Yes!!!...I got their first ep and was blown away by it and thought these boys were going to be huge. They were unlike anything else in Ireland at that time. It was a bit like Led Zep meets indie. God what happened them.

Butterfly in the Baggot, those were the days alright. A mate dragged me to see them claiming they would be "bigger than U2 would ever be even in Bono's wet dreams"
Dogs with no tails, great night out but they were never destinied for stardom

Heh yeah there was a guy in my class at school who was pimping their demo claiming they were going to be huge.

They played a small music festival down here the summer before last, still great to see live. Made many a gag about people only being there to hear 'Butterfly' and 'Dog with No Tail', all of which were true! :D

Following up on the Watercress / Feile question...

:o

Turns out, they could well have played there, 'cos the EP I've got is from 1995, seriously still can't believe that, but it's there in blue and silver.
And Feile was held right from the start of the 1990s, I was at one round about '93 meself I think!

BohsPartisan
02/04/2007, 5:23 PM
yeah think Feile in Thurles was 1990-1994, then in Cork 1995 and a not really propper Feile was held in the point Depot in 96.

Was at 1994 and 95 myself.

Was at Feile 91 myself. A three day event with camping included costing IR£42.50. How's that compare with Oxegen?

I enjoyed a small number of bands but by and large hated it and it has indeed coloured my view of festivals as being the devils work ever since.

Ban the fcuking festivals I say, ban 'em all. Let bands tour properly like they ougth to.

Sorry meant to answer this before. Lionel Ritchie is right, I think, the Feile's were later  erm ...no the feiles were EARLIER. As someone pointed out the last so called feile was 1996. Watercress were a nominee for best new band at the hot press awards in 1998 ...probably meaning they were too late for the feiles.

There was a "last trip to Tipp" in '97, the Prodigy headlined with Manics second on the bill, they had to come off early because it rained so heavily!
One of my mates missed the bus back to Limerick and ended up getting a lift off a bunch of girls who happened to mention Limerick as he was passing!

Sorry Squire, when you said 'a bit later than that' I thought you were talking about the Feiles, not the band. Somebody pointing out 1996 as the last one was after my presumtuously erroneous post.

How about Limerick band Woodstar? Didn't they win a national competition, were feted as Ireland's answer to Mercury Rev, bring out an iffy album that tanked and split up? Open to correction on whether or not they've split

They've split. They'd the second LP recorded and ready to go and couldn't find a deal they were happy with to get it released. In that regard, I admire their standards in choosing a record label but I thought they were nuts and told them so more than once. They should've released it themselves, internet only or busk on cruises street and sell it out of an old pram if neccessary.

I think they were just tired and worn down and sick of the of being in a van.

Judas Diary were going really well in the mid 90's, released a single that really wasnt their best work and disappeared after that. They were a great live band, their gigs in Roisin Dubh in Galway were legendary, had a bit of success in Germany too.

Anyone mention Sack? They had a song called "laughter minds" which Morrissey is quoted as saying it should be number 1 forever.

There was also a buzz about a band called The Mitcheners in the late 1990s.

Mexican Pets, anyone?

The Young Pretenders from Cork.

Jubilee Allstars.

Pelvis.

The Marbles.

Bawl/Fixed Stars/Pony Club.

The Brillant Trees.

The Young Pretenders from Cork.
. There was quite a bit of fuss about them (much of it in fairness generated by the fact they were on a cool label) back in 97/98. I don't think the promised album ever got released though. I only recall the one single "that's why we lose control" and remember thinking it sailed very close to "Strange Ones" by Supergrass.

The Marbles.. Something In My Eye was a very good song too. Great singing from a guy playing drums.

Bawl/Fixed Stars/Pony Club.
.

Very, very talented guy.

I'll chuck in a couple of more.....

A few more that I haven't seen mentioned, apologies if they have been:

Backwards Into Paradise (who I think shortened to Into Paradise later on)

Cypress, Mine! - have their LP Exit Trashtown somewhere, with the single Justine on it I think. Sugarbeet God was a later single some might remember.

Beethoven - Insane lot these, imagine Stump on dodgy absinthe and bad mussels. Have an EP thingy somewhere as well called 'HimGooleyGooleyManDem' or something, with a brilliant Beatles' Day Tripper cover on it.

Also surprised not to have seen Toasted Heretic yet. Great songs, great titles! 'Drown The Browns' :D

Don't know if these have been mentioned - The Beatless
No they weren't a Beatles tribute band but more of a trippy dippy madchester influenced with some 60's influence too.
There was also a band from Navan called Neon Ash who sounded like Depeche Mode.
Going back further, waaaaaaaaaaay back in the late 60's my Uncle was the drummer in a band called the Pan Pipers who had too singles Stop and Money or Love, the latter made the top 40 in Israel and nowhere else!

Said song on TFI Friday and Chris Evans' "they're going to be huge" quote (youtube link).

Oh yes. The man with the dodgy hairdo. He's been on the "Uncut" cd a number of times - he did a excellent cover of Dylan's Gates of Eden.

Another "band" that could be included in this list is Chicks. (Depending on how loosely the word band is defined)

They had a myspace page last time I checked. Same band for def.

Thought of another one ...It's A Secret - two piece who had a hit in several European countries back in 1986 called 'I Can't Dance'. I know nothing else about them.

Open to correction on whether or not they've splitSaw them in UCD, opening for Turn and the Frank and Walters. I'd heard a single of theirs on the radio a few times. They opened and closed their (not especially long) set with it, which kind of summed it up really.

My brother was the original bass player with the Pets. He also played with Hey Paulette, if anyone remembers them. Currently playing with Crumb. They released an album a couple of years ago called Evenings and Weekends - which is pretty damn good (and not just saying that cos I'm biased.)

I mentioned them in a thread about Razorlight once upon a recently. I think that horrible "America" sounds very like them. You may guess I wasn't quite a fan. There was little I hated more than the spew of celtic-rock bands who did their photoshoots on hill tops and cliff edges casting a glad eye o'er the fair land and sea about them.

Is there anywhere you can get that Marbles Tune "Something In My Eye" online? Used to think that was excellent but then they seemed to vanish off the face of the earth... Any abuse of My Little Funhouse is much deserved... Pack of w*&kers and cretins, they really did think they were the dogs... Turgid Lumberjack image to boot as well.

Treasure On The Wasteland features One of the best choruses ever written and it goes:-

O Ee O Ee O Ee
O Ee O Ee O Ee O Ee O Ee O Ee O Ee O Ee O Ee

Here's a few lines of verse:

There's treasure on the wasteland
Looking for the whiphand
Funny how they missed it
They said goodbye and kissed it
......................................
.....................................
And living on the Northside
Damages a person's pride....

The single was produced by Ultravox's Midge Ure.
(Classic :D)

Prince used the exact same chorus for "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" from Sign "O" The Times and I'm pretty sure that's plagarised too.
