Miah may have to wait a year for rehab treatment

FORMER Irish soccer aceMiah Dennehy could have to wait up to 12 months to receive specialist rehab
treatment following his serious head injuries.
Miah — who was assaulted outside the Fob and Gill in Mayfield on August 17 — has completed treatment
for his injuries at Cork University Hospital. He recently travelled to the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire
for an assessment on his long term injuries.
According to a close family member of the former soccer player for the Republic of Ireland, who is still under care at Cork
University Hospital (CUH), his family was told he would have to join a six to 12-month waiting list for the country’s only rehabilitation clinic.
They were advised to put Miah in a nursing home to receive around-the-clock care. Miah is described as
being stable but completely unaware of his surroundings.

Don't blame the NRH. They are outstanding professional multi disciplinary service providers and I can't speak highly enough of the medics, nurses, physios, occupational and speech therapists.

Like much of the health service they are grossly underfunded, this year by as much as 40% of the budget they requested. AFAIK they've had to close one ward and restrict admissions to others until Jan 08.

They assess each individual prior to admission and prioritise each patient according to their need for services.The budget deficit means they cannot cater for everyone who may need admission. Some will have lower priority for Rehab and accordingly will be further down the list.

I am aware that the consultants are not happy with the current situation but recent events at Portlaoise and cancer service have seen them not as newsworthy. The lack of facilities/budget for intensive rehabilitation from physical or brain damage is not as emotive for the majority of our population.
