Great post TP, hard to disagree with any of it.

While I'd disagree on substantial portions of it I entirely empathise on the issue of the tabloids (in particular -by no means exclusively) treatment of Stan, their intrusions, violations of privacy, general meddling etc... and I echo the sentiment that these clowns do not represent or in any way speak for me or my interests.
In that respect, I fear we are indeed drifting toward a situation similar to the English one where this particular section of the media believe they hold the national team in trust for the people and therefore have a right to exert influence over it's affairs.

Staunton speaking about new Irish manager "in the studio" on SSN "shortly" - should be compelling:)
I can't wait to hear the **** he comes out with!

He has just added
"I think it worked out quite well"
"the players were enthusiastic and unfit players were ringing me asking to be included in squads" (like in the USA eh?)
How stupid is that man? How stupid does he think we are?
Just say the job was too hard for a rookie, I made mistakes but did some good things too and I look forward to the next challenge.

He had players "ringin me up wanting to come into squads even though they weren't fit, so we must have been doin' somethin right"
Is he taking the ****? Maybe Alan O Brien?

At least he had the balls to answer a few questions on t.v. only..... 102 days after being sacked.
methinks however he's trying to put his name out there so he may have a furure in management. I heard the other day he applied for the Southampton job?

The man is an imbecile, and a joke. No football club would ever touch him unless he did a Roddy and promised to bring in investors. That lost one in twelve games line shows what a fool Staunton is, how people can still defend him I don't know.

"What's his knowledge of the Irish players? How well does he know how the Irish players feel and what they're all about because I think we are a little bit different."

Perhaps defend wasn't the right choice of word, but I've no time for the "well he's a lovely guy and did his best but it wasn't up to it" arguments.

In a way I felt sorry for him having been thrown to the wolves by Delaney but having seen his display on TV yesterday I now feel nothing but rage.
Rage at Delaney for giving the man the job. Staunton came across yesterday as a mentally subnormal twit with no grasp on reality whatsoever. Even his live match analysis was cringeworthy. How on earth could Delaney have thought he could engineer a successful campaign and be trusted with the development of future players?
Rage towards Staunton for having the nerve to suggest his dismissal was unfair and that things were going in the right direction. It's not even deluded, it's an outright lie and it's an insult to each and every one of us, especially the majority who were fair and measured in any criticism of his tenure.
Stuff his 100 caps, I have nothing but antipathy for him.

Wrong again, looks like he will asst to Gary Mac at Leeds. Wonders never cease. I hope it works out for him, he deserves it after all the cr*p he has had to put up with recently.

Can't believe that appointment at Leeds, played with McAllister at Liverpool and for him at Coventry but it's still crazy to me, can see it ending in tears....

I think most people here would hope that he can get the experience he needs to make his managerial career a success.
Good luck Stan.

Whats all this about an interview on the telly?
Was it Brian Kerr-esque with Stan wallowing in self pity?
Stuttgart88
04/02/2008, 11:09 AM
It was worse than self pity, it was just outright deluded and at times outright lies.
“I lost my job for losing one game in twelve”
“Things were getting better towards the end”
“I had injured players ringing me asking to be in squads so I must have been doing something right”
“Hopefully the new guy can finish off what I started”.

does he really? everything that went wrong for Ireland was self-inflicted. Added to that his complete and utter ability to admit any mistakes in hindsight means that I have absolutely no pity for the man whatsoever...
Strange appointment by Leeds imho but maybe Stan has finally found his level (again!)

I saw the interview and rather than self-pitying, he was more defiant (though not aggressively so). The guy's still totally in denial. Which is odd, really, since with his knowing that he had the Leeds job lined up, he could have relented a bit, along the lines of "Well it didn't really work out, and I made some mistakes, but that was because it was too soon; I'm confident I'll quickly get back into football and I'll be all the better for the experience"
Anyhow, it explains why he was so "chipper".

Leeds are set to name Steve Staunton as assistant manager to Gary McAllister.
The former Republic of Ireland boss will meet the Leeds squad at Thorp Arch on Monday with a view to joining the club until the end of the season.
Staunton, who won 102 international caps for the Republic, has previously worked with McAllister at Coventry. He was appointed as Republic coach in January 2006, but left his role the following October after an unsuccessful Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.

Kevin Blackwell deserves no small amount of credit for what he managed to do at Leeds. Most people out there haven't a clue, not a friggin clue, of the conditions he worked under ...and got them to a play-off final doing it.
No silk purse/sows ear analogy does justice to it. Roy Keanes achievement in getting Sunderland up despite giving everyone else a five match head start and Billy Davies taking a terrible Derby team up aren't a patch on what Blackwell managed.

Overall* I agree with that. It was clear, in particular, that Bates kept Blackwell in position whilst he cleared the decks and slashed costs, effectively by forcing Blackwell to sell all the high earners and bring in cheap replacements.
And the moment Bates had got the Shareholders' Register the way he wanted it, flogged off any remaining saleable assets and walked away from the outstanding debts (via Administration), he got rid of Blackwell and brought in Denis Wise. Bates is Godfather to Wise's children.
* - I say "overall", since Blackwell also played David Healy on the right wing half the time. Now I'm not claiming Healy is necessarily top class, but if he wasn't the best finisher available to Leeds at Championship level, then I'm a monkey's uncle. Even Denis Wise was forced to admit he'd initially got it wrong about Healy, by which time Healy was already off.

i was grimmacing when he was criticizing trapattoni's language/culture barrier and he said "we're irish and we're a little bit different." looking at his muppety head saying it i doubt anyone else watching around the world could've come to any other conclusion.
I would be pleased for Stan if he gets the job at leeds.
sincerly hope he does well. He did poorly as a manager with us but he's a decent bloke who was a great servant to Ireland. Best of luck with the job stan
Did anyone read what Stan said on the sun today about trapattoni not knowing the players. What is this joker on about. At least he knows what he is talking about. Seriously Trapattoni is by far and away the best man mentioned for the job and this clown comes up with this rubbish. He may have been a great player for Ireland but is completely oblitering any good feeling I had about him with this kind of muck over the last few months!!
