Surely the purpose is to suggest a letter as a form of research, and depending on the outcome of that research, to either make an informed statement, or, if things are not yet evident, to conduct further research, by suggesting another letter?

I didn't know that we were limiting ourselves to English players (should this not then be in world football?) and would this one not be for a manager, rather than player?
