Premier league debut
Baptism of fire here for Shane Duffy, Distin off injured and Duffy on against Spurs at White Hart Lane for his Premier League debut.
Same team Seamus Coleman made his debut against, albeit the result's not the same. Sounds like he was involved a lot from the minute-by-minute on BBC. He's gotten 4 blocks in the 5 minutes I've been watching. Doesn't seem to have been anything he could have done about the goal.
Done well, despite being on the losing side. Got plenty to do, got lots of blocks in vital areas. Looks assured. Didn't realise he was so tall.
Yep, did OK...blocked a few shots and cut out a few crosses. Did look a bit shaky at times but I suppose thats to be expected. Spurs did get their second a few minutes after he came on but he had nothing to do with that. Could get a chance on Saturday away to Villa.
That was Adebayor, think he's around 5ft 6 or something....
It was only half an hour but he looked comfortable enough.
I was thinking about this earlier in relation to Stevens, but coming on for an injured player is the ideal way for a defender to get his chance at the top level. No time to be nervous, just go on and do your job. It'll of given Moyes a little more confidence in him.
Midfielders/Forwards have it easier when getting a debut, they can be thrown on up front or out wide and not really affect the team defensively.
Joe, Adebayor is 6' 3'. Not been pedantic nor have I seen the game, but if it was Adebayor you are talking about, Duffy must be very, very tall!
He's not that big...Duffy is 6'4" and 74 kgs apparently. I'm 6'4" though I have a few lbs on him (though I haven't weighed myself in at least a year) and I think John O'Shea is about the same height. If he were up against Stoke he'd look average height.
I thought you were a bit smaller, Worm.
What you say is true. I was just being light-hearted really. Duffy was the beneficiary of quite an impressive growth spurt at a young age, so he always looked especially tall in youth teams when surrounded by his scrawny little team-mates of the same age. My brother likes to regale me with an anecdote of the time he attended the Milk Cup in Coleraine about three or four years ago to watch him play for a Derry representative team. With Derry trailing 3-0, the manager opted for plan B; send centre-back Duffy with his considerable height advantage up front to latch onto set pieces and long balls. Two minutes later, Duffy was chasing after a hat-trick.
The guy he replaced, Jagielka is out for 6 weeks so a chance for him I think.
