Eamon de Valera Street, New Delhi, India

    Taken from BreakingNews.ie

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern today said he was delighted the Indian government planned to name a street in the capital New Delhi in honour of Eamon de Valera.

De Valera was regarded by many Indian leaders as friend of the state as it pushed for independence from Britain from the 1920s onwards.

And he was also remembered for a donation of 20 million rupees in 1943 to aid famine relief in Calcutta.

Nice touch - good of the Indian government to remember and comemmorate it out of the blue at this time.

Though where did Dev get 20m ruppees back then - is that where a chunk of the Irish Press shares money went....?

Wonder how much 20m ruppees would be in pounds/Euro today ?

Really? So the exchange rate between the rupee and the Euro has been frozen for all those decades? And there's been no inflation at all? Amazing.

Rather than say something nasty, let me explain it to you in nice, simple terms.
Dev paid 20m rupees a long, long time ago (in a place, far, far away - not magical though). By an economic miricle known as inflation, that sum of money wouldn't be worth the same amount today. Our friend dfcsteve was wondering about the actual value of Dev's donation, not some utterly irrelevant conversion of it into a currency that didn't exist at the time it was made.

Our "friend" Steve didn't ask how much the 20m rupees donated would be worth today. He specifically said, "Wonder how much 20m ruppees would be in pounds/Euro today ?"
                He got his answer.
I'll let you work out the answer to what you assume he was wondering.

I think it was to be taken as read that he was referring to the 20m Dev specifically donated. In which case, you could times that figure by at least 20.
