Drogs stand firm on back-pay offer to players

Drogheda United have set a deadline of 5pm tomorrow for players to accept a lump-sum settlement on owed back-wages. Players voted last week to reject a pay-off of €90,000 as settlement for roughly €300,000 of back-pay.

The club maintains that it is not in a position to increase that offer, as the funds were raised mainly by supporters for the emergency fund aimed at saving the club. Drogheda United press officer Terry Collins said: “We probably have raised the best part of €200,000 - it's going to cost us that and more to get out of examinership.

“The offer we made to players last week is a very generous offer considering the amount of money we have and what we're asking is that they accept it and help us get out of examinership.”

He [Stephen McGuinness] also called on the club's directors to make a financial gesture to get the negotiations beyond the impasse.

"They're the people who got the club into the situation that it's in now, and yet, despite the assurances they gave that they would meet their obligations for the year, most of them seem to have walked away and the FAI, just as they did with Arkaga in Cork, have done nothing to stop them. Well, they should take responsibility for the current situation and come up with the money required."

The issue that remains is the unwillingness of the directors to pay for the pledges and promises they made.

None of directors are homeless and destitute.

Neither are the players to be fair.

But I would agree that the fans shouldn't have been left to clean up this mess.

and im sure all the players have agreed to take out personal loans of €2,000, €3,000 and €4,000 to help the clu get out of their difficulties just like the fans are expected to :mad:

Eh :confused:

I am just sickened by how the players in the league want want want and have creamed it from the clubs for so long. Now once the clubs hit difficulties they demand their money and will then skip along to next club. Part of the monies that the players will receive might possibly be coming from the supporters PERSONAL loans that they took out. Now that is pure madness. It is the one thing that you have to hand to the GAA boys. Loyalty is a word that can not apply at all to the players of the league whatsoever.

sorry skip dont agree these are employees who were not treated as employees should so are not happy they did not make this situation the club did and while i agree you cant blood out of a stone loyalty is a two way street.also the difference between them and the gaa lads is they when full time so this is there source of revenue

Very true and point well made. I suppose its just the whole fact that the club is gonna go to the wall and this could be final nail in its coffin that is hard to swallow.
