Cool.
So we've one guy that I saw through to the last 8; win that and we have a medal?
One guy got knocked out in the last 16; when are the other three up? Or did I miss them?

Ken Egan's quarter final is Tuesday I think. The Brazilian didn't look great but Egan has had trouble before when expected to win. Fingers crossed.
Joyce was unlucky in some respects.
However he didn't obey instructions. Billy Walsh was roaring at him after the 2nd round and told him exactly what to do. He won the 3rd round 5-1!
Slipped back again in last round although when he was ahead with 15 seconds to go it was tough to lose. He was in tears being interviewed.

RTE making accusations that the female Chinese swimmers are on drugs. Not beyond the bounds of possibility but no mention of the "home factor" and how athletes/sportpersons in general perform much better on their home soil.

Lightweight 4 failed to make the final finishing 4th in their semi-final. They beat Italy and USA but lost out to Denmark, France and Great Britain

David O'Loughlin is going well in the track cycling,, hmm a bad last couple of laps though unlikely to make the final

Man the commentary on RTE was woeful (Egan?). Pretty much had him in the final after about 2 laps:rolleyes:
What do ye guys make of the Spanish slanty eyed thing? I dont think it was racist but God was it a silly thing to do.
Notice the Americans are getting real peed off with all the emdals China are winning. In Sports Illustrated (a very over rated mag IMHO), every day there seems to be a few anti -Chinese rants
Wonder who will come third in the medal table? Korea and Germany are having a good Olympics so far

First two rounds of the 100m over...Bolt looked awesome in his second round. Hard to know what any of the big three are holding back for the final, but, what a race it should be. Semi finals and final tomorrow.

Great run by Roisin McGettigan in the 3k steeplechase to come 2nd in her heat in a time of 9:29 and easily qualify for the final, looking comfortable. Fionnuala Britton went out in the same event even though recording a season's best 9:44, coming tenth in her heat.
Cragg was disappoing in the 1,500m finishing well outside the qualification places, but it is his weaker event.
Denis Lynch is in joint 14th place after the first individual jumping qualifier after only picking up 1 time fault, which leaves him in a good position.

Following on from the Spain slanty eyed thing..............just after reading that it was Sid Lowe, the guardians excellent football writer who broke the story, and it seems he is getting a hell of a lot of grief for it in Spain

Just back from Sweden. Olympics huge there. I think the stte shannel is now 24 hours coverage. Large daily supplememnts in all the 'papers too. Missed a good bit of the Irish stuff
Anyway the Mens 100m Semis are on just after 1pm our time. The final is the last athletics event of the day and is on at 3.30pm

Denis Lynch just completed his second round of jumping and only picked up 1 time fault again, which should leave him in a very strong position at the end of the day, lying at the moment joint 1st after 12 competitors.
Derval O Rourke crashed out of the 100m hurdles only finishing her heat in 6th place and well out of contention.
Roisin McGettigan runs at 2.30 in the steeplechase final for anyone interested.

did anybody watch Sutherland in the boxing last night? What a monster - this guy will make serious money if he turns pro. 3 boxers in the Q Finals. Paddy Barnes and Egan are one victory away from a medal.
Bolt in the 100m final = wow. Nothing else you can say really.

Lynch is still Joint first in showjumping after 29 competitors. The top riders from each team are still to come though. He'll definitely be top ten and of course at most 2 faults behind the leader.

I'm not sure what was expected of her but she was nowhere near the front at any time during the race.
At least she didn't suffer the embarassing fate of the Spaniard.
She did. She just didn't fall on camera. Otherwise she wouldn't have been near last...
Lynch is 4th on 2 faults after 2 rounds of jumping. 3 more rounds to go though
What do ye guys make of the Spanish slanty eyed thing? I dont think it was racist but God was it a silly thing to do.
Was away for the last few days so kind of out of the loop, anyone maybe able to fill me in on this?

brilliant - who said white guys cannot sprint?! :D
Genetics...
Anyway he got an OK semi draw so he has a chance at the final. He avoided Ndure, Bolt, Spearman and Crawford, so he'd have to be happy with that
Dennis Lynch had 6 faults today in the showjumping and lies in joint 8th position. He's on a total of 8, and the leader is on 3.

Do those faults carry into the final or is it a clean slate?

World record for Isinbayeva. Her 24th
Great run by Hession today. Very close to PB & if he can get a better start he could break if as was very strong in the last 50m. Won;t see many white guys in the final.
Agree about Sutherland. Great punch for an amateur. Between one of the rounds he didn't even sit down. He is going pro after the Olympics.
Bolt is too fast to be legal. If he tried he would have been closer to 9.50 than 9.69.

Pictures of a statue being unveiled to Tony "Socks" Byrne in Drogheda in 2006 I think.
Bronze medal winner in boxing in 1956. Still hale and hearty by the looks of it.
Do those faults carry into the final or is it a clean slate?
Faults carry through

Faults carry through
I'm fairly sure they don't. A guy from the Army Equatation School just said it on RTE.
The faults in the qualifying round decide the running order only.
They carried through 4 years ago

There are 2 rounds on Thursday.
The top 20 after the first round jump again and the total of those 2 rounds decide the medals.

Listening to Timmy McCarthy doing the basketball on RTE. Hilarious, he treats every game like the last minute of the final.
Favourite phrase is definitely- "REJECTED!!!!!"

Brilliant news. Just turned on Radio 1 extra thinking this was on at 1. Des Cahill is playing R Kelly's 'The World's Greatest', I can't listen to that song without thinking of the the parody version 'World's Greatest Statutory Rapist', if you've never heard it you tube it :)
Hopefully Egan can follow on from that.

You mean he's guaranteed at least Bronze... I remember them making this same mistake in 1992 :D
Although in saying that he's against one of the best pound for pound amateurs in the world in the semi.
10 olympic medlas in total for Ireland. We've had 100 fighters in total in the olympics, and we've won 20 medals in all sports
