I'm not surprised Roy is scouting for players in Ireland, he'll doubtless be delighted to learn that we have a vast selection of strikers who can hit the target from three yards and under more than half the time.

Michael Timlin started for Fulham in their 4-1 win over South China: http://www.fulhamfc.com/MatchAndTeam/MatchCentre/Matches/0708/Friendlies/LiverpoolorWinners.aspx
Timlin got the assist from a corner for the second goal, and was substituted midway through the second half. Interestingly enough he played left midfield.
He's 22 now so this season is make or break for him at Fulham.

Dunno what the f*** kind of formation Keano was playing against Bohs but that role doesn't suit Stokes. And it's not the first time he's played him there. I see Stokes is still fond of the "Left Right Left Shoot" train of thought. Disapointed in him again last night. Would like to see him as part of a conventional 2 man forward line.
Murphy impressed in patches, notably early on. I think he could be a poor mans Berbatov.
McShane excelled.

wat match were u watchin? Murphy a poor man's berbatov??:eek::confused:
McShane best player on the pitch. Sunderland looked very rusty and will have to sharpen up a lot in the next couple of weeks if they're to stay in the premiership.
Stokes was impressive in parts, poor crossing on his left side. unlucky not to score in first half.
Connolly wasn't on long enough to make an impact.
Disappointed Gavin Donoghoe didn't get on.
As for Halford pushing for an england call up as suggested by Keane...Eh no!

Seen more of Murphy than the 60 or so minutes he played last night... He's a good player. Deceptively skillfull for someone of his stature. Fond of the drag backs and 'disguised passes' with his back to goal. He could be more prolific if played as an outright forward more often. He showed a few nice touches early on in the game but faded out. Pity he didn't get hold of that volley. I rate him any way. We'll see.

Poor quality vid of McGeady's goal:
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2na8l_mcgeady-goal-v-parma_sport
Celtic really do have a class midfield if they keep it up, as well as Naka to come back in.
At the other end, Celtic showed some good invention and variation in their attacking play, with some of the passing between Brown, Donati and McGeady a joy to watch.

Shay Given and Stephen Carr started as Newcastle beat Juventus 2-0: http://www.nufc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10278~1080683,00.html
Ranieri on Given:
Sometimes with our last pass, or with the penalty, we were off or (Shay) Given would make a great save.
Given was the best player
Willo Flood started and Noel Hunt was an unused sub as Dundee United beat Kilmarnock 1-0: http://www.dundeeunitedfc.co.uk/index.asp?tm=2&nid=2651&cd=2007

I just got a chance to watch Newcastle v Celtic today. McGeady was the best player on the pitch and is going to come on leaps and bounds with Celtic's new midfield. Last season the short pass was a negative thing to do. The reason for that was because with Lennon and Hartley in midfield they were just not going to create anything. They'd pass it around, pass it back to defence and eventually it would be back to McGeady or Naka. If McGeady or Naka didn't create something than Celtic would be doing well to score. This season McGeady see's the short pass in to Donati and Brown as a positive thing to do. He is much more inclined to take that option and for the first time in a long time he's actually linking up with his fellow midfielders.
It's making him use his brain that little bit more to decide the best option to take. He's no longer an individual who can be measured purely on goals and assists.
Believe it or not this game will actually help him a lot at international level. He forced Shay Given into a great save. His nearest opponent was Stephen Carr and fellow left winger Duff was watching on. These things really do make a big difference to McGeady. That's 2 or 3 really influential Irish players that have seen him at his best. His biggest problem is that he feels he has to prove himself to the Irish. The pressure is enormous and he can't handle it. He'll now be a lot more confident amongst the Irish players. It's just the Irish fans he has to prove himself to. As soon as he gets that out of the way, one big performance for Ireland, and he can finally progress.

You lost alot of 'man points' during the Richie Partridge era!!

I don't think I ever hyped Partridge anywhere near as much I rave about Stokes (the out and out striker) and McShane (the centre half).;) Maybe I wanted Partridge to succeed so much because we've always needed a right winger but did I overrate him? I don't know. Just followed his progress.
Qwerty said to me a while back that I've been "heavily backing" Whelan, McGeady, Potter and Stokes so he'll take my opinion with a pinch of salt. I don't know where that came from. Some people are probably mixing up me following players progress with over hyping them. As I said, Stokes and McShane I rave about. The first time I sang Potter's praises was in the Ecuador game where he was motm by a mile imo.

I agree that one really big performance in green from McGeady will do him the world of good. I have no doubts over his ability in the sense that he could probably show the kid in the 1970s Coca Cola ad a thing or two, but I do have doubts over just how effective he can be for us. I think he is capable of better than we've seen from him to date though.

EB, you are always raving about mcgeady, less so the last year ( maybe because of his performances for ireland and what ppl on here have been saying )but before you were always going on about him!!!! :)
Surely the constant tracking and reports on one or 2 individual players ( over others ), is bias or at least that you rate them higher than others, hence you keep an eye out for them more and track them more?
Btw I enjoy the updates, thats not to say dont keep the reports coming :)

Not at all mate. That's rubbish to be honest. "Less so in the last year" because he hasn't been playing well since October. I tell you exactly how I think he played. I don't overrate him or overhype him. The McGeady of July-October '06 deserved to be hyped up though. In the first 10 games of the season he set up 7 goals, scored a match winner, was man of the match about 7 times and was easily the best player in the SPL. That's how good he was then. Maybe because so many people are yet to see that form from him they think I overrate him. I'd ask them to watch Celtic play on Setanta before dismissing my opinion.
btw, I don't watch much English football. My judgement of Stokes is based on his time at Falkirk. I've actually not seen much of him at all in a Sunderland shirt but I stick by my opinion that he has all the attributes to score many goals up front.
The only time I came close to overrating McGeady was saying he'll be our star player in about 8 years ffs. :D

McGeady is extremely talented. He is still very light and can be easily outmuscled and and he needs to use his head more. But I think he will be an important player for us in the next two or three years.

Unfortunately McGeady needs to prove himself to a lot of the Celtic support and not just Ireland fans, EB.
The pelters he gets from the stands at Parkhead if he loses possession can be outrageous.Personally I'm a massive fan of his, but like you, would be worried about his confidence. I suppose its just the nature of the player he is, that the skilful, creative types tend to get more abuse and are treated with more suspicion than a solid play-the-safe-ball type of player.
I think teams need players like him in the side. Ireland has been suffering too long with solid but unspectacular 'workers' clogging up the midfield - Kilbane, S Reid,Holland, Kinsella, Kav etc etc. I know you need these players too, but its important to have a creative spark or two there, and McGeady provides that. He's been sh!t hot in pre season so far so hopefully this form will continue. I'll be at Parkhead every second week this season so I can keep ye all up to date on his progress. DISCLAIMER : I'm unbelievably biased in favour of Aiden so don't say I didn't warn ya!
Also it'll be interesting to see if he gets any time playing in the 'hole' like against Milan at the San Siro where he had a savage game. I think over time this might be his best position.
On another note, I'm living in Leith and every Hibee I've spoken to is delighted with Alan O Brien so far. Early days I know but at least he'll be playing every week in a good footballing side. Will be interesting to see how he gets on.This time next year I wouldn't be surprised if Hibs were collecting a few pence for him.

Watching Cork vs Sunderland, at the start Cork looked more like a rugby side than football. Only 3 real chances, two fell to Stern John who blasted one over and one wide and Dan Murray also had a chance but put it into the side netting. Miller hasn't done much and when he has it hasn't been to great. Connolly had a 2 minute period where his touch eluded him but besides that has been decent, has been forced to drop into the midfield a bunch due to the fact that the midfielders are doing great.

I believe that McGeady will be a great player for Ireland, possibly our most naturally talented player in the current squad.
McShane is overated though I'd really love to see him come through. He messed up against the Czechs & San Marino yet is forgiven for errors that the likes of McGeady would be crucified for. If (re another thread) Ferdinand declared for us we would see himself & Dunne occupy the CB roles for the next x years, with only a cover role for McShane and the real challenge from O'Dea.
If Potter makes it big, I will have to re-consider my position on Lazarus ...... & Elvis too.

OK, final impressions
Miller: Besides for his great run that lead to his goal he wasn't that great, many of his crosses went awry though besides that he was decent.
Connolly: Same as first, had a 2 minute period where his touch eluded him but besides that has been decent, has been forced to drop into the midfield a bunch due to the fact that the midfielders are doing great. Started off the 2nd with some good passes that could've lead to better thing. Came off for Stokes
Murphy: I sort of tuned out towards the end but looked good enough
Stokes: Looked much better than Saturday, passed more, aside from a horrible miss (the chance wasn't easy but the shot was terrible) he was OK.
O'Donoghue: Didn't really get into the game that much, looked good enough

Theworm, you should watch a few more football matches before you embarrass yourself with comments like that. Cork (know for having a shallow squad in the first place) fielded half a team, sat back because they couldn't be bothered expending energy in a meaningless fixture and laughed off Sunderland's attacks. You have to remember that they're accustomed to playing against top strikers like Nikola Zigic. David Connolly? Stern John? Who the **** are they?
It was only when Cork replaced their (absurdly comfortable) defenders that Sunderland make a breakthrough. For the last twenty minutes Cork were bringing on players I'd never heard of at regular intervals and still didn't look like conceding.

Cork gave a runout to a load of players who I had never heard of; Bohs were the same on Sunday by the end of the match, although they did start with 4 who had played the previous night vs UCD. Games like this are a money making tool for Irish teams and no more; Owen Heary said in an interview on the Bohs website he couldn't be bothered playing in them as the league is what's important to him. Sunderland with their millions of pounds worth of signings playing managed a 1 0 and a 1 1 against 2 second string eircom league teams. Fair enough it was their pre-season, but from attending the first game they look distinctly average, and it can't be their quality of football that is attracting the bandwagon jumpers of Ireland. Anyway, I hope they do well in the premiership because of all their Irish players, but if they do, it shows just how mediocre a league it really is.

And where did I say Sunderland played well? I said a few players were decent (who, compared to the rest of the players on the pitch, were) and some were "good enough" which doesn't exactly imply that they were good.
By the way, this is a typo
bunch due to the fact that the midfielders are doing great.
why would someone drop into the midfield if the midfielders are doing great?
Keano seems to agree with me to some degree

Exactly Misterk.
I thought that Bohs and Corks' second teams looked comfortable with everything Sunderland had to throw at them. I cant' see Sunderland avoiding relegation this season - they looked very poor for a Premiership side.
Of the Irish internationals on show, I personally thought that Colin Healy was the best player on the park last night. Once he gets fully match fit he'll be a massive player for Cork.
I wasn't impressed with Liam Miller - Colin Healy had him in his pocket. He took his goal well but there was very questionable defending leading up to the goal.
Connolly didn't do anything for me.
Murphy came on the pitch when Cork had their U21 team on the field. He still looks like a Waterford United player to me.
Stokes probably has too much expectation on his shoulders but does look dangerous when he has the ball facing the opposition's goal.
I saw that chap O'Donoghue coming on to the field as a sub. The next time I saw him he was shaking somebody's hand at the end. A long way from the first-team at Sunderland.

Miller (took his goal well to be fair) and Connolly were awful last night. Gave the ball away too often or held onto the ball too long. Cannot see them getting much game time this season. Sunderland are going to struggle unless Keano brings in some extra faces. Stokes and Murphy made more of an impact and brought about a bit more urgency but I have to say Cork played very well.

There's no sound on live transmissions for those of us outside of Ireland. Don't know why they have started to do this.

Was at the Cork game last night. Not sure about Stokes, seems more interested in mouthing off than playing. If Keane doesn't straighten him out no one will, but time will tell. Miller is slipping back a little - no longer international quality IMO. Colin Healy was every bit as good I think.

I'd fault Henderson but not McShane. He was the one to react late.
I totally agree on Henderson, but either of them could & should have prevented it.

I blame O'Shea, he passed the ball back to the Czechs before McShane or Henderson got into position, then turned his back while the free was taken quickly, and by the time he realised what was happening, Koller had scored.

I thought Maybury didn't even get a squad number and was being released? Odd that he'd be made captain for the game.

I forgot about Andy Reid until his name was mentioned in another thread. Just looked up Charlton's last pre-season game against Gillingham:
Andy Reid played his part in the opening four goals with a Simon King own goal and a Jerome Thomas penalty completing the nap hand.
...
The keeper was beaten four minutes later with Thomas inches away from giving the visitors the lead.
Reid's slipped through-pass took a slight deflection into the path of the winger as he cut in from the left.
And his cute chip beat former teammate Royce all ends up but sailed fractions over the bar.
...
And he re-emerged with a bandaged head but no sooner had the hosts been restored to their full compliment than they fell behind on 14 minutes.
Reid was the architect again, finding Todorov on the edge of the box and the Bulgarian did supremely well to keep his balance with Simon King's arms all over him.
...
The home keeper stretched out an arm to deny Todorov a minute later after the Bulgarian latched on to another incisive Reid pass, and the visitors continued to press impressively.
...
it was 2-0 on 28 minutes with Ambrose bagging his second.
Inevitably Reid was involved teeing up his midfielder partner to rifle a terrific low drive into the bottom left corner.
...
Offensively the Addicks were looking sharp and they bagged a third six minutes before the break as Todorov converted his first goal in Charlton colours.
The Bulgarian collected possession on the right and fed Reid on the edge of the box.
As quick as a flash the Irishman threaded a piercing pass through the blue rearguard back to Todorov and the striker produced a clinical low finish from an acute angle.
...
The hosts made four changes at the break but it made little difference to the pattern of the game as Charlton struck home a fourth goal two minutes after the restart.
Reid found Thomas on the left with a crossfield pass and the winger made good ground before centring in the direction of Todorov in the middle.
King got there before the Bulgarian but sadly for the hosts could only steer the ball into his own net.
...
Moutaouakil made way for Matt Holland in the 58th minute with Semedo slotting in at right back and the visitors went close again three minutes later with Thomas, for the second time in the game, a whisker away.
Reid found the wideman in an advanced position on the left and as Royce dashed out to meet him Thomas lifted the ball over him but watched the ball bounce just past the upright.

He started the first game against Welling but went off with an achilles injury after 36 minutes and was replaced by another Irishman, Elliot. Weaver has started the other 3 games. Elliot was on the bench against Gillingham.
