The Cobh semi final saga brought big crowds to the Showgrounds in 1983. Some footage from the final replay here http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=tu-tGLhjM3I.

The biggest crowd ever witnessed in the Showgrounds was probably the League cliniching win against Shams in 1977.

Any idea of the numbers?

This is what I have regarding highest attendance:

Richmond Park: 13,000

Not a chance I'd reckon, unless it dates back before I started going in the 80s. Safe-holding capacity of Richmond is 5,400 although the ground could probably hold 6,500 or 7,000 at a squash. I seem to remember talk of a 7,500 crowd in the mid-nineties (a friendly against Celtic I think) although that was the Dolan era when attendances tended to be as inflated as his belly.

Apparently the safe holding capacity of any ground is based on the number and width of exit gates. It's calculated to allow to safe outflow of spectators in an emergency. I think there's a similar calculation based on the numbers of turnstiles and the final figure is the lower of the two.

On the road at the moment, but will post record attendances from copy of Supporters guide to Irish Football (South & North) unless someone beats me to it.

Just been to Richmond Park to watch Pats and Longford, if the stand side was once terracing then 10,000-13000 could have been possible when no proper crowd limits.

There used to be a smaller stand there with small terraces either side and the Inchicore end used to be flat so you could only see the game from pitchside so attendances couldn't have been much more in the past.

As I recall, the embankments at the Lodge were covered in grass. Was there ever a mud slde ?

I was at Flower Lodge when Trevor Brooking was playing for City.

Unfortunatly records do not appear to be precise, as I dare say there may be instances as indicated above where there has been a greater record at another ground but records shown are for current ground.
UCD may also be an example - did they not once get more at annother ground than 4000 when they played in Europe.

Pretty much all records are guesses anyway, and we've seen on his forum how wildly inaccurate they can be. Until recently clubs weren't forced to count numbers through the gate and none did. SOme reported the gate takings, but considering the amount of concessions that operated when crowds were at their peak, getting actual figures for any league game is impossible

9000 against Everton (subject to Dodge's comments), but that game was in Tolka.

Derry City's record is an IL game, 12200 against Linfield February 1966.

I was at that.....the only time I saw Derry at the Brandy while they were in the IL. It was a scoreless draw and Linfield went on to win the League.
