From The Star - 08.02.07
Shamrock Rovers have been invited over to Sunderland in two weeks time by the club’s biggest fan - Black Cats chief executive Niall Quinn. The lanky former Ireland striker is a fully fledged Member of Rovers - contributing €40-per-month like over 400 other diehard Hoops supporters. It might be small change compared to the amount of cash Quinn and his consortium have pumped into Sunderland since their summer takeover. But the fans’ money has seen Rovers return from the verge of extinction nearly two years ago to become a once-again vibrant club.
And ahead of the Hoops’ return to the eircom Premier Division, Quinn has offered yet more help to his adopted club. He has opened the door of Sunderland’s state-of-the art Academy to his old Arsenal team-mate Pat Scully and his squad for five days of intensive pre-season training. Rovers will arrive early on Wednesday February 21 and will face local side Durham City that night, while another game has been earmarked for the following Sunday.
And after a satisfying start to pre-season to date, Scully can’t wait to get stuck in over at the Stadium of Light. “I went over at the end of last season with Jonathan Roche (club chairman), Noel Byrne (secretary) and Mark Dempsey (coach) and we met Niall and Roy Keane,” he explained. “I know Niall from Arsenal and Roy from the Irish underage set-up and we had a good chat. “We had a look at the Academy and we are looking forward to training on the quality of pitches they have over there. It will be great for the lads.”
Keane chatted to the Rovers contingent about their First Division title winning season - and specifically about his old club Cobh Ramblers. Scully couldn’t deliver good news on that front however - the Hoops won once and drew three times with the Cork outfit last year. Meanwhile, Scully is currently running the rule over ex-Pat’s player Ryan Casey and Limerick striker Wayne Colbert in training. Rovers have lined up friendlies against Kildare County on Saturday, Dundalk next Tuesday and Waterford United the following Saturday.
Scully has already snapped up experienced defenders Barry Ferguson and Danny O’Connor, Limerick duo Tommy Barrett and Robbie Kelleher and goalkeeper Stephen O’Brien.

Galway also have some sort of partnership with Sunderland. I guess its okay as long as it doesn't take fans away from their actual club - most people support two teams anyway.

Is the Galway thing not just on the fan-side - the club organising big trips over every now and again ?

With regard to Pats and Rovers going over there, I wouldn't have a problem with it. If it's just to play warm up games, use the facilities for training etc, where's the harm ?

no, the galway thing as far as i can get it is a money raiser - planeload over meet keano etc. for a match
then there was talk of them coming over for a friendly mid season here
nothing further than that

In fairness we're talking about a (supposed) business man here. I honestly don't think he'd do this deal unless he had only the best interests of his club (sunderland) at heart.

Galway United have chartered a plane from Galway to Sunderland for the game against Southend and there will also be a friendly in Terryland against Sunderland during the summer. Sunderland previously played a friendly in Terryland in 2000

Pats played them in the 90s, dont rememeber much of it tbh went drinking with the sunderland fans. Would ahve loved to go voer next week but too short notice :(

Shams fans would probably rather see these lads being sold to Sunderland rather than See Bohs flash some cash and they would off like a flash to Dalymount direction as they chase some Glory and European Football.
Since when are Bohs in Europe?
Have i missed something?! :o

I only seen Shams on TV twice last season but i thought they have one or two very promising young lads who played football in the right way, i wonder is this more like a trial that Quinn is looking at i.e. invite the whole club over from a training camp and get a look at these young lads ?
Thats what i was thinking the minute i heard it. Stupid move imo, as if Quinn gives a toss about eL clubs. If he did he would have invested in one.
Some early Sunday morning entertainment is welcome, Rogue Trader :D
God, the conspiracy theorists are out in force today. Maybe just jealous that their clubs didn't get the invite. It will be a very useful and highly motivating five days for the club. Not only can the players learn a lot - Scully can as well.

Pats are playing Sunderland as well, this Wednesday.
Anyone bleating about Sunderland just using this as an exercise in poaching either Pats' or Rovers' best players should stop and consider this: the English transfer window shut on 31st January. Didn't think of that, no?
If they want to cast an eye over potential talent, they'd wait until everyone's fully match fit and playing competitive football. It's called scouting.

Also Shams would not be in position to turn down 5 figure offer for one of their players 15 or 20 thousand would nearly pay the wage bill for a month or pay for the pre season even.
So what Shams players will be going ? My money is on the young Midfielder cant remember the name, i think he got a man of the match award against Bohs or Pats in the cup. Shams really should have thought before accepting this invitation as it is a major step in quality from the first to the Premier and you need to hang on to your best players when you come up, pitty real pitty if they go straight back down but you have been warned.
Regards,
Concerned !
It all depends on Shams ambition to stay up, if they have any. Defintely losing two or three of their top players would be a huge kick in the teeth for them. Maybe with the money they get for those players they would looking at going back down to the first and consolidating themselves and then trying to come up when they are ready.
Shams players can sign pre-contracts outside of the transfer window cant they.

If we have any ambition to stay up?! Are you joking? We're a premier club, three of our best players and Pat Scully only recently signed contracts till 2010... We're not losing and havn't lost any players we want to stay. We're aiming for a high mid-table position!
Consolidating ourselves?!

He has. Did you not read the article? He has also in the past tried to help out the club. Has the sunderland manager invested in your club? After all he loves cork apparently.
Dont know who shams are but Rovers are going for a training camp for 5 days. They have great training facilities and Rovers will never be a feeder club for anyone.

This awful... first Keane makes up with Mother Theresa, then shakes hands with that dingbat McCarthy... bloody hell I was thinking I've no one left to aim my irrational vitriol at... then I look at the RTE guide and see that Scannal tonight is doing a documnentary about the 1-0 win over England in 1995 and the riot that ensued... nice timely reminder of how then as now the FAI do nothing but make fools of themselves on the international stage... hope Delaney and his gimp Stan enjoy it !!
ps...still hate McCarthy and of course Stan showed in 2002 how slimy he was as he supported him then

So let us get this striaght Quinn is not trying to pull the wool over your eyes and get your players on the cheap ? Can you confirm or deny this ? I would rather see Shams hang onto their players and play some sort of football than loose them and then come to the Showgrounds and put 11 men behind the ball plus the 16 seater bus parked in front of the goals, just dont say you boys have not being told, good luck for the new season RT.
See my post above - this has nothing to do with players. It's purely a way for Quinn to do something positive for Rovers. Scully and a few directors have been over already to see their set-up, meet the coaching staff, commercial operation etc.
You can stop worrying about us, it'll be a cold day in hell before anyone pulls the wool over our eyes again. ;)

Pats and Rovers entire squads on trial at sunderland, fans create an "affinity" for Sundireland and go over again for Sunderland games..........
Or it could be what Rovers fans think and umm Quinn likes them.

I'd say this is more accurate tbh. Out of the goodness of his heart Quinn is bring them over ..... yeah right. Its not like Shams haven't been dupped before though it is now
Lads how many Rovers players do you think Sunderland would be poaching? After all this is a team that are well on course for the Premiership this season. I don't want to start the whole EL Premier is better than the Championship 'discussion' again but seriously, you'd swear Keane had realised that last years First Division championship winning squad are just the ticket to keep Sunderland in the Premier next year the way some people are going on

I think that if Sunderland got the Shams lads they are after over for trials they would have to be released by Shams for 6 weeks or could not play for them for the same period.
All this is, is glorified trials, sad that Shams have become Star struck by a team playing in the 2nd tier of the english league system. By the way somebody mentioned that Quinn was a fan as he tried before to help the club how does a Millionaire try to help a club in trouble ? Either he does or he does not simple as wake up lads you are being taken for a wide again by Mr nice guy there is no such thing as a free lunch as the old adage goes.
Nail on the head, Mr Quinn, the nice guy .... came back to Ireland to train young kids ..... in GAA !! Some Shams fan alright, hope you dont have too many more like them though.
In fact, by calling him a 'fan' you are doing a huge injustice to the real 'fans' that resurrected the club from near extinction.

Yawn.....
Rovers go about pre-season preparation in a highly professional manner - and all you can do is moan, moan, moan.....
Okay - we'll go back to the old ways. Fart around for the off-season, and then cobble together a team of has-beens and nobodies a week before the season starts. Is that better???
Oh - and I note that Bohs had a recent trip to Barcelona. That's them rightly fecked so. Those Catalan blackguards have probably pilfered half their squad.

It's actually all a cunning plot jointly hatched by the boards of Pats and Rovers. We need to do up Richmond, they need a whole new stadium. So both clubs are going over on the pretext of pre-season friendlies purely so's we can nick Sunderland's stadium - we get to keep the "Stadium of Light" name and all the red and white seats, Rovers get to keep the rest, Bob's your uncle.

The level of petty bitterness in Irish football is unreal. A famous ex-Ireland international is a Rovers member and has asked the first team over for pre-season. Cue fans of small clubs bleating about us losing our players. You couldn't make it up. Although Nightdub and KJDAC's versions are scarily possible......
