Even Delaney knows what is best for Delaney, that is to have a manager who will have success with the team.
Sadly, what Delaney wants and what Delaney does are often on two very seperate plateaus. Delaney 'wanted' Staunton until 2010, and reiterated this pretty much up to Kick off against Cyprus in Croker. (I firmly believe that even a moderate victory over the Cypriots and not losing to Wales would have allowed Delaney to retain Stan, against the nations wishes) However, it was not to be, and 4 year plan or no 4 year plan, G'luck Stan. Thank God.
Similarly, Delaney wanted no part of the interview process, and stated categorically that he wanted no contact with the managerial candidates in relation to the Ireland job.
He stated that categorically mere days before contacting Paul Jewell in relation to the Ireland job.
He probably does indeed want who he believes to be the best manager in place for the job, for some of the same reasons we do, but mainly, as pointed out in your post above, cos it would get people off his back.
My fear is tht he has involved himself so deeply in the affairs of the nation that he has begun to believe he IS Irish football, and is now unable to control himself. Perhaps it's a Mussolini complex, where he truly does believe the hype fed to him (otherwise known as the "Booo-urns" syndrome), or perhaps it's some kind of Matt Talbot fetish, where he knows his past actions mucked things up so badly that he'll wear the skin off his own hands working to make things right.
Either way, having gotten away with interfering for so long, he's seemingly no longer able to keep his nose out of team affairs, and I think any single minded manager, if impeded by this man, would simply floor him with a decent left, and promptly quit.
I dont think salary is the problem, I think John Delaney is.
