Bazunu is an incredibly talented goalkeeper with massive potential - he is only 21 and goalkeepers don't come into their prime until their late 20s. In relation to Ireland - and I made this point before - apart from Shay Given - Bazunu, Kelleher or Travers (and possibly even O'Leary) would have walked into any Irish team over the past 100 years. We are spoilt for choice - we do not have a goalkeeping problem - all the issues with the Irish team are outside the penalty area.
Interesting call. I’d agree with your Given selection. For runner-up, I believe Randolph flies below the radar. He may have been iffy with the ball at his feet, but the period covering his 40-plus caps was never a worry. I cannot remember him ever letting Ireland down. We persisted with Shay Given way too long. He was a great keeper for Ireland for over a decade but we should have moved on when it was time.
I actually don't really recall being weak at goalkeeper in my lifetime and at times I think we were really strong. Mick Kearns was GK when I first started watching and despite being at Walsall did just fine. McDonagh was superb. Can't remember Paddy Roche much.
The weakest ones were late career Bonner and post-comeback Given. The less heralded guys like Peyton and Forde did just fine. Forde actually exceeded my expectations.
Guys like Keith Branagan can consider themselves very unlucky.
