I set up a site on geocites but the pop up adds are a bit of a pain, but I've seen worse geocites site , don't know if you would get a free web hosting site without adds etc. though.

I just cancelled an account with these guys yesterday - no particular reason, I just never used it - might be worth a look. We also have a local operator in FreeHost.ie, although he requires that you register a domain with him. Damien seems a pretty straight guy though.

I've heard Freewebs is quite good, and www.nexuswebs.net is very good I've heard (will try them maybe and then upgrade to paid when I like them)

You also have port5.com, lycos.co.uk, ... Don't go with guys like crosswinds.net who promise crazy things (unlimited MB or so...). Only the sun provides for free.

I am a bit suspicious when the words "internet" and "free" come in the same sentence. I mean, let's face it, how is someone going to run a free webhost without ads ? No money comes in from ads, no money comes in from the people using the service. Meanwhile maintainance of the servers costs money, and staff ain't gonna do it for free as well.

Some companies have paid and free hosting (eg nexuswebs.net + hostnexus.net, port5.com + portland.co.uk, ...) but even there I'm a bit suspicious: they pay for maintainance of 100% of their infrastructure, while only the paying customers (let's say 60%) pay them. So you still spend more than you get, unless the paying customers pay enough to maintain the whole infrastructure and make it a break-even. But even then: why would a hosting company WANT to give away hosting for free when neither advertisers nor customers pay them for it ??

And if it exists, good free hosting, know that you got all sorts of nasty terms and conditions: your site is history if you don't sign in for more than a month (the famous "expiries" hotmail is well known for: +30 days without activity and it's gone), you will have to at least allow a small banner from the hosting company itself, ...

Advise: go with paid hosting. Enough providers who are good and low-priced. Free is always dodgy.

Absolutely. In fact, go with BEECHER.NET hosting. You know it mocks sense.

How much do you ask and for what features ?

And seriously, I don't care paying if I get a good support. Same with domains. I am into the domainworld myself, and I don't register at the very cheapest places. I prefer spending a few pounds more than the headaches of bad service.
