Republic of Ireland Coach Giovanni Trapattoni has praised goalkeeper Shay Given and likened him to Azzurri No 1 Gigi Buffon. The Newcastle United shot-stopper was excellent in a 0-0 draw away to Montenegro and Trap insists he was the equal of Juve's £32.6m man. “I know he is a very, very good goalkeeper,” said the ex-Italy boss. “When the ball was deflected, I saw it going towards the post and I thought it was a goal. But Shay saved it and for me, he is one of the best in Europe, the same as Buffon. We have a saying in Italy that once you praise somebody to much, you have to touch wood, but his performance last night was very good.”

Sad but true story:

My friend's uncle, who was seriously ill from cancer, was out in the Portmarnock Hotel a few weeks ago and the team was there. He saw Trappatoni and told him about his illness and asked could he have his photograph taken with him. Trapps of course agreed with the words:

"Like the Irish team, you gotta have de faith".

My friend's uncle died shortly afterwards but was moved by Trapps words and delighted to have had the photo taken with him.

"When the water is still in the summer, it stagnates and smells, so you have to change".

On our world cup qualification hopes following the Bulgaria match:

"Today we have a little advantage, but only a little advantage. I do not talk about percentages. I know that wood is wood and the ground is the ground."

"I speak many times about Stephen Ireland, that he is shy like a hedgehog"

:D haha, he has a way with words alright - although no doubt Ireland took that as a major insult to his hair or something...

Anyone else think his english has improved an awful lot, although I do get the impression he plays up his lack of english at times. He was asked a question last night about the Italian game and he answered the question saying what folan offers to the team.
