    iPad - your thoughts

Apple introduced the iPad yesterday. Is it hype or will it change the market? Can't help but think it's just an overblown iPhone myself with add-ons.

Explore every iPad. Featuring iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad mini, and iPad. For work, creativity, or play.

I'm disappointed. No webcam for videochat, no multitasking, €100 plus extra for a 3G radio chip.........

Probably nice enough ereader, webbrowser, tv/movie watcher but far from a game changer.

    A great big mweh.

I don't think I'll ever use something backlit for ebooks. It's just too hard on the eyes. E-ink all the way!

It's interesting to compare it with the idea behind Google's upcoming Chrome OS. They argue that many people use computers for internet access, so if you strip a computer down to basically just a dumb terminal, you can provide them with most of the functionality they want via web apps.

Compare that with the iPad, a device which is optimised for display and size at the expense of convenience of input.

it's an oversized iPod touch/iPhone without a camera

lack of multitasking means it's already underpowered compared to the Nexus One.

Nice list of what's missing here: http://mashable.com/2010/01/27/ipad-whats-missing/

I don't see it being a complete failure, there's enough Mac zealots out there that would buy a silver ball scratcher if Steve Jobs introduced it and it had an Apple symbol on the back, but it's in no way going to be a success on the level of the iPhone or the iPod.

Does it have wings? Will it keep me comfortable, dry and fresh even when I'm most active? I need answers!

Totally underwhelmed. I'm hoping for a lot more from the second generation, as this one is just missing too much. At least I've saved myself a few hundred quid

Totally convinced I'm not going to buy it. They say it's going to be amazing to play games and watch TV and films on. Only thing is, where do you get the films if there's no USB or DVD drive? iTunes store. No thank you.

                    My immediate thoughts are:

                    GIMMICK ALERT

                    and

When are they going to release the iScratch, Tets?
That question was less stupid, though you asked it in a profoundly stupid way.

Help me, Arthur Murphy, you're my only hope!

My immediate thought is what does it do better than a standard tablet notebook? Probably won't even be cheaper by the time you add the paddy tax on.

I'm sure it'll be a success because of all the apple lemmings...
If you attack me with stupidity, I'll be forced to defend myself with sarcasm.

Its not for me. Apparently its for old fogies who don't understand computers. No harm in that, I suppose.
But my question is: how are you supposed to hold it and type at the same time? With the iPhone I can hold it in my hand(s) and type with my thumbs, but this is too wide to do that. If you hold it with one hand and type with the other I reckon your holding hand will get tired pretty quickly.

Remarkably, I think I agree with this guy! :O

Rip and encode into h.264 on your real 'puter using a freeware programme like Handbrake then sync using itunes.

                          No biggie.

Agree though that no USB or card reader is lame.

I think its the start of something great but its not good enough really at the moment. I feel if you where to go out and buy this now it would be a total waste of money as a year or two down the line they are going to have ones that can do everything or at least nearly everything a laptop can. It is the way forward but for now its not good enough.

The only people that will buy this are people big into technology and need to have the latest gimmick and/or people who may not have a laptop and only need something like this for web browsing, photos etc... and would find it much more suited to them for the basics.

I actually think it might be more suited to places like restaurants than anything else, as a menu or something, and the hostess has one that controls the rest.
