I'm not particularly a fan of the Beatles as a band, but there are a few great tracks they have that have had some great covers.

Some of my favourites are

Siouxsie & The Banshees - Dear Prudence

Laibach - Across the Universe

Just shading it over Bowie's version

William Shatner - Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

The Breeders did 'Happiness is a warm gun' , but this isn't necessarily a favourite, just a Beatles cover I have.

Laibach, as mentioned by Bluebeard, of course went one step further and covered a complete album, Let it be. Well, it was almost a complete album. They left out the title track.

Bowie's version of Across The Universe.

Geroge Clinton did an interesting cover of Because.

Bowie's version of Across The Universe.
Bit of a borderline definition of "cover" as it features John Lennon (who also collaborated on the arrangement.)

The Optimist

The Mission - Tomorrow Never Knows
The Waterboys - Why Don't We Do It In The Road
Husker Du - Ticket To Ride
U2 - Happiness Is A Warm Gun

Of stuff not mentioned above, there's a whole album's worth of covers on the I Am Sam soundtrack too, though disappointingly I've only heard Eddie Vedder's "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" and Aimee Mann and Michael Penn's "Two Of Us", which are both decent, but largely on account of the excellence of the originals I feel. Then for novelty's sake you have Gershon Kingsley with the electro-fied "Nowhere Man" and "Paperback Writer", which as I say are merely of novelty value.

So on the basis that I don't really like the original (i.e. I actually prefer the cover), I'll follow Noby's lead and vote for the blissful "Ticket To Ride (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsgj4xcxXyA)" by The Carpenters. Amazingly dulcet. :)

Norwegian Wood - Damien Dempsey

I haven't heard this, and I really, really, hope I never do. People shouldn't cover the Beatles really. Some things shouldn't be messed with.

I haven't heard this........

I think this may compromise your argument a slight tad.

I haven't heard it either, but I do like Cornershop's version, as mentioned above.

I think this may compromise your argument a slight tad.

It wasn't really an argument. More a fervent prayer. ;)
