I was wondering how many former U21 managers have gone on to manage the senior England team, other than the current manager, and according to this - https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/england-u21/mitarbeiterhistorie/verein/9565 - three U21 managers since 1989 - Southgate, Roy Hodgson (who took charge of the U21s for one game), and Stuart Pearce, who was caretaker manager for the senior team for one game - have also managed the senior team, so that statement is patently ridiculous.
I don't think what you've outlined makes it a ridiculous statement though. Have so few U21 managers stepped up because they were appointed at underage level but weren't suitable for senior? It could still be a good aspiration that a 21s coach should in time be seen as a contender for the senior role.

Have so few U21 managers stepped up because they were appointed at underage level but weren't suitable for senior? If only three managers in the last 30 years have gone on to manage the England team, and two of them have tenuous links to it, then I don't see why the U21 manager *has* to be a potential future senior manager.

But maybe so few have made the jump in the past 30 years precisely because they didn't consider that to be a requirement? And maybe experience from elsewhere in the football world is that it's something that should be considered?

I don't think it's entirely unreasonable. Whereas the Carsley comments are clearly daft.

Whereas the Carsley comments are clearly daft.If ex-Irish players can play for England they can certainly manage England.

Why not push for Carsley now? This would be the time to get a new man in. He seems to have what we're looking for but there's one thing going against him.......HANDBALL!!!! :(

Ya that game against turkey and then he downplayed it as his fault. Very annoying still haven't forgotten

Better to let Kenny start the next campaign so the next guy doesn't get thrown into an impossible situation. Once we're out of contention (usually after two games under Kenny) then make the switch, be it Carsley or whoever. They can use the rest of the year to build a settled team and game plan with no pressure on the team.

Unfortunately that's the best we can hope for from 2023.

Carsley isn't gonna walk away before the U21 Euros next summer. Earliest he'll take the job if the FAI approach him and he wants it would the end of the summer before the games against France and Holland. Don't see any new coach who fancies that as their first games in charge.
