Concussion substitutes

FAI senior competitions will be trialling Concussion Substitutes this coming season, using the IFAB Protocol B:

Protocol B

• Each team is permitted to use a maximum of two concussion substitutes during a match.
• When a concussion substitute is used, the opposing team has the option of using an additional substitute for any reason.
  • The opposing team is informed of their additional substitution opportunity by the match officials.
  • The additional substitution may be used concurrently with the concussion substitution or at any time thereafter.

Does anyone know if this has implications for the number of subs a team may name before the match? Does 5 go to7? In ET matches where a fourth sub is allowed, does 7 go to 9?

7 is the number of substitutes allowed to be named on the bench even pre-covid. I’m not sure if this new rule will allow any extras on the bench or not.

While on the topic of substitutions, is there still going to be 5 subs per game this season or is it back to 3? Hard to keep track of it with 3 subs being allowed in the premier league, 5 in cup competitions and Championship to league two level and different rules depending on the leagues across europe

Basically - there are too many subs allowed. Their main function, as everybody knows, is to come on late in the game to waste time until the final whistle sounds.

That's a big use of them, but far too simplistic. Fresh legs and tactical subs are a big part of the game.

They can also be used to interfere with enemy shipping movements.

It is, and I think it it's only a start for the game in general. Sooner than later there will be pretty major changes to youth football (14s and under give or take) as evidence is mounting that repetitive sub-concussive impacts to the head eg heading a ball, has cumulative detrimental effect on a developing brain. So anything from stopping heading until a particular age, limiting/adapting coaching drills, lighter or enforcement of age related size of the footballs, use of gumshields, shortened games, smaller pitches, limits to number of games players can play etc, will happen along with head injury protocols.
The outcome of the lawsuit ex rugby players are taking against their various governing bodies will worry a number of other contact sports including football. Football could well become a front line on the issue as what seems a benign aspect of the game (as opposed to accidental head injuries) isnt so benign at all. Heading will never be removed from the game for obvious reasons, but players could end up having regular compulsory assessment - the conundrum is that the more serious longer term effects (certain types of dementia eg) cant be properly diagnosed until post-mortem. There is also an issue with under reporting/hiding concussive incidents as clubs dont want to end up with players sitting out for up to 6 weeks after a concussion. Its a big can of worms that clubs and associations need to be thinking about now if they dont want masses of lawsuits as are building in other sports both legit and not.
