I couldn't tell you the last time I saw a video, so I haven't a clue.

CTID, the Good Times bass line is such a classic that not only was it sampled extensively, but it was said to 'influence' a lot of other bass lines, like 'Heart of Glass' and 'Another one bites the dust'

" Heart of Glass " was actually recorded in 1978 for the album Parallel Lines contemporaneously with " Good Times " being recorded by Chic. However your Queen assertion has some merit :D

CTID - as I was saying on totty watch, remember Pat Kenny's music programme on RTE radio on week night evenings?
He used to feature a lotta stuff rather than just new punk bands.
I remember him playing "Barracuda" by Heart when they were more of a folk-rock band. Bought lots of stuff from listening to his programme. Barracuda was easily thye best song from that album who's name escapes me.I taped about 3 songs off it and flogged the disc after that.
Another one he introduced was "Try Jah love" by reggae band Third World. Bought that album too and some great tracks on it. Kinda disco/reggae in places but great vocals, harmonies, musicianship and production. Still have that album and "Try Jah love" is one of my al time favourites songs. Went down well at discos too.
Another band he used to play was Chilli Willie and the Red Hot Peppers - nothing to do with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers as I'm sure you know.:)

That's the one CDIT.:) When they started to make stuff like "Alone" I couldn't believe it - after "Barracuda" they sounded like a different band.

I liked them back in the 1970's when my buddy Fergus Cooke introduced me to their song : " Crazy on You" and it's guitar riff intro :)
I think they lost the plot when the brunette's waistline started to bulge( and I don't think she had any kids either). I think she's Nancy and did a duet with a guy called Mike Reno from some movie in the 1980's called " Almost Paradise" which was a huge US Billboard* Top 40 hit.

* It ain't a hit till it's on Billboard ...

Speaking of Third World I remember them covering a Philadelphia Soul song
called " Now That We've Found Love" and had a hit with it. The original by the O'Jays as far as I can recall, died a death.

Can't say I know the third world version, but the O'jays one is good.
Wasn't it covered/sampled more recently? Heavy D I think.

'Love Train' and 'used to be my girl' are more O'jays, aren't they? I get confused between them and the likes of the Spinners. It's kind of motown/disco music.

(my real reason for posting is to stop CTID getting a five-in-a-row. That's like a gold run)

That was their biggie all right - features now and again on Vh1 Classic but "Try Jah love" is mighty - 7mins plus long.

I actually DJ'd from 1975 to 1981:eek: but the Beeslow accent is really not the best for that kinda thing.:D

Noby, one of my alltime soul (or any) favourites is the O'Jays "LOve train" - absolutely love that song.:)

I bought two great singles a few months ago - "Yeke Yeke" by More Kante and "Rising Sun" by Medisine Head - had the latter once but someone nicked it and the More Kante single is the original version, not the the disco sh!t version realised in the 90s.:)

Ah sure, I have the record amigo - really unusual sound to that song even today. I think they're remembered for their first hit, "One and one is one" I think it was called, wasn't mad about that one.

I picked up Ziggy Stardust (30th anniversary edition) on the cheap last week, so I'm going through a real Bowie phase at the moment (ie until the end of the week anyway).
My Bowie collection is pretty limited, but Low seems to be highly recommended. Should this be added to my must-have list?
At the moment I'm skipping from Ziggy Stardust to Let's Dance; I don't have any of the Berlin/Eno albums. Nothing post-'83 grabs my attention either, although Heathen got good reviews.

Yeah, Dirty Boulevard - that's the one. I'll add a Bowie compilation CD I've got now that you mentioned him.
What I've boxed thus far for ya - Bob Seger, John Fogerty/Creedence, Led Zep, Steve Earle live, Rory Gallagher DVD (electric and accoustic stuff - "pure mighty":D ), a Dylan DVD (MTV unplugged), Rankin Family "North Winds" (some average stuff, some great stuff - give this one time), Nightwish live DVD (if you don't like the music, turn off the sound and just ogle Tarja Turunen:D ), Richard Thompson, Talk Talk, Gerry Rafferty.
Anything there you don't like or anything you want me to add?
I'm not PMing this 'cos some other dudes might want to add suggestions.
Meant to post this Friday but don't think the Post Office is open Good Friday????? - so Saturday.
I've also got good rock compilations CDs too - eg includes George Thoroghgood and the Destroyers "Bad to the bone" - loads of that if you want it.

I have a 'Best of' Bowie cd, so I'm ok. I'm just working my way through a couple of his albums.

As for the ones you've listed, I've given none of them a 'fair' listen, so I don't want to rule anything out. Looking forward to Creedence/Steve Earle/Gallagher.

On a similair-ish vein, would you have any CSN&Y?

Low is a classic as is Heroes. Those two Bowie albums influenced a lot of artists who followed in the late 1970,s and early Eighties. V2 Schneider is a tribute to Frankfurt. The Scheider mentioned is Florian Schneider from German band Kraftwerk. Kraftwerk then repiled in kind with a track called Bowi which was on a single B side I believe.

So a strange package arrived on my doorstep...

This week I've been mainly listening to Yes - The Yes Album. The only thing I knew about Yes before this week was Rick Wakeman, and he's not even on this album. But it's really after growing on me.
I also got Elbow's first album this week. Never had any of their stuff, but I see they describe themselves as prog without the solos.
Tonight I think I'll 'tackle' the Genesis albums. Then I'll grow a beard and wear sandals.

This mini prog-a-thon has been broken up by blasts of Led Zeppelin.
Hamish has a lot to answer for.

That Yes album was the original band - Wakeman joined just after that one.

Selling England by the pound is my favourite Genesis album - lyrics are terrific and way ahead of their time - battle of Epping Forest as a footie hooligan type song is very funny and Dancing with the Moonlit knight could be a story about society today. Firth of fifth has a beautiful piano intro too.
In the Nursery Crime album the song Musical Box is a kinda depraved version of a ....eh...nursery rhyme. Eerie and ghostly feel to it plus great keyboard, guitar and vocal work on it. Recording quality is a but rough.

Don't forgetJohn Fogerty/Creedence - lo-fi but I can see where the Strokes and Kings of Leon have got their influences a bit.

I listened to a bit of Fogarty the other day alright. I'll have to give it a good listen the weekend. Yesterday was my daughter's second birthday, so I didn't think Genesis would make good kids' party music.
When I was growing up Peter Gabriel was doing nifty videos on MTV, Phil Collins was doing his solo thing (which wasn't my cup of tea), then Genesis reformed and released some awful MOR dirge. Oh and Mike and the Mechanics too (also not my cuppa). Seems a long way away from where they started.

Yeah, Genesis in Gabriel's time were a different band. To be fair to Collins, he's a suoerb drummer - shame about his solo stuff. They did release the odd good ditty - Land of Confusion (great video from Spitting Image), Turn it on again (TBF Collins does a great live singing version on one of their live albums of this song and ends up drumming his ass off with the other drummer at the end of the song), Mama is also a good song - creepy video but most of the rest of their stuff is pure AOR pop. Oh, there's one other good video - their video p!ss take on evangelical TV is great gas (Jesus he loves me).

Kep an eye on Fogerty - it's rough stuff, recording wise, but the man is a genius. Hugely influential on Bruce Springsteen, Seger, Dave Edmunds etc.

You've kids???:eek: Jaysus, I thought you were only a young lad??:D

I have that CD CTID and I also have a Fogerty DVD on order from Amazon (pre-order they call it) for ages - it's currently not available. I got the same video from Badlands years ago but all it had was "snow" on it.
His voice, for his age, is still strong.

BTW I'm enjoying Nerina Pallot's new single "Every body's going to war". Thought from the video she was a young wan but she's 31 and been around for a while. It's nothing special, just a nice, catchy power pop song with a daft video - "metaphorical food fight in a supermarket". She sound like a rocked up Suzanne Vega (she has supported Suzanne in fact) and looks like a black haired Joni Mitchell. She's not even American but sounds it - she's a Londoner with Indian and various other ethnic backgrounds.
This seems to be her last chance to be a star - apparently she was a child musical prodigy and the photographs I've seen show her play all kinds of instruments.
If I can get the right pictures, she will have the honour of becoming a member of Totty Watch.:D
