I want as many opinions as possible on this. We all have players who we really admire, they may not be playing at the top level or they could be part of the elite of world soccer past and present.
My personal favourites.

Read the first post again.
I realise the thread is about heroes, rather than great players, but your post reads as almost a "who's who" of the greatest Irish players ever. I did realise you hadn't included him, my post was a casual way to inquire, given his performances for Ireland, why he wasn't there, if you felt like humouring me. You clearly didn't feel like humouring me.

Erik Thorstvedt,
Cafu, Ronald Koeman, Kevin Moran, Paulo Maldini
Brian Laudrup, Michael Laudrup, Gazza, Damien Duff,
Marco Van Basten and Gary Lineker.
Out of the above, Van Basten is the player I'd admire most.

Actually, substitute Frank O'Neill for Paulo di Canio. Probably my all time favourite player. Never failed to beat the full back. Just stood on the terraces at Milltown in awe as Frank would show the fullback the ball and then beat him like clock work.

Roberto Carlos is the sneakiest player of all time.
If anyone watches him for any single match they'd understand.
He leaves sneaky trailing legs and by the time the player gets up he's all smiles and patting them on the back.
One of the few players I genuinely disdain.

1. Bruce Grobelaar - Eccentric but a quality keeper.
2. Cafu - Has had no equal as a RB for over a decade
3. Luis Enrique - Could play anywhere and my no. 1 all-time favourite. Sorry to have to put you in at LB Luis :o
4. Sami Hyypia - Bargain from Willem II. Imperious for years.
5. Paul McGrath - Needs no explanation :ball:
6. Josep Guardiola - Gave the best exhibition of passing I've seen from anyone when Barca beat Bilbao 7-0 in 2001.
7. Peter Ndlovu - Last visiting player to score a hat-trick at Anfield. Should have played at a higher level.
8. Steven Gerrard - Heartbeat of Liverpool.
9. Davor Suker - A wand of a left peg. Born goalscorer. Leaving Schmeichel rooted at Hillsborough in Euro '96 stands out!
10. Ronaldo - At his peak was unstoppable. Best goalscorer I've seen.
11. John Barnes - Wing wizard. Witnessed his off-field skills at fairly close quarters also - some performer!!
12. Dietmar Hamann - Turned the tide in Istanbul :)
13 John Aldridge - Top man and top player.
14. Robbie Fowler - Bluenose turned one of Liverpool's best.
15. Paul McNally - Honourable mention for one of ELs gentlemen. Lucky enough to have played alongside him and sad he had to retire early.
16. Francesco Totti - Leader with flair. Lots of theatrics at times but not appreciated enough as a footballer.

What Campos lacks in height, he makes up in colourful shirts :D
I wasn't really going for the best players I've ever seen, just heroes in my eyes. I don't really have any goalkeepers as heroes, hence Campos.
I wouldn't consider Horgan or Murray as "heroes" either, but I couldn't think of anyone else.
