League Cup quarter final

Galway away. Awkward one on a weekday.

Galway playing Bray at home before this midweek fixture, Sligo away on the Saturday after.

Waterford at home before the league cup game on the 18th/19th, with Limerick away on the Friday only 2/3 days later.

It's a tough fixture but I reckon it's winnable

It is, yeah. Although Galway beat us by more than anyone else in pre-season. And they played a full team against Derry.

I'd put some more of the first-teamers into the side for this one; they need the experience against Premier Division teams as much as - if not more than - the reserves. Good practice for next season.

Reasonably strong team, Purcell is the only one who hasn't played a few league games. We might struggle to score though. Galway are pretty much full strength I think. Extratime are doing updates here.

Arrived a little after kick-off. Galway Utd. had most of the possesion and the the chances in the first half. Freekicks conceded on the left-hand side of the penalty area and corners from both sides of the UCD goal. But only later in the half did Galway start to win their headers in the box and send them wide of the goal or into Brennans arms. Whose handling, following-on from Athlone, was once again quality.
UCD were left with Keith 'Billy Whizz' Ward or Timmy Purcell to find some space with runs. Ward and Finn did link up a few times in the middle of the park aswell.
Dave McMillan came on at the start of the second half for Dineen and although he is carrying a knee-injury. He put in alot of effort in the half. Chris Mulhall was put through in on the left-side and Gary Breen had no option but to take him down. The same referee as UCD-Waterford on Friday, gave him a straight red. Foster took off centre-back David Cooke and brought on another defender Mark O'Toole. What also changed was that UCD's midfield and forward players had more space to run onto loose balls and play the ball around alot more.
The first goal came of sustained pressure, Brian Shorthall went galloping down the right wing and sent in a low cross which O'Toole facing his own goal scrambled clear, the loose ball was fed to Ward who ran clear of the defence drew his man and passed to Mulhall who delayed before shooting past Ryan. UCD were happy to let the play be contested in the middle and break loose on either wing. Although D. McMillan was able to run past three defenders and gain ground on them but Ryan did superbly in blocking his shot.
Pete McMahon who did some defending in the first half was able to get forward in the second and went round the defenders a few times to put in a cross. On one occasion he was in the box, made room for himself and screwed a shot through the defenders, Ryan was claiming a wide and ball ball hit the far post before being cleared.
The next time he was in the box, Ward sent a cross in, more into space than any person, McMahon stretched low and his shot hit a defender and ricocheted into the net. There was one or two other scares for UCD as Jay O'Shea and O'Brien as a sub. tried to keep Utd. going. Timmy Purcell went off with an injury for James Timmons and Michael Kelly came on near the end.

What an amazing win! Decent team from us but by no means full strength (did we more or less sub on our entire bench from Friday?) Galway fans on their forum saying we started shakily, but came into the game more as Galway stood off us. Deserved red really swung the game in our favour.

Interesting that Fingal lost to Sligo too. Don't know what teams either had out, but would have almost expected Fingal to win that one given both sides' form this season. Maybe there is a decent gap between the Premier and the First, and maybe we're well capable of bridging it.

Still, Limerick away first up. Worry about the semis later.

OK, it's later now. When's the draw? This week I assume? And when's the semis? I'll take Rovers away for a bit of cash.

Well I believed it was possible!!!

Great result, credit to the manager who it looked like got the balance in the starting line-up right between 1st teamers and squad players.

Hopefully get a home draw with Sligo in semi's as you'd expect Rovers and Bohs to win respectively tonight.

I don't want to bring you bad news but you may not get the Monday 03 Aug. date.
UCD are due to play Longford Town away on the Saturday and that is usually enough of an argument to put the game forward to the Tuesday 04 Aug.
Also the Tues 04, Wed. 05 and Thurs 06 Aug. are 3rd. qual. 2nd leg dates for the two UEFA-sponsored competitions which may effect two teams in the semi-final draw.

Fantastic result for the lads, wish I was there to see it. Hopefully we'll get Sligo or Waterford in the semis. They'll both be difficult opponents but they're also beatable.
