40 yards away from anyone in a green shirt - and while I think England was always a free hit, I wonder if the performance against Greece is as ropey as Saturday, and if people latch on to the "Learning on the job" aspect of things, could you see the crowd turning on him maybe by the end of the Nations League?Quote:

I find it hard to believe these players can't play 442, 433 or whatever at short notice especially if the role they are assigned is a natural for for them. In my suggested starting XI and the modifications suggested by others not one player is being asked to play a role or in a position of the pitch he's not familiar with or equipped to play.

I think I seen CTP saying something along the lines of that Hallgrimsson will realize very quickly we are not like Iceland if this constant deferring to O'Shea continues. We are an extremely demanding fanbase and the 8 month search for the manager p!ssed so many people off that there really needs to be a bit of hitting the ground running or the fans will turn very quickly and we'll see a lot of empty seats for the Finland game. There were other issues between both, passing out for the back, one where Collins passed to Scales and Scales assumed it wasn’t for him cause of the pace it was hit and didn’t go for it and the Greek lad got it and Collins berated him. Just before half time, they broke on us and Collins did his best job of non-defending you’ll ever see - plays the guy onside, doesn’t engage him, doesn’t really try block the cross and they score from it, slightly lucky as a scuffed shot goes straight to their man.
Collins got taken off at half time and Scales moved to centre half. Scales had a good game there. Atmosphere was gone 2-0 down and we never recovered and didn’t really create enough (i think Robinson hit the post and Doherty had a header that the keeper saved well). Meanwhile Bazunu made a good few saves to keep it at 2. Probably tactically a better set up but just a really poor performance after the initial few mins. The Greeks got their goals and did a good job of dampening expectations.
I watched the really short highlights I could find of Greece Finland and they looked equally dangerous out wide, with Tsimikas overlapping much more. I do think it’s probably a game for 4-3-3 - but I’d rather go with 5-2-3 over 5-3-2 - you just don’t want their fullbacks getting free reign, maybe the compromise is playing Knight out wide which allows you to pull him into midfield and go man for man with your left centre half and left wing back if the midfield is being over run.
I do think the makeup of the squad is really hampering our ability to changes things tactically and calling up 23 vs 25/26/27/28. If you’re playing with wingers, you’d like Mikey Johnston to be there. If you’re starting with 3 in midfield, you’d like more than 4 midfielders to be in the squad and either Azaz or McGrath or both on the bench.
Just for compare / contrast here are a couple of bits & bear in mind Carsley is in his role less time than HH & yes, he knows all his players already, granted, however.

Point is he's in the job less time & had prepped for either outcome. So, early days with HH, too early for verdicts etc but our guy still won't own any aspect of his role & the comparison is stark.
I'm not sure I agree with the bits in bold - I don't see any pigs' heads being thrown on to the pitch any time soon, and if Canham buys us all a few pints we'll be grand - but I agree with the rest of it. I think it's the cumulation of the Kenny era, the huge drawn-out search for a manager and the hands off approach so far (I think it was texidub who put it very well that he hasn't being paid €100k so far to learn about us) - if you add more disjointed performances like Tuesday, things could get tricky. I think Kenny's case was always helped by the fact he was clearly trying to get us to play nice stuff and that'll always help a manager in trouble.Quote:

We played great against Czechs at home (1-1) after losing 5-2 in Cyprus.
I loathe the term “passion” in football but if you’re second best a bit of fight certainly helps. We showed that in the above game. I’d expect nothing less tomorrow.
Not getting any points tonight would be a disaster for the new management ("same as the old management" to mangle a political line). Whatever you think about Kenny, as things stand, his Ireland team performed better against France and Portugal than we did against England - a sobering thought.
Expecting a loss, would be satisfied with a draw and delighted with a win. Rarely felt so flat and pessimistic before an Ireland match.
I am finding it difficult to be optimistic, and worry Greece are in fact quite good and maybe even better than last time around, while it is very tough to know where we are. As I said before I'll be happy enough to give him some time, but I'm not sure the wider public have any patience left to give. Not just because of the England match, but probably *gestures at everything* since Champaign football, there has been little joy, the WNT qualifying for a world cup aside. These are angry times we live in, try not to be too worked up no matter what happens, it can still get better :D
If it gets worse and we end up in league C, at least we will have probably hit rock bottom, and have an opportunity to begin the climb again. I've been banging the we need massive investment domestically, to have any real long term success drum for a long time, and that is still where I stand, much else is rearranging deckchairs on the titanic. A 4-2-3-1 formation would make me at least feel like we're trying stuff thou.

Just hoping for a few changes tonight. I couldn't even drag myself to travel for the game today. It's been tougher and tougher traveling for games this year and it'll make the season ticket renewal choice a difficult one next year.
