For the younger members ( like myself ) some of the above would be the ones that go "oh ya i know that one" when ye hear it but not the name itself...

no, hated it, thought i would post that to prove my point :D

No I was compiling my list, but generally it wouldn't be a type of music I would listen to on a consistent basis....

I think you have to have Soft Cell's Tainted Love in that list. A Depeche Mode song or two should also be included, perhaps Enjoy the Silence.

BTW that's an impressive list. Is it for your trip to Brussels?

Good call. No Stone roses which I'm surprised about.

Enjoy the Silence missed the eighties by a month or so.

Paul, your list is nicely arranged alphabetically. Unfortunately it jumps from song/artist format to artist/song, which makes it a pig to read. Plus I can't see any Kajagoogoo. Surely an oversight.

Anyway, for me this breaks down into two separate lists. There's the list of bands from the eighties that I like, and there's "80s music" as a kind of genre in itself.

For the former I would include the likes of the Stone Roses, Fall, Smiths, JAMC, Cocteau Twins, The Jam (partly), Public Enemy, Pixies, Minutemen etc.

The latter list would be more pop/cheese/novelty orientated.

Some of these were partly 80's too -

House of Love, Guns 'N Roses, The Housemartins, Happy Mondays

dexys

*slaps forehead; hangs head in shame*

How did I not think of them. You also have a lot of the two-tone stuff that was late 70s early 80s.

Wolfie, the Housemartins were completely eighties, and yes should be on the list.

That list has more cheese than the silos at a Goodfellahs manufacturing plant.

What's worse, I hereby call Shenanigans!

List looks suspiciously like a downloaded playlist from a Today FM 80's show or possibly some Australian equivalent going by the suspicious amount of Australasian muck some of which wasn't even released here much less a hit.

Good call. No Stone roses which I'm surprised about.

I would consider them early 90s.....

Good call on depeche mode though enjoy the silence remake was better and thus not 80s :D

No its not my list for brussels, but maybe I should have it if the place is really that bad...

chesney chawke early 90s. I didnt include bands ( bar one u2 song and a few others ) that have been going constantly through, nor those that just appeared in late 80's and were actually big in the 90s.....

Its cheesy yes, but its the "80s genre" of music that people would most associate with like noby said.

If i was to do another list, it would be rock/indie list of the 90s which would have hte likes of g n r, motley crue, depeche mode, u2, metallica, megadeth, acdc, cheap tricks ( suppose more 70s ) pat benatar, possibly madness, housemartins, all that sorta stuff....

But most of their (early) singles were in the eighties.

And the original wasn't eighties either.

Are we going by an arbitrary condition of what you consider to be eighties or, you know, actual dates?

ok well what i consider then :D Sorry for not being as old as you ;)

Was enjoy the silence 1993 then or when was it ( not going to google )?!

Primal scream and stone roses i always just "thought of" as early 90s, maybe because of their sound i spose and the scene ( happy mondays etc ). Though when I think about it, new order weren't far removed from that either...

so does that clear it up for you. The above list would be what I consider to be the 80s ( sound etc )

By the way is Peter anything to Ed?

I repeat:
"Enjoy the Silence missed the eighties by a month or so."

You do the maths.

And yes, Stone Roses, Primal Scream etc. get lumped into that early 90s 'Baggy' genre, but a lot of their output was in the eighties.

From Wikipedia - "Chesney Lee Hawkes (born 22 September 1971), is an English pop singer, songwriter, and occasional actor. He is best known for his one and only British chart-topping Single "The One and Only", which was released in March 1991".

It was 90's alright. Still a pile of crap, obviously.

Very clever, Paul. No I'm not American, why?

I like cheesy 80s as much as yourself (well, maybe not that much), but I also have no trouble in calling the majority of it crap. Throw-away, cheesy, fun crap. In the right context it's great.

Oh and Trio is the group you're looking for. Another good song.
Also 'In the kitchen at parties'.
Bananarama went too much under the thumb of SAW and became awful, but I like their earlier stuff as well as some of their SAW stuff.

Cars - Paul Newman

I know Paul was quite fond of motor racing, but as far as I know he never went as far as recording an ode to the sport...;)

(I think Gary is the name you were looking for)

Most of your list would send me running for some cotton wool to stuff my ears with tbh Paul. (exceptions are Talking Heads, though not their best work listed by you, and Crowded House).

No REM or Elvis Costello, Lloyd Cole, Billy Bragg, Aztec Camera, whats with that ? OK not party music maybe, but some of the best music of that decade made by those acts.

I started the post cos I was just wondering for myself what others would be, it wasn't a, this is my list and thats it, my knowledge of 80s music is limited to be honest cos I didnt grow up around then. So I expected there to be lots of missing songs and also errors....

The reference to the american part was about the way you said "ill let you do the maths" even with the s it still sounds american...;)

Trio, thats the band, awful catchy song, though id say after listening to it about 10 times in a row you would get bored. Its so simple its genius. :)

I think people are mistaking what I meant by party music. It is definitely not my favourite music, but its definitely party style if you ask me....

I also mentioned Tony, that I was putting in bands that went through the 80s and 90s - the 90s being their bigger music era- ( bar u2 really ) or that were rock such as REM or Elvis Costello above. But to be honest I don't know any Lloyd Cole or maybe I do but don't realise?!

i probably should have added flock of seaguls I ran to this. NOt that poxy bowling for soup version.

One thing that does annoy me about the majority of music from the 80s is when it breaks from a chorus to an interlude, and the music stops for about 5 seconds and the singer interjects with the main lyric of the song. What is this called and does it annoying anyone else? I think it sorta ruins the song, much in the same way it ruins Love Hurts by Nazareth when they are building up the song and then it just stops dead and goes slow again when it would be better had it continued to a crescendo.
