    Loi select

Did a LOI select ever play our national team as a friendly or warm up? Not including testimonial type messing? Apart from Fenlons under 23s does that squad still exist? Id love to see our league select take on the national side!!

    It happened.
The real Ireland played the Rep. of Irl.
UCD won. It's a problem for both sides.

(It's not my fault, per se. Brought a mate of mine, continues to remind me who I was chanting for 'the Real Ireland'. He didn't believe another Ireland, but RoI, could exsist. That wasn't his fault either).

Mid-1990's. Tolka Park.....em...Ireland were in Green. UCD won, that's not anybody's fault.

Didn't an eircom league selection take on Rep or Ireland "B" about 7/8 years ago? I think Neale Fenn was on the "B" selection.

In matches against Skyreland B, the results were:

    17-3-97, Tolka Park
    LoI XI: 1 (Morley)
    RoI B: 1 (Foley)

    2-2-99, Carlisle Grounds
LoI XI: 3 (Coughlan, Gormley (pen), Cousins)
    RoI B: 4 (Fenn 2, Clare 2)

That was the coldest night I've ever experienced at a match in my life that night. If I remember correctly it was a particularly nasty match.

My uncle played in that game in 97. Kieran'Tarzan' O Brien, if i remember he was the only first div player in the squad. Toured America in 96 and the games were on Tele over there.Got no 2 american jersey, Kassey Keller was in the goal that day. Also played against Croatia year before they finished third at world cup. 2-2 i think it was. After the game against Ireland he went to look for a jersey and Roy Keane and Kevin Kilbane were the only lads left in dressing room. Keane couldn't as it was being auctioned and it was Killers first Cap, so what did Mick Byrne do, said here lad, and threw him a lovely pair of socks. Quality. HA

LOI Select games that I'm aware of against Oireland were :

    - 21/09/77 : Bass League vs ROI, Dalymount.
    - 17/03/97 : LOI Select vs ROI B, Tolka Park.
    - 09/02/99 : National League XI vs ROI B, Carlisle Grounds.

yep that's right. i have the report from the irish independent somewhere - well a photocopy. noel dunne was the reporter. i think mick martin scored for ireland. the irish goalie was one of those lads who had just one internation cap... kearins or kearns i think. i'll see if i can find the report and scan it in.

It's something the FAI should look into arranging, it could generate a bit more interest in the league. Play a series of 3 or 4 games, say Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick. Maybe use it as a chance to try out new international players as well.

I'd say it would have been a lot more likely to happen under Kerr than Trapattoni though.

LOI select also played against Man Utd in Tolka Park in the mid 90s. Pretty sure it was July 1996 but not 100% sure.

LOI fans around in the `70`s still speak in hushed tones of a match between L`of I selection and Torpedo Moscow in `75`or `76. Supposedly a "crack Eastern European outfit" as Jimmy Mc Gee used to say...... 0-0
Truly the most dreadful match in the annals of Association Football.

There was also a National League XI vs. IFK Gothenburg game at Tolka Park in 1994. The NL XI won 1-0 with a fourteenth minute goal from Paul Curran.

    Team was:

NL XI: O'Neill (Derry City), Vaudequin (Derry City), Best (Bohemians), Curran (Derry City), Coady (Dundalk, cap't), Mooney (Shelbourne), Byrne (Shelbourne), Gauld (Derry City), Treacy (Shamrock Rovers), Woods (Cork City), Arkins (Shelbourne.) SUBS: Hanrahan (Bohemians) for Best, McGrath (Shamrock Rovers) for Treacy, Francis (Cóbh) for Woods, Morley (Cork City) for Arkins.

I recall that was arranged cos Gothenburg has just eliminated Man U from Europe and since it was out of season for them they wanted a friendly before their next tie.

In other words that was a great performance and result for the LOI.
    Together with all our hearts.
