Fans are questioning it's merits - low attendances (in many instances), practical 2nd string teams being fielded, and certain managers alluding to the fact that it is some sort of distraction to their real business.

Not a chance.
The Union Flag will be displayed by Linfield FC and it's supporters without apology to anyone - check out our club colours.;)
If other clubs wish to display national flags, that's fine and dandy - certainly won't be seeing me complain about it.
The ROI national flag does not "offend" me one iota.
I'm surprised at a Blueman using the Sunday World as a 'source' but it would do well to read what the Sunday Life had to say on the matter too which paints a different picture.

As for being sectarian, I would suggest you look the word up as 'sectarianism' does not only pertain to religious differences.
BTW, the time of entry on the CCTV at the other bar puts it at 2.30pm. I don't believe they were all, if any, at the Oval but if any were they didn't need to be Doctor Who.
Now it's bad enough for your own team that rag newspapers print crap and attempt to link Linfield to the trouble by saying they wore Linfield gear, but for you to do the same to another team is just sad.
And funny at the time of the incident all sides were agreed that Derry City's fans were not involved.
Doesn't look like even a polo shirt to me, let alone "an old style Celtic" one.

Three more arrests on Thursday evening relating to the attack - a total of five now.
I had seen the photos. It certainly reminds me of a Celtic polo shirt from a few years back. I must ask one of his family what he was wearing.
Has this been reported anywhere?
EDIT: Found this

Err - it isn't even a shirt Mr P. It's a pullover, with a T Shirt underneath it!
The old mince pies letting you down these days?
Let me guess what the family member will say.
"It was a Celtic pullover", perhaps?
Looks very similar to a wee number that used to be in stock at Next.
