I'd argue that your OT there probably means 'on-topic' rather than 'off' but I'll humour you anyway. I'm pretty sure that his daughter is a member of the FAI Council.

Out of any club, Kilkenny do not deserve this at all. Its been run impeccably on a shoestring budget all down through the years. €50k is nothing in fairness compared to alot of other clubs fiascos down through the year.
Just want to say that right about now would be a good time to buy this book (http://foot.ie/showpost.php?p=594997&postcount=15).
How do yuo order it Aface did you e-mail his newspaper company down in Kilkenny?. Its one book I keep meaning to get.

Often wondered how Kilkenny survived season after season..Any time I was at a match there in the last few seasons, the most home fans amounted to about 50 at the most.Jim Rattigan deserves a sainthood for keeping the club going against all the odds..Hope things work out for him..

I know some people who have bought it through the club, and its available through a newsagent in the City. After that i dont know but if there were people interested in it then i wouldn't mind calling up and picking up a few copies.

Must get it myself. Meant to be a good read and I'm sure it illustrates the struggles that he has gone through to keep the club going.

It's been hard to support City the last few years when the team has been such a shambles for all the good work done off the pitch. City will never get a big following given hurling place in the summer but for those that do go, too often the players have been so far below a repectable standard so it's hard to keep coming each week. We don't expect to challenging at the top of the table but a competitive side is all we'd ask for each week to boost interest in City, Pat Scully's team is the only one to offer this in the last few years.
I don't want to harsh on City because it wouldn't be right without them in the league, especially after the great memories most notable in the 96/97 campaign when we unbeaten at home for the season, a year that included Richie Hale going on a scoring blitz when the Hale-Bopp comet was in the sky (8 goals in 5 games I think), a year that gave us so many legends, but things had to come to a head as continuing as we have done for the last few years isn't viable.
hard on the players to perform when expected to drive all the way to donegal and play a match....

That's true of all clubs & players but Cobh have shown how it can be done on a smaller set-up & we have had some success in the past(our 2 promotions were hardly bankrolled).
My only complaint with City is too often the playing side has taken a back seat to developing a nice ground, how would any of you feel if your side had finished bottom of the table 4 years out of the last 5 or started the last game of the season with a defender in goal?
Even without the current problems in running the club, the whole club needs a change of emphasis because I cannot see how a Kilkenny side of the last few seasons would beat Sporting Fingal come end of next season.
How much does it cost to run a 1st Division club for the year? What kind of budgets do Monaghan, Wexford, Kildare, Limerick, etc. operate on? Does anyone have a rough idea/ball park figure?

€1,500 - €2,500 per week wages anyways...

Hmm. There is that web-bought club in London (Ebbfleet?). Is Kilkenny City a possible one for a foot.ie take over? In that case, I reckon the first thing is to fix the name (TOWN not city), then, as long as they lose the four games this year to the Blues, and injure our rivals, I'll be happy enough whatever the rest of ye want to do with them...
That would be class if it were possible.. anyone come up with a ball park annual per person figure if lets say 500 people got involved? total fantasy of course - nobody get too outraged at the impracticalities!
Interesting from a business point of view.. people here often talk or bemoan the promotional activities of various clubs, could enough ideas come from here to turn the club into a profit making organisation?
a bout of salmonella for the hurling team at an early stage in the all irelands may be a good start

The thing is, Cobh have alot of people involved in the club aside from the first team. Their underage/junior teams have always done well. Maybe more people involved in junior clubs in Kilkenny should get involved and help out.
The actual true is that there has been an amazing effort done at City over a long long time. If more people go on board then you would see the advances being made that you are talking about.

There definitely is a problem between junior football in Kilkenny & Kilkenny City. The Junior league is strong enough as shown in the Oscar Traynor trophy every season but these players do not come through to City as they consider the top local clubs stronger. Young local players are often more likely to join Waterford than Kilkenny because they have seen how badly run they have been on the pitch the last few seasons.
City probably need to enter sides in the underage leagues so kids can start to associate with the club & progress through the ranks but given the financial situation this probably is not feasible

I think its unfair to lay all the blame on the playing side...forxample I've seen city play quite a lot over the last few seasons and never have I seen players from a club kitted out so badly, by that I mean drill tops, tracksuits etc. How can this be possible in a semi-professional set-up? Having said that I admire the club greatly and think the main cause of the malaise is the negative attitude of junior clubs towards their EL team. Up here that doesn't seem to be an issue....

A couple of years ago, the Star printed clubs' turnover figures as per UEFA Licencing. Kilkenny and Limerick were around E80k for the year. That was the year Limerick were in a complete mess (relatively speaking of course), so they'd have increased a good bit since. There was a bit of a gap to the next team up - about E250k, I think.

Bad timing for Kilkenny so.
This highlights the need for EVERY club to get involved at community level and contribute to the social environment. Clubs will not exist on their own, they need support from the wider area and need to give back even more to that area. Not saying Kilkenny are guilty of not doing this but its definitely the way to go for all eL clubs.

while we're at it could some start a collection for bohs, they'll be needing it soon enough!
I don't think the heart is in the KK people to support their own local club.
If the Wexford Hurlers were able to win as many All-Ireland titles as Kilkenny, I sure the Youths would suffer too as you'd all be too busy dancing at the crossroads to go watch soccer matches!!
There are people who do support their local club & volunteer to help out whenever they can. However we do need more support - vocally, physically & financially but its hard when the Hurlers are winning so consistantly and City are finishing bottom of the league year after year.:(

While I am all in favour of a foot.ie whip round, what exactly is the current state of play. Rhatigan is stepping down his financial input, but what is the score with the team: Is there a squad? What is the manager situation? Has training been scheduled yet? Is the license gettable? Is there someone there with a long term strategy for the future yet? And if not, is there someone who could be drafted in to do so?
If I had the money to invest in a football business, these are the questions I would ask. If I were to make a financial contribution, it would ultimately be very small; however it would be a lot for me, especially seeing the fiscal distress that the Blues seem annually to visit. I would like to help Kilkenny, as I have many fine memories of games there, but I do not want to throw cash down the drain that might help a poor struggling club that would could survive - e.g. the Lims, Athlone, Bohs;) - or, as is usually the case, and top of my brief, the Blues.
I really hope that the Cats survive, and are not replaced off the field. They are terribly nice people, and kindly help the rest of us from having to finish bottom any given year - good job they ditched that horrible Scully chap - he simply did not play the game!

Amlj, you are just confirming my point. For whatever reason, I don't think there is enough support for Kilkenny City Football Club. As for the GAA references in your reply, I proudly hold a record of having never seen or been to a GAA game in my 45 years.
I have been to LOI matches since I was 10 and growing up in Dublin (I think 0-0 was a comulpsory score back then). I went to all the internationals in Dalymount and later Landsdowne Rd when you could easily buy a ticket at the gate. I have travelled the SE with my sons playing schoolboy football in all weathers. In short, if KK were my team, I'd be there even if they were bottom and I don't think there are enough of my type in your area. This is a pity for true fans of the game, which I'm presuming you are

I wasn't disagreeing with you oldyouth. There is a serious lack of support or even a lack of willingness to support soccer in this county from alot of people, which all soccer teams face in this country. There are other uderlining factors which causes this KK, other than GAA as other big GAA counties (in both Hurling & Gaelic) Cork, Galway, Waterford, Wexford have very good followings in soccer by comparison. (albeit maybe due to better catchment as all 4 have much bigger populations, but still)
There is from what I sense some kind of mental thing, particularly between some sections within the local district league & the LOI team in the county that the junior soccer is of a better standard & therefore the better players dont/wont make the step up to senior and from what I've heard, I believe its a similar situation in Limerick (plus they've strong GAA & Rugby folowing to compete with).
I could be totally wrong & I sure I'll be told otherwise if I am, but that is my opinion from my expierence & I'm know it doesn't apply everwhere, but in sections it does.
