    Dublin Airport Radar problems

    Irish Times

Air passengers are continuing to experience delays in Dublin Airport today follow a serious malfunction of the radar system yesterday.

The system was shut down for a time yesterday after breaking down twice and today the system is only operating at 70 per cent capacity. IAA spokeswoman Lilian Cassin said this morning the system was “safe and stable” and that it was hoped to have it operating at 100 per cent capacity as soon as possible.

The four-year-old radar system has malfunctioned five times in as many weeks, the IAA admitted yesterday. Engineers from the authority and French electronics manufacturer Thales SA have identified the source of the malfunction and a repeat of the problems isn't expected.
Is it a kneejerk reaction to ask why no contingency? Do other large airports have backup systems?
