    Save les frères Hargadons

Lads I have potentially devastating news.

There are plans to demolish Les freres Hargadons (could someone tell me which way the accent goes) to build a shopping centre.

Moves are being made to protect this piece of UCD away trip heritage...

    From the Sligo Champion:

Moves under way to preserve unique pub

    By Leo Gray

Urgent moves are under way to ensure the preservation of one of Sligo's oldest pubs, Hargadon's, in O'Connell Street.

Sligo Borough Council has today issued public notice of its intention to add the premises to the record of protected structures in the City and Environs Development Plan.

The move comes in the wake of speculation that the interior of the pub might be redeveloped.

The elected members of Sligo Borough Council voted to include the building in the list of protected structures in the 2003 draft development plan but it was inadvertently omitted in the published plan.

Last week, former Mayor, Clr. Declan Bree, contacted County Manager, Mr Hubert Kearins, outlining the need to take immediate action to protect the Hargadon's building.

The Manager undertook to examine the matter and this week the Borough Council issued a public notice confirming its intention to add the Hargadon's property to the list of protected structures.

Written submissions or observations in respect of the proposal to add the building to the list can be submitted to the Borough Council before September 29th.

The submissions will be considered by the elected members of the Borough Council before a final decision is taken in relation to the inclusion of the building on the record of protected structures.

The Hargadon's property was built around the 1850s and most of the original interior structure is still in place. There has been a public house on the premises since 1868 and the existing pub front was built in 1890.

Hargadon's is known throughout the country for its unique style and is a popular attraction for visitors from all over the world.

"Hargadon's is a unique part of Sligo's architectural, historical and cultural heritage and it is vital that the necessary steps are taken to ensure its protection", said Clr. Bree.
    -----------------------------

We should keep an eye on developments. Remember they could be in the Premier next year and there's an outside chance (if we both win) that we could draw them away in the Cup. I want that pub to be there next time I visit.

What's the 'Les freres... ' about?

We learnt of the pub's existence thanks to a French launguage guidebook of Ireland, called Le Routard, which recommended the pub. Whether they actually changed the name to Les Freres is unclear, as I can't remember, but what matters is that we did change the name and so shall forever be known as Les Freres Hargadons as opposed to Hargadon Brothers.

They can't knock it down! Les Frères Hargadons is a national treasure (or at least a drunken UCD away trip treasure). If they do build a shopping centre, I reckon we should go member of the travelling community drinking in it the next time we're down.

                Sblack person!

The only thing they should do is level the floor. That's a bit of an awkward one to negotiate after a few pints and with three more in your hands!

Nonsense. It should be kept as it is. It was funny watching people with poor balance spilling Bulmers on the floor.

Actually, I would've drunk the first inch of the Bulmers but not the Guinness, so it'd've been the Guinness I as spilling.

Wasn't talking about you solely. It'd take a bit of work to spill Guinness from under the head anyway so I'm not too worried.

                        That sounds like a wager!

I think the reason UCD fans are so found of it is because the gradient reminds us of Belfield Park.
" I'll go right up to here,
                          it can't possibly hurt.
All they will find is my
                          beer and my shirt."
