Boylesports Sponsorship

Following the acquisition of a new sponsor, posters have been speculating on what name the new League might have. A couple or three have suggested names which are imo inappropriate, since they presume the right to use another organisation's titles, in a way which is misleading, confusing and disrespectful (as well as legally questionable).
That is the point I am seeking to make ("achieve")

You should be able to realise when people are taking the mick.


In this entire thread, I have resorted to Wiki twice (#34 and #69), citing the complete source exactly as you suggest in #69.
In both cases, my contribution/excerpt was a mere 4 lines long.
I have only used Google to navigate quickly to other reference sites (e.g. www.fai.ie or www.irishfa.com)

Please tell me where in this thread you think I have been "persistantly" [sic] quoting wiki or google. Or in which posts I have quoted more than a paragraph, or required readers to "skim waffle" etc. :rolleyes:

P.S. Still waiting on some examples of "waffle" from my posts, or cases where I failed merely to quote the opening para from wiki etc, then left the link, for readers to browse for themselves.

I merely pointed something out which was misplaced. No-one has been able to refute what I actually posted, yet few have been prepared to acknowledge that I might actually have a point.

Instead, a few individuals have resorted to "playing the man", rather than the "ball" (e.g. ifk101 accusing me of "persistant waffle", or abusing quoting conventions, or eelmonster spouting crap about bigotry etc)

I'm not angry, much less "outraged" (as one poster claimed), I'm merely irritated at having to defend myself from increasingly ad hominem replies to my posts, from people who fail to address the actual issues.

I like to think I'm reasonably well educated and literate, but I haven't got the faintest idea what you're referring to (in bold). Then again, I've never even read "Punch", even in the Doctor's Waiting Room (In fact, does it even exist?)

Afaik, the term "Beggars" was applied to the ROI team at (or maybe soon after?) Big Jack's time in charge, when by exploiting the Granny Rule to the full, the ROI was "begging" players from all over to play for them. (You know, "Beg, Steal or Borrow"?, that sort of thing)

It's commonly known in this part of Ireland that the term has been employed by sectarian xenophobes since, at least, the Catholic Relief Act of 1829 (I know Big Jack's been around a while, but surely not that long). Daniel O'Connell, who campaigned for the repeal of the remaining Penal Laws, was known variously as The Liberator, or The Emancipator or, in certain quarters, The King of the Beggars. As a matter of fact, the only time I've ever heard the term used outside of this context has been by Northern Ireland supporters describing (in this instance) the ROI.

Or are you suggesting that it's just the team and the FAI who are the target of the insult. In which case, you'll have no cause to complain when a section of the ROI support use similarly derogatory language to describe the NI team and the IFA, IIRC (and by IIRC, I mean I'm making this up), the use of such terminology only really came about after Big Billy (Billy Boys) Bingham encouraged his supporters at Windsor to sing "The Sash" with gusto in 1993. But who in their right mind (with the exception of some über-republican bigot's far right mind) would? However, and this is the bit I can't fathom, you and seemingly moderate NI supporters (even your Catholic mate) see nothing wrong with describing us (the team, our support, our country) as 'beggars'. I'm not even going to ask you to justify the 'tarmac' references.

As I pointed out to you any sponsor coming in will seek to maximise exposure for their brand name. So your prize asset of the name "Irish League" is not in danger.

I'm interested in knowing exactly the ins and outs of what the Boyle Sports sponsorship deal for League of Ireland football entails. That's what I was expecting to read about in a thread titled "Boylesports Sponsorship". I wasn't expecting to read wikipedia quotes about the Irish League.

I sometimes refer to Wiki, sometimes not. When I do, I sometimes use it, sometimes not. When I do use it, I cite it.

It is not always reliable, but it is not always unreliable. If, in my opinion, the latter applies, then I use it. Talking of which, would you actually like to dispute what I actually quoted from Wiki, or do you just prefer to make facetious remarks?

And when expressing an opinion, do you not use your own judgement as to its credibility and reliability etc? Or do you just leave that to your team of monkeys? :rolleyes:

Aside from my general reservation over associating football with gambling (e.g. i dislike that my own club Spurs, is sponsored by Mansion), I daresay it is a good thing.

But not being too familiar with the individual circumstances of Boylesports, LOI etc, I did not feel qualified to comment on this topic, so merely browsed.

Until you suggested some new names which were not yours/FAI's to use. Not only that, the fact that you could suggest them at all indicates either ignorance of the history of football throughout Ireland, or a blithe and disrespectful attitude to your footballing neighbours.

Whichever it is, I am entirely entitled to point this out. The fact that your only response has been to have a pop at me rather than my argument (and in a particularly facetious manner at that), merely vindicates me in the point I am making.
