It happened.
The real Ireland played the Rep. of Irl.
UCD won. It's a problem for both sides.
(It's not my fault, per se. Brought a mate of mine, continues to remind me who I was chanting for 'the Real Ireland'. He didn't believe another Ireland, but RoI, could exsist. That wasn't his fault either).
Mid-1990's. Tolka Park.....em...Ireland were in Green. UCD won, that's not anybody's fault.
You're a bit odd....
Yes in approx 1977. I can't remember the score but a Bass LoI XI played the Republic of Ireland
Didn't an eircom league selection take on Rep or Ireland "B" about 7/8 years ago? I think Neale Fenn was on the "B" selection.
In matches against Skyreland B, the results were:
17-3-97, Tolka Park
LoI XI: 1 (Morley)
RoI B: 1 (Foley)
2-2-99, Carlisle Grounds
LoI XI: 3 (Coughlan, Gormley (pen), Cousins)
RoI B: 4 (Fenn 2, Clare 2)
My uncle played in that game in 97. Kieran'Tarzan' O Brien, if i remember he was the only first div player in the squad. Toured America in 96 and the games were on Tele over there.Got no 2 american jersey, Kassey Keller was in the goal that day. Also played against Croatia year before they finished third at world cup. 2-2 i think it was. After the game against Ireland he went to look for a jersey and Roy Keane and Kevin Kilbane were the only lads left in dressing room. Keane couldn't as it was being auctioned and it was Killers first Cap, so what did Mick Byrne do, said here lad, and threw him a lovely pair of socks. Quality. HA
LOI select used to play regularly in mid to late 90s. I used to have records
LOI Select games that I'm aware of against Oireland were :
- 21/09/77 : Bass League vs ROI, Dalymount.
- 17/03/97 : LOI Select vs ROI B, Tolka Park.
- 09/02/99 : National League XI vs ROI B, Carlisle Grounds.

yep that's right. i have the report from the irish independent somewhere - well a photocopy. noel dunne was the reporter. i think mick martin scored for ireland. the irish goalie was one of those lads who had just one internation cap... kearins or kearns i think. i'll see if i can find the report and scan it in.
It's something the FAI should look into arranging, it could generate a bit more interest in the league. Play a series of 3 or 4 games, say Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick. Maybe use it as a chance to try out new international players as well.
I'd say it would have been a lot more likely to happen under Kerr than Trapattoni though.
LOI select also played against Man Utd in Tolka Park in the mid 90s. Pretty sure it was July 1996 but not 100% sure.
LOI fans around in the `70`s still speak in hushed tones of a match between L`of I selection and Torpedo Moscow in `75`or `76. Supposedly a "crack Eastern European outfit" as Jimmy Mc Gee used to say...... 0-0
Truly the most dreadful match in the annals of Association Football.
There was also a National League XI vs. IFK Gothenburg game at Tolka Park in 1994. The NL XI won 1-0 with a fourteenth minute goal from Paul Curran.
Team was:
NL XI: O'Neill (Derry City), Vaudequin (Derry City), Best (Bohemians), Curran (Derry City), Coady (Dundalk, cap't), Mooney (Shelbourne), Byrne (Shelbourne), Gauld (Derry City), Treacy (Shamrock Rovers), Woods (Cork City), Arkins (Shelbourne.) SUBS: Hanrahan (Bohemians) for Best, McGrath (Shamrock Rovers) for Treacy, Francis (Cóbh) for Woods, Morley (Cork City) for Arkins.
I missed another LoI vs. RoI game, the Eoin Hand testimonial at Tolka Park on September 2nd 1997. Mick's boys dried their eyes over Princess Diana's death long enough to win 3-0 (Keane, Kennedy, Cascarino.)
The LOI won 3 - 0, Felix Healy, Liam Coyle and John Mannion all scored - I have a spare programme if anyone wants one.
Would anyone know of any of the results and team - line-ups for any of the following games:
National League v ROI B - Eoin Hand Testimonial - 3 Sept 97
National League v Vauxhall Conference - 25 Feb 97
National League v ROI B - 17 March 97
National League U-23 v League of Wales (At Cobh) - 2 April 96
National League v Croatia (At Drogheda) - 5 June 96
League of Wales v National League (In Wales) - 4 March 97
Bord Gais League v Liverpool - 19 Oct 1993
Bord Gais League v Celtic / Man City - 17/18 July 1992
Bord Gais League v Leeds - 23 July 1993
Bord Gais League v RCS (Czech Rep) - 17 Aug 93
League of Wales v Bord Gais League - Oct 1994
National League v Manchester United - 28 July 96
National League v Korea Olympic - 11 June 96
LOI Selection v Celtic (Limerick) - 8 March 94
National League v Everton (Terry Eviston Test) - 10 May 96
This is for some research I am doing - and when I am finished I will gladly share with anyone else interested.
Many thanks,
Joe
Steve,
I am actually trying to record all representative games that Derry City players played in - as I am a big Derry City fan - my list is about 50% complete - but if you know of any appearance by Derry City players that would be very helpful too.
Didn't Liverpool play an LOI XI in Lansdowne in the early 90's?
First game under lights at lansdowne iirc, I went with a busload of Liverpool fans, they kept asking why I was supporting the league of Ireland side, "eh because I'm Irish?"
Only thing I remember from it was Billy Woods played left back and looked a class above anything on both sides
If the National side get to play someone big to open the new Aviva Stadium should a league select not as well??
I seem to remember being at a LoI vs Irish league game in Richmond maybe early 90's. Think Billy Woods was great that night also. Although I maybe mistaken. Its a bit of a blur.
A League of Ireland team played a mexican team in Los Angeles in 1988. Jim McLoughlin was the manager and I'd be surprised if there wasn't a player or two from Derry on that squad. I was at the game but i can't find any reference to it on the web after (admittedly) only a small bit of digging. The Mexican team won the game as far as i can remember.
I have a fair amount of games and results so far - I can send people copies if they wish - or can just post them here for all to see if interested ?
Alex Krstic also guested for Shamrock Rovers v Man United in March 1987
I think Da Gama and Krstic played in the Pat Jennings Testmonial game 3 Dec 1986 - Krstic scored.
