could be wrong on the wexford youths..

I think more people in this country can speak fluent polish than can speak fluent irish....

theres a lot more people out there than you think that can hold their own - and loads of other who after a few days with the cupla focal and away they go again

its still in your head if you were any good at it in secondary - just a matter of waking it up again

I suspect that Shelbourne ultimately derives its name from the Wexford barony of Shelburne, a Norman area of jurisdiction that you seldom hear of outside the county.

As far as I can recall, Shelbourne is generally translated as Síol na mBroinn in the area in Dublin. However, in current circumstances, I feel Síol na mBocht may be a more appropriate translation.

So am I alone in thinking that proper nouns should never be translated? Shamrock Rovers is Shamrock Rovers in any language. Otherwise you could end up with a bilingual mess like Bayern Munich. No one in Italy calls AC Milan AC Milano.

Have the new-age gaeilgóirs not got their hands on that one yet and changed it to "Longfort"? Every other "phort" seems to be changed the "fort" (e.g. aerfort), can't quite understand why.

I was told a few years back, before doing a brief interview on T4, not to
use Gaillimh Aontaithe, no-one in the Gaeltacht would use that team, they would just say "Galway United".

Not sure if it's still running, but TG4 had a hilarious series recently in which the presenter went around Ireland trying to hold conversations in Irish in everyday situations -- street, shops, pubs etc.
One review said he got mostly bemused or hostile responses. The only people who apologised for not being able to speak the language were those interviewed on the Shankill Road in Belfast.

pretty kitsch kind of show - hes pretty excentric himself - and as you know you can edit to show the angle you want - also said the foreigners apologiesed for not knowing the langauge - crazy isint it!
