New contract for O'Dea - http://www.celticfc.net/newsroom/news.aspx?id='2007-03-13_0900pc' (http://www.celticfc.net/newsroom/news.aspx?id=%272007-03-13_0900pc%27)
Along with Sheridan and McGeady, this must be the most Irish players in the first team picture at Celtic Park in some time?

Were McCarthy, Morris and Cascarino playing at the same time or different eras ?

Cascarino was long after McCarthy and Morris.
McCarthy, Morris and Bonner would have played together though

Is this a helpful injury update or a critique on O'Shea's ability?

The latter. O'Shea out :)

The complete fuuuukin fool Strachan prefered McManus to O Dea which is unbelievable (not only because he should have blooded him in an old-firm match seeing they've already walked to the title) but because he looked by far the most experienced and assured of the 2 centre halves t in the San Siro. Never fancied Strachan and never will. The 2 titles he's won (presuming this year's is done and dusted) have been uncontested. Rangers F.C. has been a farce for the last 2 years and if George Burley wasn's sacked as Hearts manager in 05/06 I would have fancied them to go on and win the title.

That 5 goal defeat to Artmedia Bratislava will always stick in the minds of true Celtic fans.

Nothing will please you!

Strachan was barely in the job when that farce happened with players that he inherited. He has brought Celtic to places that even the great O'Neill couldn't but you are deteremined not to give him credit!

Strachan is an excellent manager. When was the last time Celtic walked the SPL with such ease? I also think that O'Dea will be as good a player as Richard Dunne and i hope within the next few years they will be our first choice central defenders.

Please God but with all due respect to Scottish football, he'll need a move down to the Premiership in a few years time to test himself on a regular basis against top forwards.

I see that O'Dea has been named in the u21 squad, isn't that an indicator that he won't be in the senior squad?

The amount of time people come on to this forum and give out about things that are not even facts. O Dea not in the squad as he is in the U21, Stephen Carr left, out, No he is injured. This happens time and time again.

O'Dea was called into the U21 squad against Holland, and it wasn't unreasonable to assume he wasn't in the senior squad because of it

I asked the question about O'Dea's inclusion on the u21's, but no assumption was made by me.
Strikes me that there was little communication going on between Given and Stan. The u21 squad is subservient to the senior one. Maybe Given is saying look at the team I could have played if only...

Two years previous.

Celtic manager Gordon Strachan:
"It was very poor, I didn't enjoy it all, and I didn't enjoy watching it.
"Darren O'Dea did well and Paddy showed a wee bit of promise when he came on along with Paul Hartley, who was one of my better picks.
"Artur did well too, but apart from that, we were rather poor"

Sounds like he played well from match reports. Whats the opinion of people who watched it? Will he get/Does he deserve a consistent run of games?

O'Dea played very well for Celtic tonight. He played out of position at left-back and supported McGeady well done the left flank. He brings a presence and personality onto the pitch and I have to say I've yet to be unimpressed by him. He can definately go far in his career - he just has the ability to do so.

He was very angry shouting at Brown today and Brown actually didn't answer back. He must be a big character. :) He also got booked for jumping in for McGeady when he squared up to one of the Kilmarnock players. You need a bit of character like that on occasion.

Good game for him alright. The long ball should be last resort for a defender but he obviously believes in his passing ability.

Another posted disagrees about O'Dea last night in the SPL thread:

O'dea probally at fault for Kilmarnock equalizer so called zoneal marking for corner and he let player wander in behind him.

O'Dea expected to start today in the cup on Sky Sports in an hour.

"Darren always impresses me, and I think everyone knows how highly I rate him. He must be really pleased with himself.

"He has a drive and determination that will take him far in the game.

"He is adding to his ability and is intelligent. He has a future at Celtic."

He didn't do very well today. He's definetely not a left back.

More than likely will start at Left Back on Sunday at Hampden vs Rangers in the League Cup Final (Naylor still injured).

He played left back, but was overlapping a lot

Took his goal very well and I thought it was very mature of him to just tell Lennon he couldn't go much longer at the end of the first half of extra time.

Solid enough performance, took his goal well, very assured on the ball particularly in some tight positions in defence where he was comfortable retaining posession. Happy to either take on his man or at least find a hooped jersey with his outfield pass. Plenty of overlapping runs as well.

High pressure game - great experience for him.

Heres hoping he can retain his place for the remaining 10 or so games of the season and that Strachan doesnt being Naylor back in when he's fit. So far O'Dea has slotted in well and doesnt deserve to be dropped IMO.

He really needs games at the moment & was surprised when Strachan prevented him from going out on loan to Burnley in January.

I think he has great potential and showed today, as he did in the Champions League last season, that he can soak up pressure and won't let the big occasion get the better of him.

I just don't think he will feature heavily in Strachan's plans & a move away from Celtic might be his best option - long term.

Possibly, though Naylor is not the answer at LB. Celtic were crying out for one in the summer and we failed to secure one, likewise in January. He didnt let O'Dea go anywhere because he needed cover (John Kennedy being particualrly doubtful). OK so LB is not his natural/favoured position but he is young and athletic and can do a job there, possibly he might be winning Strachans trust, certainly to play at LB for the forseeable future.... Lets hope so.

I can certainly see a great future with Celtic and internationally. Very composed on the ball and a cracker of a header for the goal.

friend of mine sent me this about that article

I think this was taken from a live interview type session he did on
radio scotland on tuesday bight. i never heard it all but i heard this
bit. they were quizzing him about being involved in champs league and
if he left celtic would he miss it if he had to leave. he said that he
would prefer to be playing football every week somewhere. However he
said ideally he would be playing fro celtic and playing champs league
every week,

Is he Premiership(EPL) standard?

tetsujin1979

Hard to say, he played well in the Champions League against AC Milan 2 season ago, but he's spent the majority of the games since then on the bench.

irishfan86
18/03/2009, 9:39 PM
Based on the little I've seen he's got the potential to go all the way at centre-half, but he is pretty limited as a left-full.

Any team having trouble at the back end should give him a look.

EAFC_rdfl
19/03/2009, 10:39 AM
there's definitely a number of centre halfs in the EPL currently that aren't as good as him. Hes a lot better than Paul McShane at CB anyway, but he never gets a chance to play there for Celtic mores the pity.
