Strange time to announce that. Only a month until the end of the season, and still in with a shout for Europe.
I'm not surprised after seeing his post match interview on Soccer Republic. He looked utterly frustrated and confused with the performance.
They'd have to win their last 4 matches and overturn a 33 goal deficit while Rovers lose their last 4 to qualify for Europe.Quote:

I'm surprised he lasted so long after almost getting Pats relegated last year. They've been on a steady decline over the last few seasons and things have obviously gone a bit stale at the club.
He seems like a very genuine man and his team played a nice style of football. He had some success, but at a high cost, Pats were paying out serious money for a few seasons, so it's no surprise to see them slide down the table now that Kelleher has tightened the purse strings. You can't play the same style with vastly inferior players.
It's probably the best move for both parties.

The league cup wins were nice and winning the league was obviously brilliant but the Cup win in 2014 was the highlight for me and many Pats fans, an emotional night for a lot of people and one we'll never forget. He leaves (again) as a club legend.
Keith Long would be a good move for Pats.
It's been coming, though I wonder if something happened that prompted the timing of it, seems strange considering the season is as good as over that he wouldn't see it out and have a proper send off that would make the remaining games worth something. A shame that Bohs game is the one he'll go out on.
Can't speak highly enough of Liam though, all he's brought to the club far outweighs the mediocrity of the last couple of seasons and he's provided myself - and I presume most Pats supporters - with some of my best memories in football. Some of the football it the league and cup winning seasons was the best the league had seen in a good while (aesthetically at least) but it was hard to keep that going when he didn't really have the means to do so. Hopefully like Brian Kerr he'll still be present in Richmond from time to time.
Who replaces him is an interesting one. I'm not sure there's a single realistic name that's been floated about that I wouldn't have my reservations over. I'd imagine Ger will take over for the remainder of the season, could be a trial run?

I would say his assistant Trevor Croly is a far more likely appointment although I believe he has a day job, so giving that up for full time football may not be an option. A very highly regarded coach, yet to really prove himself as a manager.Quote:

isnt Keith Long an ex player of St Pats? surprised with Buckley not longer there. Liam Kelly is very prominent in management in the LSL surely he would be a great candidate?
Can see why Long would be mentioned but can’t see why he would be interested. Crolly was linked with Pats last year (with Buckley moving to a general manager role ‘upstairs’) so possibly something there but Crolly was burned in Mordor so might not be up for a Manager’s job
Now his “issue” with previous player is resolved Nutsey (former Pats player) is presumably available. His Waterford gig is only part time scouting I believe ?
Wouldn't like Croly. Don't like the way he left Pats last time. Keith Long would be good, but as the Bohs fans here have said, I can't see much incentive for him to leave Bohs for us, unless we are throwing serious money a him, both wage wise and in terms of playing budget. No to Nutsy, especially without a big budget. Collie O'Neill could be a good option. Wouldn't mind giving Ger O'Brien a shot, he might be caretaker until the end of the season. Not much point in rushing an appointment at this stage I don't think.Quote:

Harry Kenny would be the safe choice imo. Rovers will have to hurry up or they might miss out on their supporters choice. Collie O'Neill would be the 'gamble' though not much of one. Martin Russell would be a logical candidate; relatively decent manager and a former Pats player.
I don't think his time at Limerick enhanced his reputation to be honest. There were definitely mitigating factors, but he also definitely messed up a lot.
Fully agree RE Buckley, real gent and a manager that always played the game the right way. Think Pats have been fair to him, expected him to go last year. Pats have stagnated last couple of seasons and Saturdays surrender was obviously the last straw. Overall his time there was a success just need a change to shake things up a bit. Martin Russell could be a good fit (given Crollys previous departure clearly still rankles), depends on what the clubs aims are.Quote:
