Don't follow Bohs closely enough to see what has happened recently, but he always struck me as doing a decent job of keeping Bohs quite competitive against teams with bigger budgets...though this thread is making me think his budgets were actually bigger than i believed.
Thought he was fairly canny in how he set his teams up in big games too. He'll still be in demand as a manager I expect.
He will and Bohs thought so too with a very long term deal, especially by LoI norms, for Long/coaching team. If any managerial vacancies happen his name will be in the mix. Would he move to Galway, could be a fit for Harps and where they are at in terms of the broader project there if Ollie goes, have Waterford made moves on a permanent manager, Drogheda when Doherty takes the Bohs job - there are some good clubs to go to if he wants to jump back in.
There is a whole load of guess work on club budgets and over the years there's wildly over and underestimated budgets - probably why the running jests on 4th biggest budget has stuck for years. Many clubs will have a year on year increase in budgets as key players demand more not to move and Bohs will have done the same, so how much things are incremental increases rather than comparing what a manager worked with one year and and then subsequent years later can be misleading imo, certainly in terms of suggesting mismanagement by a head coach.
If there has been a significant jump from 2021 to 2022, on par with Dundalk and St Pat, as suggested by some Bohs fans, there are a few more strategic club policies that i'd be questioning if it were my club eg how similar budgets at other clubs are full-time/day time training, rather than a more semi-pro 1st team setup. Yes there is investment being made in other parts of the club so hence it being relative to other clubs use of 1st team budget. It does effect fitness and more importantly recovery, prep etc. so should be an early change at a club if finances allow. If this policy is a baby steps approach by club rather than team management, fans should be wondering why as much as possible wasnt eeked out of money being spent, before a bunch of new signings are signed off on as sticking plasters. There has been an ambiguity or confusion even among Bohs fans on whether their setup is ft or not or set to go ft. I get why some Bohs fans think a manger change was needed but it is at partially done move to FT training and a new manager could well want to start from scratch.
To have a manager push for an increase to budgets and a club to agree and then sack the manager a month after the transfer window closes is not in line with Bohs general rhetoric on sustainability so the CEO should be getting a roasting over things also. The inability to move on coaches brought in by a former manager is a significant issue unless an internal appointment is made. Cork fell foul of such stuff in recent history and were badly stretched and under the much lauded members owned model also. It just seems messy and that there could be a bit more to things than just matchday performances. To wait until after a Derby against champions elect and pull the trigger after a loss, or see if the squad are capable of putting in a shift and win against, would have been eh less messy somehow. Club admin took the eye off the ball either way! Maybe KL himself had had enough and at least would give the club a pass on how they've done things.
At the end of the day Bohs have won 13 of their last 42 league games. Any other manager of a comparable sized club in that type of form would've been sacked sooner.
Which full-time teams are Bohs supposed to have bigger playing budgets than? If (and I stress if) that's the case there's either full time clubs cutting a very impressive cloth or Bohs fans should be questioning more than just Keith Long surely? Like if (there's that word again) they're 4th biggest outlay are they behind Rovers, Derry and Dundalk? And if that's the case are Bohs actually spending more on a part-time team than Pats and Sligo (they're both full-time, right)? How?
To add some info regarding full/part time at Bohs, I read in an article recently that only 1 Bohs player has a day job this year - Feely is a teacher.
The rest are all full time footballers, unless they have some students?
They still train in the evenings at the moment but are planning to move to day time training next year.
The reason they train in the evenings is because Keith Long and Trevor Crolly have jobs (at least that's what i heard maybe a Bohs fan could confirm).
Beyond daft and maybe not surprising on reflection that it had to end really if they were going to start to train in the mornings next season.
Keith Long has been full time for two or three years. The reason why the club has still been part time has been because most of the backroom staff was still part time and up until last season the likes of Buckley and Cornwall had other jobs too.
Bohs are not part-time. It doesn't take rocket science to figure out Rovers, Derry and Pats will have higher budgets than Bohs, Dundalk will still have players on decent contracts so they are likely to have a higher budget than Bohs. Shels definitely have the lowest full-time budget around 12-13k per week.
Thats news to me about Andy Reid who is he involved with now in the premiership as I have heard very little from him lately!
That makes even less sense! There has been plenty of blurring the lines on this, no broad agreement - maybe we need a definition of what is a FT club which is as LoI as it gets:D We have a few lads on amateur forms that have warmed the bench once or twice so Dundalk are not FT at all but are doing brilliantly to gallantly manage to stay in the mix with better resourced clubs.....?!
Ricer’s name popping up a bit. Mind you it was as well for Rovers when Bradley was looking like going to Lincoln.
From what he said in recent interviews, I don't think he's ready to give up his ireland gig for the uncertainty of a LOI gig just yet.
The Bohs job is probably as tough as there is in the country now,the expectation from the supporters is there but the squad is miles off Rovers and probably Derry and Pats aswell ,huge job for any manager to get them closer to those teams….
I wouldn't be surprised if they let Croly and Pender see out the remainder of the season. Who knows, things might pick up with Long gone. And if not, they still have the off season to find a replacement.
Told by (usually close to the mark) person that's pretty close to Bohs currently, though not a member or fan, that there was some inflighting over the decision to axe Long before this weekend and that the reason for timing is that prior to this week 2 possible replacements were sounded (so not at all being actually approached:confused:)and 1 required a firm move on KL before any talks. Wouldnt say who or even if they were from LoI circles but I got the impression that they werent and got a flinch when Irish League mentioned. Make of that what you will. Possibilities?
Paul Doolin will be raging when he doesn't get this job.....
I also wonder would Andy Myler be on their shortlist. I know UCD fans on here don't seem to rate him, but he has high enough stock it seems outside of UCD. Maybe the connection with Rovers will be too much for Bohs tho.

One thing I do not get from Bohs is why sign so many players mid-season only to sack the manager who presumably brought them in a month later. If you are going to bring players in under Long, it is unfair to expect much from a team in near enough preseason against settled teams in the middle of theirs. Either you were building for next season or that was a silly plan- it's very hard to bring in a nearly new 11 in the middle of the year and expect them to gel right away and get results. Now a new manager would probably want to bring in his own players, and the past window was for nothing.
Long should have been let go before the window, to allow a new manager time to bring in his own players and build for the next year. Just bad footballing decisions from the club from the outside for me.. They seemed unwilling to make the hard call.
Interesting thought. Doolin aside, who else could they tempt? There probably aren't too many who would consider a move.
Gary Hamilton, who's at Glenavon, or maybe Oran Kearney from Coleraine.
Healy won't leave Linfield, and Baxter is basically Crues manager for life at this point. McDermott at Glens has had loads of jobs, but is finally back home, so not sure he'd move.
I'd discount the rest.
Given a choice, Paddy McLaughlin could be a great signing, but not sure he'd leave Cliftonville at present.
Graham Coughlan linked today. Seems to have done ok in England.
That was my own initial thinking, if they were looking north that it would have to be a bit of a coup and he would fit the bill. It would take some serious effort, wouldnt be cheap and how do you deal with the coaches in place. Harps people might have some idea if he is the type that could be enticed away from the current job mid season..
The Derry fellas would have a better idea than anybody I’d say,he said in May he was close to joining Derry last year in a coaching role but also said he wants to become a full time manager aswell, would be an interesting appointment as he seems to be doing a fine job at Cliftonville….

Job advertised on Twitter! It has not gone down well….
Id love to understand the thinking behind tweeting out for expressions of interest. Surely any manager in the Irish football sphere already knows the job is available and any managers outside of that are unlikely to see the tweet. Not to mention that it also gives off the impression the board haven’t got an idea who they want to be manager. Just looks completely amateur hour
I agree they should have given him until the end of the season after such a large changeover of players.
Regarding the timing, I'm also wondering if they sacked him before the Rovers match knowing that it would be near impossible to sack him afterward if they had beaten Rovers. It's unlikely at the moment, but he had a decent record in derbies, given the difference in resources. Didn't he go 8/9 derbies at one point without losing one? I don't remember he exact number but he had a great run in them for a while.
Anyway, that was an old Abramovich trick when he wanted rid of a manager. He often gave them the boot before a big game, because if they went and bloody won the big game he wouldn't have as strong a case.
Its all peculiar even for Bohs! Im not saying any of this slagging off the club, its that it has been a tightly run ship over recent years even if some things not particularly of footballing interest to many, but then the clatter of signings, sacking a manager weeks later, and now a job advertisement on twitter etc? Has the real brain guiding the club gone off on long term leave or something!?
*Maybe if someone was approached prior to KL sacking, or maybe not through a club, that this is the kind of smoke screen than can go up, and claim there was no plan in place prior to this advertisement and avoid a few complication...
Yeah, offered the number two with us, turned it down, apparently.
He left Stute in the middle of the season to go to Cliftonville, albeit that's an easier move to decide on than moving to Bohs.
There's a bit of a presumption that he'll manage Derry at some stage. Well liked as a player, and he did a brilliant job with Stute, getting promoted during the 17-18 season. Stute had no money, were being outbid on wages by Inishowen League teams, and they ended up playing virtually the entire season away from Riverside after it was flooded in August.
Laid the foundation for them staying up comfortably in the next season too (he left in February).
I wonder would Pat Fenlon move out of his safety net and return to Bohs I wonder? Or is his days as mgr over for good?
Im pretty sure they have candidates in mind and there has been planning albeit it could have been rushed and not thought through and there are elements of winging it. But yes the tweet could be entirely benign but once again imo that would add to the odd way this has or is panning out.
Sligo had a similar tweet a few months ago when Buckley got sacked. Strange that didn't get the same type of reaction this is.
