Even Delaney knows what is best for Delaney, that is to have a manager who will have success with the team.

Sadly, what Delaney wants and what Delaney does are often on two very seperate plateaus. Delaney 'wanted' Staunton until 2010, and reiterated this pretty much up to Kick off against Cyprus in Croker. (I firmly believe that even a moderate victory over the Cypriots and not losing to Wales would have allowed Delaney to retain Stan, against the nations wishes) However, it was not to be, and 4 year plan or no 4 year plan, G'luck Stan. Thank God.

Similarly, Delaney wanted no part of the interview process, and stated categorically that he wanted no contact with the managerial candidates in relation to the Ireland job.

He stated that categorically mere days before contacting Paul Jewell in relation to the Ireland job.

He probably does indeed want who he believes to be the best manager in place for the job, for some of the same reasons we do, but mainly, as pointed out in your post above, cos it would get people off his back.

My fear is tht he has involved himself so deeply in the affairs of the nation that he has begun to believe he IS Irish football, and is now unable to control himself. Perhaps it's a Mussolini complex, where he truly does believe the hype fed to him (otherwise known as the "Booo-urns" syndrome), or perhaps it's some kind of Matt Talbot fetish, where he knows his past actions mucked things up so badly that he'll wear the skin off his own hands working to make things right.

Either way, having gotten away with interfering for so long, he's seemingly no longer able to keep his nose out of team affairs, and I think any single minded manager, if impeded by this man, would simply floor him with a decent left, and promptly quit.

I dont think salary is the problem, I think John Delaney is.

The FAI are willing to pay twice as much money as the Scots for the next manager. They don't necessarily need to pay more though as pretty much all their candidates are Scottish.

It has been reported that the FAI are willing to pay up to a million. Are those reports an accurate reflection of FAI intent re bargaining policy or just some wishful figures being bandied about?

I read €1m - 1.5m was what they're willing to pay.

Houllier will get the Irish job, I have faith in Givens and Howe to make a proper evaluation and conclude that Houllier checks all the boxes.

Hodgson will not want the job, Venables is not suitable and will always be looking elsewhere.

didnt houllier just get appointed as france technical director? think he is off the list then.

i think venebles will get the job and god help us if he does. i think i would actually cry with frustration if it happens! hodgson seems to be the man who should get it... is he actually interested?

Howard Kendall (remember him?) has now declared his interest in the job, with peter beardsley as his assistant. (from breakingnews.ie)

"No less an influential figure as Sir Bobby Robson has championed Houllier as the ideal candidate to succeed Steve McClaren, but the former Liverpool coach believes that England should look elsewhere for their saviour."

Should Bobby not be persuading Houllier of the benifits of the Ireland job, seeing as we pay his wages?

Didn't Robson's contract expire in November?

My 20 euro are on Ari Haan @ 25/1.

I think, apart from anything else the ground swell of public opinion against Venables is overwhelming and even the FAI won't risk another backlash.

Brady/O'Leary, neither is ideal nor top drawer managers. The only thing they have going is they are experienced ex Irish intenationals but with no international manangement experience.

Houllier, more likely to have a greater impact in role of Director of Football or some strategic role rather than hands-on, bit can't see him leaving French job for a similar role in Ireland.

Hodgson is a dark horse but his reported role as one of England's kingmakers makes you wonder if he has other interests lined up.

I would love to see McCarthy back but it is not going to happen. Wouldn't mind Souness with someone like Hughton, but too controversial.

As for all these other has beens or wannabees, waste of time.

Time to try something different, lets go continental.

I can see O'Leary getting the job. He's been quiet lately (unlike El Tel and, Lord have mercy, Howard Kendall) and it will give Delaney the opportunity to gather a press conference and say 'We have a manager with Premier League experience, who has managed a team in the Champions League semi-finals, and who is Irish. A world class management team!'

Even Delaney must know the extent of public feeling against Venables, he's not smart enough to get Hodgson, Houllier is out of the question now, Kendall is a non-starter (please God)...from his point of view, the options are running out. If Delaney gets O'Leary in, and he fails, he can say to the press 'I got a manager with top class experience and he let us down' whereas if he succeeds he can claim the credit for the appointment. Maybe the die-hard fans, like on here, will disagree, but the public will buy it, and that makes it win-win for Delaney. And as we all know, that is all that matters.

I fear we are in the same position Aston Villa were when they appointed him. An unpopular board with few options appointing a desperate O'Leary with few options.

Some people have mentioned Allardyce. Sam hasn't a hope , because ex LOI managers don't figure on the FAI radar since they sacked Kerr. SO that's Lawrie Sanchez, Willie McStay, Stephen Kenny and Steve Cotterill out of the race so it is . :D
