So often players get labeled as over rated etc
Players like Beckham Figo Totti have had this tag for years. In many cases, Figo's especially is is completely unwarranted, A fabulous footballer. Totti also, despite what Eamo and the boys think is a bloody good player and Becks can be very good also. They are funny cases as some people over rate them and some chronically under rate them.
So who, current or recent past do you see as being GENUINELY over rated and to make in interesting also under rated players.

Over rated....Rio. All on his own. Savagely over rated.
Under rated - Tim Cahill
Over rated - Damien Duff, always was, good player no doubt, world class...no
Under rated - Shay Given - Second best keeper in england if not the world
Over rated - Ryan Giggs , and has been for some time
Under rated - Clarence Seedorf. Many will tell u he is a plodder , some plodder!

I will assume you are referring to Rio Ferdinand ,

On the contrary to be over-rated I believe due to the amount of slagging he receives usually on here , he is really under rated . A fine defender who's perceived (probably rightly) repuatation as being a right **** has blurred some peoples views on him as a footballer.

I admired Steven Naismith when he was at Kilmarnock. I thought he was a very good player. I don't think he's getting enough of a chance at Rangers, even though he did really well to set up a goal against Falkirk the other week.

Daniel Cousin was a top striker in France and that's why I rate him highly.

I dislike both Old Firm clubs equally.

Gustavo I know what you mean. I used to say that about Beckham.
Beckham was not the world class player some of them across the pond would have us believe, how ever he was a bloody good footballer and way better than some here would have you believe. He would still get in most teams but he was never in the Zidane class.
Rio, nothing to do with his personality, i wouldnt care less what kinda geezer he was, I just think he is a very ordinary footballer.
I would honestly rate Vidic, Carra, a fit Woodgate, Terry, Dunne, Lescott, Carvalhio and Toure ahead of him. And probably Ledley King too

What are you views on Beckham Figo and Totti lads?

Beckham out wide with the ball at his feet is lethal and a half second to see who is available in the box he has great stamina. Outerwise he lacks pace, Intelligence never was world class but good none the less.
Figo at Barcelona was spectacular he just beat people for fun. When he went to Real he kept it going for a year or two only. Great pace intelligence.
Totti is a nice player behind the front one-two only I think he stayed at Roma to long.

What are you views on Beckham Figo and Totti lads?

I always thought that in the early days that Figo was over-rated. It was Rui Costa who pulled the strings. He destroyed us in Lisbon in 95. At Euro 2000 Figo was given MOTM against England when it was Rui Costa who destroyed them. EVen Jaio Pinto did more than Figo. Having said that Figo did come into his own after that and has been briliant for Inter since handing back his Galactico membership card.

Totti is an imposter IMO. No where near as good as the likes of Baggio. Its a Roman think, they had the same affection for Giannini.

We know what Beckhams good and bad points are. The good outweigh the bad. A team would have to be built around him ala Riquelme. But this would not happen with English teams.

Thats my spoke anyway.

Underrated: The rest of that Liverpool midfield tbh.

Overrated: Terry, Ronaldo (The Portugese one), Ferdinand, Carrick, Lampard, Rooney (Assuming anyone still rates him)

Literally dozens more I might go through later.

Also a special mention to the vast majority of the Irish squad and anyone in a Celtic shirt who has ever beaten a player :)

he's the only player I forgot to include. Except I was going to have him as overrated. Fecking waster who has never come close to performing well in big games.

Overrated : Ronaldinho (lazy, overweight, has the talent to be much better), Puyol (get a haircut!), Richard Dunne (the defender that has no ball control)

Underrated : Iniesta (outstanding midget of a player), Robinho (beginning to show his class), Zlatan Ibra. (world-class).

Riquelme is an unbelievable player. His goalscoring and assist record should speak for themselves.
What do you expect him to do ?? Take on defences ala Kaka or Messi ??
He's a great passer of the ball and there is no better set piece taker...

What big games are you talking about ??Arsenal in the Champions League is the only one I can think of...You have to remember he played for a Villarreal team that were frequently in the bottom half of La Liga before he came...

He was great at the World Cup...so you can't be talking about Argentina...

And they were bottom half of La Liga before Diego Forlan came too

He was great at the World Cup...so you can't be talking about Argentina...
He was great in the meaningless group stages, and completely missing when they were knocked out.

He failed hugely at Barcelona as he couldn't handle the pressure. He was sacked by Villareal for not being bothered. He wasn't picked for Argentina for years.

An undoubted talent certainly. On his day he's as good as they get. But he'll never perform consistently well for a top european side and therefore can't be classed as a world great.

mr miyagi
30/11/2007, 1:41 PM
Argentina were knocked out in penalties by Germany...Riquelme wasn't even on the pitch at that stage...but he did supply the cross for Argentina's goal.
And btw...I wouldn't call the group stages meaningless when they were in a group with Holland, Serbia & Montenegro and Ivory Coast

He failed at Barcelona because he was rarely played, and when he was it was as a winger...

ifk101
30/11/2007, 1:59 PM
Riquelme needs to be "the big fish in a small pool" to play well - he needs to feel secure that he's the team's "main man".

He's a talented player but, as Dodge said, when the pressure is on he invariably goes missing.

he played 30 league games in his only season there.

And why wasn't he on the pitch when they were knocked out? because he was anonymous when he was there...

The pressure of having his brother kidnapped back in Argentina and having to negoiate with the kidnappers himself. Also Van Gaal said that he was a political signing and didn't want him. He wasted him on the wing. Who knows what would have happened had he not had those problems.

I don't think it's a case of going missing. Like all players of his type, there's not a lot he can do if his team haven't got the ball. When Argentina have the better of the game he'll usually be the centre of everything.

Ledley King would be one of the most overrated players I can think of.

Why does everyone think the Frank Lampard is so overrated???...He's got 40 goals in the last two seasons for Chelsea alone ,and 7 already this season, ....FROM MIDFIELD...most strikers would be happy with that return...He's also a brilliant passer of the ball and contributes loads of assists....He's not great for England, but his performances for Chelsea are always good...

Most underrated player in the world is Iniesta....FACT :)

That's because of Chelsea's style of play. Hoof it up to Drogaba, he knocks it down, bang back of the net. Also have you seen his statistics for shots off target- highest in the league usually. If you take as many shots as him you bound to score some. He'd be lost in a team like Arsenal or Barca.
