Did anyone watch the new episode tonight? The one where they rewrote Simpsons history, put Marge in college in the early 90s and had Homer as Kurt Cobain? Is this show even trying to be funny anymore? I stopped watching years ago, but have recently caught this episode and the one where they take off the Departed. In both instances it's plainly obvious that they aren't even trying to make humourous cultural references (like South Park do), more they are just trying to fill episodes and series. Considering how bad this TV show has become I have two questions, does anyone still regard this as the greatest TV show of all time, or has Matt Groenings quest for more cash ruined the reputation of what was once a great show. Laughably I read an interview with Groening who claims that the current crop of episodes are among the best the Simpsons have ever produced

Of course he'd say it. It's been going downhill since Conan O'Brien left. Now and again, they come up with an episode that's funny but I don't watch The Simpsons as ritually as I used to.

I still regard it as being one of the finest ,They would have been doing well to maintain the flawless standards from around 1991-1998 , The new episodes are still decent enough better than most things on television anyway .

That is crazy talk! How dare you call Matt Groening's integrity into question!!

I say this as someone who thinks both the Simpsons (series 3-8) and Futurama are some of the greatest TV ever produced, Matt Groening is a worthless hack. If the guy gave any sort of a **** about the characters he has created the show would have ended when he left for Futurama. It would not have been put into the hands of people who used to write for Blossom. Since then we have had the continuity of the show ruined(I know it's a cartoon, but tonights episode putting Bart being born in the year 2000 was the pits), and have had one of the more lovable characters of all time in Homer being turned into a dislikable *******. Where once he was a loving but dimwitted father, he is now a complete and utter ignorant piece of ****, not funny in any way, just offensive. As you know Wangball Eric Cartman is probably my favourite character TV has ever produced, but his charcter is based around him being naturally racist and offensive, Homer's wasn't, and turning him in that direction smacks of copying ideas from other shows (South Park and Family Guy in this instance).

Groening is a cash driven moron who has taken what was undoubtably the greatest TV show of all time and nosedived it out of the top ten through his sheer greed. People who didn't love the show in the 90s might find my anger at him bemusing, but people who once loved the show and now think it is rubbish will understand :)

In both instances it's plainly obvious that they aren't even trying to make humourous cultural references (like South Park do) : Always worth repeating for the sake of the young uns that, but for the simpsons, your South Parks, Family Guys etc... would be filling airtime on Porn channels the way Fritz the Cat used to. They would be nowhere near a mass audience.

No ...but the concept as you explained it has some merit though I can't judge on the outcome. Timeline was always messy and somewhat improbable in the Simpsons.

noody can say simpsons isnt the best animated show ever produced, it is, but the new episodes are cack, the one which ricky gervais did, was butal beyond desire lads, total crap!!! but as jebus said if you love the show you undestand, for cureent episodes, south park and family guy are streets ahead but simpsons will always be number one for the decade of priceless episodes it gave us the sooner it stops the better.

I understand that without the Simpsons we wouldn't have South Park, Family Guy, Futurama or even shows like the Critic or Duckman, but that still doesn't stop me thinking that the current crop (well the last 7 series really) have been useless, nor does it stop me wishing they had ended it with Season 9

No it has'nt you do realise Conan only worked on 4 episodes between season 2-4?. I just checked that the last day actually!.

''From 1991 - 1993, O'Brien was a writer and producer for The Simpsons,[9] credited as writer or cowriter of four episodes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conan_o%27brien

Everything up to season 13-14 is top class, with quality getting better as you go back peaking at seasons 3-4, but with 13/14 been great in there own right!

I won't watch any ones after 14 though, they have that newer look and while good to watch are'nt funny at all tbh.

I actually just watched a few from season 19 in the past few days, got sick of watching seasons 2-14(must have watched each 2-3 times over the past year and a half)s, the first of which was ''the debarted'' i found this one to be a lot better then what's been served up the past few years so watched a couple of more which were ok.

The one about Marge in college, and Homer a rock star i watched a few weeks ago and tbh i'd agree it was utter garbage!!

They defo should have packed it in a few years ago though, was'nt any surprise the film was rubbish too, was 5 years too late IMO!.

Regardless of adult opinion i'd say most kids who would'nt get the jokes anyway still enjoy it, so i can see why it's still going!!

One of the few to top that episode was where Homer finally lands on his feet and secures a great job in a modern, well maintained home in a great town.

He gets on great with his Boss (whose name escapes me, Dr Scorpio?), who is an affable, devil may care. sort of bloke. He's also a notorious International terrorist :D

Sample Quote:

Homer "I've decided I'm going to have to leave and go home"

The show just started dying on its ar$e around season 9 or 10 and started going (very quickly) downhill from there on in.

If it had stopped at season 10 then it would quite rightly be considered the greatest TV show ever made but the fact that they still spit out any ould sh!te to grab a quick buck demeans it greatly imho....

I mean what season is it on now...15 or 16? That's a long long time since they made an episode that could be considered a classic. They seemed to drop the subtle humour of old and just replaced it with very very poor slapstick.

Didn't even bother wasting my money to watch the movie as I presume its more of the same....

Watched both twice now and enjoyed parts of both but just felt an hour plus is too much for these shows that they just pad out a episode to make it over an hour long and the jokes are so far apart it gets quite boring.

But i guess there is only so many jokes out there that between the simpsons and futurama and the movie versions that its going to be very hard to keep going.

Only TV cartoon to movie that worked was south park that was brilliant. But even the shows took a massive dip when they started just slagging off celebs every week at least they have gone back to just doing funny stories lately with the odd celeb bashing for good measure.

What could be good is Clevland a spin off from family guy , Seth macfarlane and one of the writers from the simpsons are writting it.

Jebus is indeed a reference to a Simpsons episode, the one where Homer gets on a plane to escape the PBS people and realises he's going to a missionary island and says,

'Save me Jebus!', after earlier in the showing saying that he doesn't even believe in Jebus :D

Like I said though, up to and including Season 9 it was the greatest show ever made, the new episodes just taints the shows legacy though

For me it was at its peak from series 4-7, seasons 3 & 8 were still great but just a notch below its prime, 1,2 & 9 were good but from 10 onwards it declined rapidly, I just like to pretend it finished after season 9 its not that hard and nobody forces you to watch the new ones.
Anyway I'm grateful to Groening as the Simpsons is probably the best thing to ever come out of America, Futurama was very good too while it lasted a very underrated show IMO, does Groening even have control over the Simpsons anymore? I thought he gave up control of the series when he went to work on Futurama.

There's a bit in the episode where Lisa likes Nelson, where Lisa gives Milhouse a note saying "guess who likes you?". Milhouse passed it on to Nelson, who thinks it actually came from Milhouse. Favourite Marge and Homer dialogue,

Bart comes home from his part time job at Krusty's TV show looking upset

Marge: Something seems to be the matter with Bart
Homer (reading the paper): Probably needs new glasses
Marge: No it seems to be something else
Homer: Probably misses his old glasses
Marge: I'd ask him, but then I'd be afraid of smothering him
Homer: Yeah, and then we'd get the chair

Is that the episode with Moulder and Scully in it from the X Files?

There's a classic bit in that where "the Feds" pay a visit to Mo's Tavern and start asking questions.

As soon as they're gone, Mo rushes to a backroom off the bar and roars something like "Ok, its over. They're on to us!!!",

School talent night (or something similar)......

Onto the stage walks groundskeeper Willie in kilt with a set of golf clubs in a golf bag...

"Does anybody here hail from the fair city of Edinburgh?"........

silence from the crowd

"Have you ever noticed how a North Edinburgh golfer adresses the ball like this (addresses an imaginary golf ball, wiggling hips)......but a South Edinburgh golfer addresses the ball like this (addresses an imaginary ball, wiggling hips is a marginally different manner)"......

silence from the crowd.

Willie gets angry - "Oh I see, you only think Willie is funny when he's mopping up your wee kiddies puke!"

Crowd burst into laughter and applause

Willie (genuinely)- "Thanks, you've been great".......walks off.

there were a couple of classics on sky yesterday, including the monorail one, which contrast so sharply with the stale efforts of recent series.

Mr Burns pretending to be "Mr Snrub" had be chuckling.

Reminds me of when Bart is auditioning to be Burns' heir and Homer gives his some cards to read from. "Hi Mr..Curns. Me. Want. Money. Bad" The later Bart calls him Burns and Homer shouts out from the side "It's Curns, stupid!" :D
