That's what I thought. I'll have a look at the FIFA site for details.

What do you think of getting Anto Murphy back? I'm sorry to see him go.

not to much really he seems to be a nice chap but he's a bit hot and cold, and at times he's a bit of a loose canon. He makes a good squad player i suppose.

Git, are you a fan of the college?
I think the rule is that 5% of the transfer fee gets divided between each club he was at on the basis of how many birthdays he spent at the club between 12 and 21. So, for example, if a player was with UCD for 3 years, UCD would get 30% of 5% of each transfer.

Kevin Doyle was actually bought (as opposed to an U-23 Bosman) was he? I think Cork have a clause that they'd get extra if (when) he gets an international cap.

If Gary were to move to a Premiership team (like Charlton), and what with him being only 19 now and with three U-21 caps, including one as captain and one goal, I wonder are we getting ahead of ourselves talking about compensation for Gaz getting a senior cap?

That percentage of subsequent sales is actually very very small. Imagine Gary scoring the winning goal for Charlton in the FA Cup Final against Chelsea, who subsequently buy him for £17m - we'd still only get £17m * 5% * 20% = £170k. Though I suppose it's better than a kick in the teeth, which is what we'd have gotten under the old rules.

Anyway, let's return this thread to planet Earth...!

He was bought. There was a minimum fee clause in his contract.

We probably are but I don't think it's completely out of the question.

To put that in context though, that would be a record sum for a transfer fee from the EL, never mind money for a transfer with nothing to do with us.

you have to remember as well he with you only a year or so. So it's not like UCD moulded him for years or spent a whole lot on his wages, but i suppose the one thing they did do was give him a platform to play on, bit was that out of choice or have they got no one else to play. Either way I'm sure UCD will get back what they spent and more. How long was Doyle at Cork for ?

Doyle signed at the start of the 2004 season from Pat's and left I think ten games or so into the 2005 season. Cork got money because he was under contract, not because of the U-23, two-year-stay rule.

well it wasn't bad business for Cork really was it ? The fact is there not Reading and never will be, and the player wanted to go. And I think if a young Irish player gets offered the chance to play at a higher level in there head there gone already. I'm sure cork are p****d off at how much Doyle is worth now but they couldn't offer him that platform even if he stayed with them all his career, he would never be worth the money he is now.

Fairly short article...I'll post it up as I can't find any link.

Dicker's performances for Ireland's victorious under-21 side at the Madeira tournament last week have not gone unnoticed.
Charlton's Portuguese scout took a particular shine to the 19-year-old midfielder.
The Premiership club are now set to watch him very closely, starting with the under-21 friendly with Sweden at United Park next Tuesday.
UCD boss Pete Mahon said "I was pleased to hear both Gary and Darren did well in Madeira. They played a big part.
"Gary's under contract here until the end of the year. When the time comes, we'll sit down with Gary, his parents and the directors of the club here and we'll speak to any interested parties."
Realistically, if we got another good season out of Gaz - who'll be here three years in November, not two, so you can add 50% to the figure I worked out above... - got E100k say and brought Ronan Finn though, who looks a very similar player, I suppose we couldn't complain too much.

i taught last year was his first full year? im sure if a good offer comes in though he'll be gone, Pete Mahon said he was under contract he didn't say he will see it out, he said when the time comes. At the moment its seems like it's only talk! if a sloid offer comes in UCD could be without him before the season starts. I wonder how long it would be for Quigley to be snapped up.

The transfer window won't open again for English clubs until August I think, so he'll be around for a while. I can't tell you the exact date young Gary joined but he was certainly there the season before last when we won the First Division. He definitely scored a goal of two and figure somewhat towards the end of the season.

He made his debut in the League Cup Quarter-final against Bohs in about June 2004 - probably had just signed at that stage. Alan Cawley also joined mid-way through a season, but the club back-dated his contract to the start of the season, so Dicker would probably technically be with us two years already.

That back dated contract rule was changed as a result of the Cawley incident.

The way I see it, if Charlton want him they won't wait out his contract to save themselves money which, to them, is quite small.

yeah i taught so it seems like a bit of a mad rule alright ... I'm sure if Charlton want him they'll get him, who knows he could be at UCD for another year, talk is cheap and things fall apart all the time in football.
