Im going to Sorrento with herself for a week soon, we plan to see Naples but only during the daytime, hearing some dodgy things about it after dark.

Headed there myself in Sept, would be interested in any advice/tips

I was in Sorrento last summer. It's definitely a couples destination. Plenty to see and do - recommend a trip along the Amalfi coast, the food's a bit of hit and miss, and make sure to bring your wallet.

I did a day trip to Naples and couldn't get out of the place quick enough.

My dad's down around that neck of the woods at the moment (or 'shin of the leg' I suppose would be more appropriate ). All I've heard so far is that Naples is very picturesque and that there's some excellent museum there. I'll inform further if I hear more. Anyway you've Pompeii, Sorrento, Capri, Amalfi Coast in the hinterland so I'd say there's plenty to marvel at Paul.

Nah it was nothing to do with the rubbish. I had heard about the rubbish beforehand but didn't notice anything unusual in that regard when I was there. I just found the city to be rundown, thought there was a lot of dodgy looking characters hanging about (we took the train into they city - and decided to take the ferry home ), and I wouldn't describe the city as picturesque by any means. I didn't go into any museums so can't comment on that. The only reason I would go back to Naples is for the pizza I bought there - easily the best pizza I've ever eaten. But as you write the hinterland around Naples is more than worth a visit. We were actually thinking of going back to Sorrento again this year as we liked it so much last year.

I don't think the locals consider the old town to be "historic" considering the amount of graffiti they've plastered across it. But it's a big city and I only spent a day there - and that was enough for me.

Ive only been to italy twice, but every city i was in(towns too) had graffiti planted all over the shop(literally ), rome was really bad. But in a strange with it does add "character"

I was there for a few months around 5-6 years ago, it's fine! The Piazza Garibaldi (right outside the main railway station) is a bit grotty and there are lots of people selling fake bags there but apart form that its fine. People were firendly and if you intereacted with them (talking Italian is a good idea if you can manage it) then you will find it to be one of the friendliest places in Italy. There are some very nice parts to it, by the royal palace is good and also there is a suburb up on the hill (near St. Elmo) and Vanvitelli which is really nice. You can get the metro there, it is perfectly safe. You should be careful when talking to a northern Italian about the south as a lot of them have a latent bias about the south (saying its dangerous, smelly, not nice people, etc) when many of them have never been there themselves. Napoli was very much marginalised during and since the risorgimento (unification of Italy in the 1800s) - Maradona actually made a point of this in 1990 during the world cup, saying how the plight of Neapolitans in years gone by was similar to the [then] plight of Argentines.
