CUT THE CRAP AND LOOK AT THE FACTS...
Sligo Rovers' traditional rivals are Finn Harps. Not Derry City. Not Shamrock Rovers (even though ye' call them "Shams" ) >>>LOL
Galway United's traditional rivals are Athlone Town. FFS, Limerick and Longford are nearer to Galway than Sligo!
Games between SRFC & GUFC are always dubded "Connacht Derby" by the national media and of course the Sligo Champion, Sligo Weeekender, Galway Advertiser, Galway City Tribune, Galway Independent etc etc. Also, the match programmes always welcome people to the Connacht Derby. Both Clubs are from Connacht so, hey, let's all jump on the bandwagon.
Sligo Rovers have won more trophies than Galway United. Some GUFC fans might have an inferiority complex about this but it is a fact. Many of those trophies were won before Galway United came into existence.
There were 800 tickets issued to Galway United for the FAI Cup game in the Showgrounds and around 700 were sold. I know this because I was in charge of them. I brought the money to Sligo so this is an indisputable fact. I missed one of the goals because I was in the office (pre fab) sorting out the money.
Sligo Rovers were issued with 400 tickets for next weekend's game in Terryland.
In recent years, both Sligo Rovers and Galway United have had small home crowds of 400 when things were low so we are all in the same boat. Last season, both Club's had massive home crowds at a few games so there is a massive potential.
There were a few slaps thrown around both in and off the pitch in recent years and with a truck load of ex- Sligo locals putting on the maroon jersey (and vice versa), the rivalry has intensified. And we pawned Don O'Riordan off to ye too:D
Most of the rivalry talk has been dreamed up on foot.ie

Good post.
One thing that was a bit off the mark though is that you seem to be under the impression that we're the only ones who refer to Shams (perhaps because we don't like to call them Rovers).
I live in Cork now, and my Cork City-supporting mates refer to them as Shams.
As for O'Riordan, the mind boggles as to what we could do to get you back for that. :p

That rivarly with Harps has been dreamed up on here as well. Shams have always been Rovers arch enemy, (they probably dont give a sh it) goes back years and years. Ask any older Rovers head and they would all give Shams as the answer.
