Quick question.

I need to access archive copies of Dublin and Cork papers, going back over a hundred years in some cases, for some research I'm doing.

How can I go about getting my hands on them ? Do any libraries carry microfiche copies of old Irish newspapers ? Any other options ?

Dublin City library on Pearse Street has the nationals on microfiche and the National Library has them too.

By registering in my local public library I have online access to the Irish Times, Irish Independent, Guardian and Washington Post.

An absolutely brilliant and invaluable service IMO. I presume Her Majesty's Government will afford you the same opportunities in your local library Steve?

Steve, do you know the business library on London Wall? 5 mins from Moorgate Tube station. They are very helpful and I know they carry newspaper archives although cannot be sure that they will have any Irish ones.

I think you'd have to come to UCC or Cork City library for the cork papers.
AFAIK, the city library has the Cork Examiner until it became the Irish Examiner.
I'd imagine all universities would have the national papers.

No chance ! Anyways - its Councils that fund libraries, not the government....

Though it's the archives I need - not access to the papers online.

Public library access provides all issues of the above publications ever.

They do get a 'dividend' from the state, but it shrinks constantly.

You've already been advised about Pearse Street and the National Library in Kildare Street.
The former is open all day Saturday up to about 5 p.m . The National Library is only open 10-1 on Saturdays. I mention this in case you fancy popping over some weekend for research purposes. The National Library opens till 10 p.m. a couple of nights during the week if you are over for a few days.

P.S. The National Library has newspapers from all over the country even Derry and Cork
