I've decided on going to Venezuela this year - I think I have someone to put me up and put up with me in Caracas, so why not.

Any advice, experience, or general tall tales to share?

Two mates of mine have been. Its a dangerous enough place for gringos. Lots of muggings etc. I suppose though if you have a mate there you'll be alright.

I've heard it's dodgy for being mugged etc but that's par for the course in South America. Keep your head down and act sensible and you'll be grand. Let us know what the communist utopia is really like!

I have heard its well dodgy and corrupt as well, i have a mate for Venezuela and see had to pay to pass her leaving cert equivalent no matter how much study she did or what results she got. Do your homework well in advance, try the lonely planet forums and see what other people have found out about it.

from the advice your getting i think your friend will be getting a ''aaahh sorry <insert name>, but im really stuck up with work for a the next few yrs here'' :D

It actually wouldn't be too bad if you visited other countries first so you're not so green once you get there. I know of a bunch of lads that went there climbing and got on grand, but there were up in the mountains all the time away from the crime :p

Or when he sends another message just say " Venezuala....Christ NO!....I thought you said Venice and we'll have a whale of a time":D
