Legend indeed. RIP.
Wasn't planning on coming online tonight till I heard that news on the radio, glad to see someone had started a thread.
Legend is a term bandied about too easy in a lot of cases but not in this one. A true legend, a gentleman to boot who also provided us with another generation of men proud to wear the green despite being born abroad.
He'll be sadly missed. R.I.P.
Started his career at Bray Wanderers. Certainly among the all time greats of Irish football.
Go ndeanaidh Dia Trocaire ar a amam dhilis
RIP, thoughts and prayers with his family
Statistically he was also our best ever manager (with a 100% success rate). One friendly game in charge versus Switzerland between the Giles and Hand regimes.
Right up there with Shay and Packie as our best goalkeeper. May he rest in peace.
Only saw him play for Ireland a couple of times, but from all accounts a true gentleman and a great player.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis
Very sad to hear he died (young enough) in those circumstances.
The legend tag is no overstatement and a great character to boot.
I have some distant memories of seeing him play in goals for Ireland, he was a supremely elegant and skillful goalkeeper.
RIP.
sorry not really the thread but:
"He is the Republic of Ireland's most capped goalkeeper after Paddy Bonner, winning 47 caps for his country. "
What?!
He was first choice for about 12 years and probably played in almost every game in those years.
Afair, he had a shoulder injury throughout much of his career not just at the end when it was banjaxed.
Very sad news, a true Irish legend. I wouldn't put Packie Bonner in the same league as Shay or Alan Kelly, great penalty save aside. RIP
Very disappointed to see only a paragraph in the Indo about this today, sincerley hope there'll be a proper obituary over the next day or so.
Given his stature in the game (how many Irish players have stands named after them in the UK) it's the least he deserves.
Compare that to to coverage given to Jack Kyles sad death a few weeks back and it speaks volumes about the media's alleigences.
Thanks for your services to Irish football
and condolences to family and friends.
RIP Alan Kelly.
RIP
Alan Kelly
Sad news. I remember him as a player, good keeper.
D9-69er: Jimmy McIlroy at Burnley is the only other I can think of.
Sad timing too, with PNE's biggest game in years around the corner. I expect a huge ovation at both Wembley & the Cottage.
Yes, Ireland plays Nigeria at Craven Cottage on Friday 29th May.
Ireland are playing at Craven Cottage next week.
Wasn't aware he was ill. Never saw him play, but well aware of his standing within the game, here and in Preston. RIP. :(
And also in the USAQuote:
but well aware of his standing within the game, here and in Preston
Saw Alan playing for Ireland in the early 1970s and he never let us down. I wonder are there any other father/son combinations who have both played for their country as goalkeepers.
Has Kasper Schmeichel played for Denmark?
Gary Kelly was in several squads but I don't think he was ever capped. Anyone know?
Played at U-21 and B-International level and was unlucky not to get a full cap. He played for Jack Charlton at Newcastle and had at least one season in the old English First Division. At the time he was probably in direct competition with Seamus McDonagh, Gerry Peyton and Packie. I always thought he looked a little shorter than his brother Alan so this might have counted against him.
He's played in a few U-21 games, don't think he's played for the senior team though. There were rumours for a while that the FA were going to approach him to play for England
Eidur Gudjohnsen played in the same Iceland team as his dad, he came on as a sub for his dad in his debut, AFAIK they're the only father/son team to play in the same international side.
Pepe Reina (Liverpool) and his father Miguel both played for Spain.
Peter Enckelman (Cardiff City) and his father Goran both played for Finland.
Nikolay Mihaylov, who is one of the two keepers in the squad to play us next month, and his father Borislav (who captained the team when they finished 4th in the 1994 WCFs) both played for Bulgaria.
RIP
Will the be a min silence at games this weekend?
RIP Alan. I stood behind the goal in Dalymount as a nipper on many occasions and watched him single-handedly defy the likes of Hungary, Czechslovakia and many others. He was a great keeper. He played in the 1964 cup final for Preston. They also named a stand after him at Deepdale.
RIP Alan
RIP Alan Kelly Sr.
I never realized Gary was his son as well. He was an unused subsitute either 8 or 12 times (I can't recall) Ireland were undefeated every time he was an unused subsitute and he should have been given a cap, even in a token match mid 90's.
Hard to believe Kielys only 2 years older than A. Kelly Jr. he could still be playing if it wasn't for that injury.
