The home of the Candystripes is set for a multi-million redevelopment following the announcement that funding has been secured.
Airtricity Premier Division side Derry City are set to reap the benefits of an allocation of public funding which will go towards the redevelopment of the Brandywell.
The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL) in Northern Ireland has confirmed that a sum of £2 million (€2.3m) will be allocated towards the development of a 'Foyle Valley/Brandywell Masterplan' which seeks to improve sporting facilities in the Foyle Valley area, including Brandywell Showgrounds, adjacent to the Brandywell Stadium.
In addition, funding from Derry City Council, to the amount of £2.8 million (€3.3m) will be invested directly into the development of Brandywell Stadium.
Welcoming the news, Sinn Fein MLA for Foyle Raymond McCartney and said that it would have a "massive impact" on the area.
"I welcome this announcement which means that the redevelopment of the entire Foyle Valley/Brandywell Masterplan has now been unlocked, in conjunction with Council funding of £2.8million," he said in a statement.
"It will have a massive impact in terms of promoting social inclusion, tackling health and social inequalities, building sporting excellence and maximising participation."
The Brandywell Stadium is a municipal sports ground owned by Derry City Council, and Derry City represents one of its main tenants.
