Maybe this should be in PreOlympic thread but here goes.

Sports Illustrated have predicted all the medal winners in the Olympics. Only Paddy Barnes picked from Ireland.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/olympics/2008/writers/brian_cazeneuve/07/29/medal.picks0804/index.html
Just goes to show the value of the draw. All 4 boxers picked in Ken Egan's weight are in the same half of the draw (meaning only 2 can medal). I honestly believe Egan will win Silver

I've downloadednot one but two, proxy servers in an attempt to hide my IP address so I can somehow get to watch RTE.ie coverage of the Irish competitiors in action.

Nothing. P!ssing into the wind as usual.

I don't know if this works but it is worth a try.
I expect it won't work but you never know.

No the dressage isn't over, it's really in the early stages and Austin O Connor and Geoff Curran are 14th and 20th respectively after 23 riders, but it is only the first part of the 3 day event so.....

At the moment Derek Burnett is involved in the trap qualificition in the shooting, but isn't on tele, and Siobhan Byrne is the next Irish competitor in action at 3am!!:p

Siobhan Byrne lost ion the first round of the Fencing. She was the 35th seed with only 3 South African's (token African reps) behind her.

Burnett got 24 out of 25 targets in the shooting. 5 shooters got 25. 12 others got 24

Our 3 day eventing team is 8th after 2 riders each (France isn't ranked as it only has one rider so far with one of their top horses failing the medical).

Individually, O'Connor is 15th and Curran 22nd of 25 riders so far. O'Connor is 13 points off 3rd place.

Burnett had a disappointing 22 in his 2nd round. He's in 21st place with 46. Equal 6th have 48

Scott Evans just lost a tight first set in the Badminton (21-18)

Oh and the Czech republic won the first gold medal (in shooting)

Egan won in the boxing and now faces a Turkish lad who didn't look anything special (bout straight after - I was a bit hungover this morning and not my usual sharp self so forgot the name!!!). Decent chance of a medal if he boxes as well as he did today.

Evans lost a very tight 3rd set 21-19

Unlucky...
Was extremely unlucky. Great effort to come back in the second set and pull ahead in the third. In the end nerves got to him when 18-15 up in the decider. Fair play to Zwiebler though for keeping his cool.

He deserved to go through I felt, although obviously a bit biased. A couple of unforced errors cost him the first set. If he can cut them out he'll shoot up the rankings.

Reaction (http://www.rte.ie/sport/olympics2008/2008/0809/evans.html).

RTE were saying that he was also competing in the 200imedley?

Great win for Magee in the badminton, Evans was awful unlucky. I felt that Evans was more worthwhile for the win, as the Estonian playing Magee in fairness did make an awful lot of silly mistakes.

The eventers did ok apart from our best hope Geoff Curran. His complaint was that the big screen showing his test was too low, thus his horse was concentrating on watching himself on the screen:ball: Geoff looked very dissatisfied with the outcome, and is now lying 38th of the 44 who competed today. Austin O' Connor and Louise Lyons, lying in 26th and 35th place respectively, seemed pretty content with their tests. The team are lying 2nd last at the moment.

Good to see the men's 4 qualify, but it will be a big ask for them to qualify for the final.

Derek Burnett will be disappointed to be only ranked 15th at this stage, and being 3 shots off the final qualifying place, it will be a miracle if he qualified for the final but who knows.

Chloe just lost 21-12, 21-14.

Didn't see it as I, I must assume, am mentally retarded and forgot to watch it but looks like she was behind throughout (http://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/ENG/INF/BD/C73/BDW001515.shtml#BDW001515) really. Still, far from a disgraceful result against a decent player who's won a few good tournaments. And at least she's young and has yesterday's win to fondly remember.

Is it just me or are referees in amateur boxing matches overly fussy? They seem to stop the boxing every 5 seconds to admonish one of the boxers for some minor infraction instead of letting them get on with it.

Depends on the ref, and the fighters really. Joyce's fight was stop tart, I@ve watched others with a better flow.

Fabulous result for Joyce. Still a tough route for him to medal though.

Worst performance of the morning from Myles Dungan who completley wrote off the Poles at the start of the race, saying they would be tailed off.

Considering Ireland only took one of the last 2 qualifying places and the Poles presumably qualified from last years World Championships ahead of us it sounded a bit silly.

I'd have a look at sports that I wouldn't have a look at in a blue moon.
I'm glad RTE assume almost total ignorance and usually have an explanation for dummies segment.

The Boxing looks quality stuff.
When Ken Egan got knocked down, his opponent did not score a point for that punch. What more evidence would the Judges need
Amateur Boxing use to be the (only?) sport that you didn't actually know what the score was as the bout progressed.

Eoin Rheinisch 18th of 21 after first run. Needs a big improvement to make the top 15 cut after 2nd run.

Unless horses have to pull out from about 6 teams we won't medal. 5 points for a fence down in the showjumping part so we'd need 3 clear rounds and hope that the rest have about 20 fences down (per team)

He's made the top 15 for tomorrow's semi. He was ranked 12th in the 2nd run 9an that was with 2 penalties. He'd have been 13th overall without them.

Only 21, unless your counting the gates:D

Eoin did well to get through after having the 2 second penalty, but was lucky that the American received a 50 point penalty. It is a good sport to watch I must say and the kind of sport that nearly everyone in the field can medal, although I'd say Eoin would need a bit of luck to get in the top 3.

Melanie Nocher finished 7th in her heat after stopping to adjust her goggles in the middle of the pool:confused: but it wasn't her main event. The commentator said he had never seen that happen before in a major comp.

You can excuse some things to inexperience but wearing wrong size goggles must be like footballer wearing incorrect sized boots. I am sure the swimmer is disappointed but hard to excuse that.

Good that sailors won a race as maybe shows they can win again.

Boxers & female badminton seem to be the only performers so far as the remainder of the results have been poor (taking rankings etc... into consideration) so far...
