The central basis for hiring Haan is that it would be a break with the past and offer a fresh approach to a qualifying tournament. I have to agree that bringing in another English manager in the mould of Venables is simply not going to work. We have tried it already, but we have been on a downward slope ever since. At least Haan would be a breath of fresh air and represent some new thinking, as would Hodgson to a lesser extent. But Haan's track record is hard to top, and certainly beats that of Venables. Given that we have tried the traditional approach (McCarthy, Kerr, Stan), why not go for broke and try something else. It is not as if we have anything to lose...we are fodder for the likes of Cyprus after all!!

has he done anything since the 80s? kevin keegan was playing for him during his managerial high point!!
when china he couldnt get out of his second round group containing kuwait, hong kong and malaysia!
and ireland have never gone down the traditional approach, which is appointing a successful manager:
McCarthy - managed in the first division, sign him up!
Kerr - underage manager
Stan - cone layer at walsallcan we not just appoint someone whos qualified a team for a major championships or won a few trophys within at least the last 10 years?

Thanks for getting that posted up, Tets.
Haan speaks respectfully about Venables, though I canīt help reading between his lines.
Haan does a Steve Job's approach, Think Different. Time to break the Big Brother mould.
Fanning in his other article says that 'Haan's time in management has been curious and his appointment would throw Irish football into a greater period of doubt.'
I suppose that's a fair enough comment, there is a risk factor.
But better the devil we don't know than the devil we do know.

Im worried about the fact that he has never stayed with a team for too long.If he was appointed now then would he leave before the World Cup in 2010? Thats still three years away!

As Tets said elsewhere, Arie Haan's biggest plus factor is that he's not Terry Venables!

I dont know, its a reasonably high profile job in europe, and as he said, he wants to be in europe. If he is genuine about what he says in the sunday sh1tewipe above, then he would be ideal. I like the idea of a dutchman (is martin Jol stil in the frame/was he ever?) in charge and I think it would be the change that may turn things around. If we are to have a chance of qualifying a very fresh approach is needed - he'd get my vote anyways.

Can't believe that, club experience in Europe and international football. Interest in managing Ireland. As all the rumoured managers find jobs, I get more and more despondant. We need a definite managerial candidate that the fans can get behind and soon.

He has found his correct level there. We need to make sure we dont get our heads turned by overseas managers like Haan and Troussier. Hodgson, Houllier and O'Leary are my top 3.

How are Hodgson and Houllier not overseas managers?!

Arie Haan has a better chance of getting somewhere with Albania than he would have with our dis-organised rabble. Should be easier to knock them into a decent team.

Am glad he didn't figure in the Ireland shakeup - his record across Europe isn't exactly stellar, he seemingly has trouble with staying in one job for an extended period of time & that whole palava with his agent just seemed more mercenary than necessary. A dutch manager would be nice, but not any old idiot with a pair of clogs :)

Because they've managed in England, silly. And, as everyone knows, England is not overseas.

my point was that just because someone is from another country doesnt mean they are good managers. I'd apply this to Paul Jewell too

There is another good Dutch manager with a similar name who is very interested in the job, he is willing
to bend over backwards to show his credentials to the FAI, he's called Arie Harse.
The FAI are looking into it.

We have spent almost 900 years as a nation trying to prove the English are foreigners.... so they f**kin well are overseas. What's that piece of water between us called? The Irish Sea

The Dutch have a great reputation for being arrogant egomaniacs. Which is why they have never won the World Cup :D

Tip for you, you'll find sarcasm under "S" in the dictionary. Look it up sometime.
