View Full Version : Prices of friendlies
What are teams charging for their pre-season friendlies?
It was 5euro into our game against Shels which was fair but just read that Galway are charging 20euro for their one against Limerick
Is it just me that thinks that's completely exorbitant?
What are other teams charging?

Galway are charging 20euro for their one against Limerick :eek:That is definitely way OTT for a friendly against FD opposition in my opinion.

It was a tenner in for Kildare-Rovers, their standard entrance fee. Fair play though, they gave out free teamsheets at the gate! A fiver to see the return of Georgie was excellent value. Compensated for having to go to Cabra to see it! Plus its always a privilege to hear the Cork wit!

Oh, did he turn up at the game?
Bohs v Mons was 10
Longford v Rovers was 5
Dundalk v Drogs was 10
Galway v Athlone 20
At galway last night the guy in front of me had a rave at the ticket kiosk when they said 20e - in the end he said thats a disgrace to see them play athlone in a meaningless friendly on a wet night - and decided to leave
Saw the same guy at half time and he said he waited til game had started about 30 mins and just walked in for free as ticket kiosk was closed and nobody at the turnstyle - although 20 is steep I dont mind paying it really but when someone then walks in for free half an hour later it ****es me of somewhat
On a side note the U19 friendlies v the czechs, one in utd park, the other at home farm were 10

€20 is a disgrace and considering the quality(?) on display it was pure rip off. It's also our only friendly at home so one would think the club would have used the opportunity to gain support for the coming season.

Yer i would say 20 Euro is way over the top but again as said season ticket holders did get in for free and for those who did pay they could sit in the new stand at no extra charge . The reason i said that as when the season starts it's 25 Euro for the new stand !!!!!!!
It pays to have a season ticket .

€20 to watch LOI friendlies is a disgrace. In fact paying €20 or more to watch any game is a disgrace. If you want to watch Serie A, it's less than that.
Galway are not the only club to have such prices, but soon, with unemployment and inflation rising, only the hard core of those clubs will go every week.

I'm not defending €20 for a friendly but the comparison doesn't really work. It's easy for Serie A clubs to charge a little less than eL clubs for a number of reasons. For a start, the crowds are larger so gate receipts are larger, sponsorship income and tv revenue are also much larger. Ireland also has one of the highest costs of living in Europe so naturally tickets will be more expensive. Galway are at least honest in their aims, they admit they intend to spend large and further increase their budget, that's not going to be paid for out of thin air. They'll hope the increased revenue will bring a better product and therefore maintain attendances at the increased price. I don't think they'll be all that better and attendances will probably suffer but you can see where they're coming from.
Also, if inflation is rising then shouldn't ticket prices rise also? Surely inflation means larger costs fopr clubs hence they need to raise more income.

It does when you only compare quality of football and ticket prices. The eL must be the most over-priced league in Europe under that comparison.
When you factor in cost of living, inflation etc, I agree that the issue becomes less clear cut. But 25 euros is robbery by any standard in my opinion.
And I disagree with the argument (not made by you in the post, but it has been made by others) that if crowds were bigger, prices would go down. If Galway, for example, were getting 10,000 people paying 25 euros, why on earth would they reduce their prices to, say, 20 euros?
Poor Student
10/02/2008, 8:00 AM
Whether clubs would reduce or not in that hypothetical situation the fact is that they cannot afford to price comparatively on quality. In that case what should clubs be charging, €5?

I agree completely.
You are right when you say that the lack of TV money and sponsorship means that the other main way to generate revenue - ticket prices - must be exploited.
I think a lot of people realise that they are paying a lot in terms of the quality of football they're watching, and the surroundings in which they're watching it. But fans don't mind this, up to a point, as they know the club needs to charge those prices, and they are willing to pay.
But there is a point where enough people will baulk at the price, and the drop in attendance will mean the increase in prices is actually counter-productive. I'd say 25 euros would be very close to, if not over, that point.

I reckon they've crossed that line too and I think their attendances will be interesting to see this season. Committed hardcore fans will understand the club seeking added revenue but floating and fair weather fans will be turned off unless they're flying high.

Inflation doesn't justify a sudden 33% increase in 4 months. If it was a Euro or 2, the difference would be negligible, but Galway's admission prices were only €10 until last season, now they've gone up to €20. Though we had the most expensive prices in the lower division 2 years ago, we haven't raised ticket prices since 2004. But I reckon once a few clubs do it, we may follow, driving more people away from our gate, especially for unfashionable games.

Dundalk charging €12 for the stand or €8 for the terrace for friendlies.
Season ticket holders get free entrance to the four friendlies (Drogs, Pats, Bray, Rovers), along with the League Cup games.

Like Holidaysong said, it says on the season ticket that it covers League Cup games.
Season Tickets usually get you into league cup games as well- but I think the home club has to pay the portion of the entry fee that the away side would otherwise pay. I think in a lot of cases though that the visiting club may waive this if the number of season ticket holders isn't that high.
Galway United charged €15 last season.
This season the new stand will be for Gold ,Corporate , Adult, Concession & Terry's Tigers Season Tickets Plus Sponsors,Visiting Officials and guests. Whatever Seats are left in the new stand will be €25.
Its €20/€10/€5 for all other parts of the ground including the old stand.

Estimated attendences tend to be fairly low when the gate is split :)

Drogs season tickets now cover League only. They previously covered LC but with the new shared gate for that competition they cannot cover the LC anymore.

That's all well and good until you try and attract new fans to come along to a few games and then hit them with that fee. Frankly if I were a prospective Galway fan there wouldn't be a snowballs chance in hell of me stumping up that type of cash

I think charging 20euro is the absolute maximum the EL can go to now for the next number of years. Beyond that would be a killer. It's all fine and well for those of us who consider ourselves hardcore supporters but casual supporters will find 20E a bit steep to say the least.

i agree 20 is insane - especially if your trying to gather more randomers
the idea that the 20 will push people into buy a season ticket is madness imo
the 20 quid MIGHT push a fairly regular goer into the season ticket - they will be turning up anyway
but the fair weathers put off by the friendly prices - might even be put off heading up for a competitive league game now
think it will/has backfired
Corby if you spent more time in Terryland rather than typing on here and surmising what people are doing you might actually see whats happening. There were 250 plus at the game on friday night and it wasnt the ticket prices that kept peope away it was the monsoon that hit Galway at 6pm until 8.30.
I remember us getting 50 plus at a friendly in Terryland on a bright summers day and it was £2 in ;)

its a very worn argument of yours gufct - aiming at my non attendance as the winning of the argument - the question is :
how many people actually bought a season ticket because 2 home friendlies equaling €40 now make the season ticket look better value at €250
the theory behind the pricing is to encourage season ticket purchases did it work is simply what im asking
not asking about attendance or my lack of on friday night

Dont understand why any 'supporter' of a local club would complain about prices, like it or not its a source of income prior to the season, if supporters want to win trophies then money is required, even in our humble LOI !!!

Because that's a very short sighted view of it. It's not just about the supporters, it's about the potential supporters. If you alienate potential supporters by, say, charging E20 for a pre-season friendly, that means fewer supporters in the future to give the money towards what you've just described.

You can't be paying €20 for a friendly. These games are used to get match fitness and try out some fringe players. As a result the game can be very disjointed. I presume kids are half price, so that would cost me €40 (plus burgers etc) for my lot, I don't think so.
Use these games to try and get new people to the ground and increase the fan base. Youths have 4 home friendlies this month, UCD, St. Pats, Cork and Rovers. A great line up and it's going to be good craic. However, if we charged what is being talked about here, then February would cost me €160 on top of what I have paid for season tickets
