I decided to open up a new thread, because related to the Celebrity Big Brother, I have somewhat become confused by racism, discrimination, etnic discrimination and culture discrimination. I beleive there must be cross-overs between all, because racism as I saw it, used to be at least, maybe I'm wrong, but about skin colour when you get to the bottom of it.

In relation to CBB, I did watch it, as they are making a big issue of it over here, but I have to say I didnt feel there was a whole lot of racism, there was however plenty of cultural discrimination.

Finally, not completely related, but even in terms of discrimination, I beleive along with those I watched it with the last 2 nights, that jade had a very reasonable arguement, unfortunately due to her background/education/upbringing she put it across in a racist way ( her father was mixed race, so to be calling her racist is somewhat wrong ). Shilpa, in our opinion, has airs and graces about her, which jade was trying to get across, and that there are plenty of people in india, that are quite common, who she needs to realise are her fans and should sympathise with. I think there are more forceful ppl in the show than others, and this has stemmed some sort of bullying, but I beleive the PC racist police have blown this all out of proportion.

I dont think this automatically means you can't be racist.

Thats a stupid thing to say
Does that mean you think only white people can be racist?

This is the point i was making in the other thread no one cared about Shilpa slagging off Jade and her back ground, yet Jade slagging Shilpa's is racist ???

Look at last year when Gallaway , pete Burns and barrymore bullied Jodie Marsh no one really cared , Why was this because its ok to pick on a white girl ?

Well it is racism of sorts, maybe not blatent, but it is definiately bbullying and I'm glad Jade has finally been shown up for what she really is!

paul_oshea

ya it is bullying DRed, but I think people are trying to label it as something somewhat different in my eyes. Therefore I think what we beleive to be racism, or as the general public perceive it to be over here, is therefore different to what is defined.

I honestly think its bullying thats all, mainly because jade is forceful, and shilpa is going round as miss goody two shoes. Her point is valid, how she constructs it and puts it across is the problem in my opinion, which is what everyone seems to be missing.

To further anto1208's point I beleive its a form of positive discrimination almost, because british asians are still seen as ethnic minorities ( and different skin colour )over here, peoples belief/views are getting clouded.

Sorry I wasn't saying because she was of mixed race she isn't racist. That wasn't very clear!

Isn't there already a thread on this?

Pathetic ratings ploy by Ch4. Who really cares anyway & why is this programme still on - i thought the "celebrity" ones were supposed to be shorter...

I'm lost. What's this about her being mixed race? Is she half traveller?

An interesting letter appeared in the (London) Evening Standard yesterday in which a (anonymous) letter writer pointed to a conversation between Jermaine Jackson and Shilpa in which Jackson said of the Goodys: 'They are not like us. We are of colour. They are white trash.' Nice!!!!

Speaking of the Standard, the mixed-race apologists reminded me of the infamous cartoon in late 1982 by Raymond Allen 'Jak' Jackson which pictured an advertising hoarding of a spoof 'snuff' movie with the words 'Coming soon. The ultimate in psychopathic horror. The Irish!' The GLC withdrew advertising in The Standard, but the most interesting thing was that Jackson's own mother was Irish. Sort of quashes the argument that you can't be racist to people you are of the same blood.

Back to the BNP with you so Anto, I've posted this in the original CBB thread, but here it is again,

Danielle has said, 'She (shilpa) is bleaching her skin because she wants to be white

Jo has said, 'Thats why all Indian's are thin, because they eat undercooked food'

Jackiey has said 'That Indian gets on my nerves', whilst repeatedly referring to her as the Indian and not by her name

Jade has called her Shilpa Poppadom, amongst other things. Would you like to be called Anto Potatoe because you're Irish and have it said in a spiteful way?

Danielle's comment in particular is one of the more racist things I've heard in a long while

I'm horrified that you can say something like that.

Taking the name of a perfectly good vegetable and calling it a derogatory term like 'anto' is disgraceful. I'll be petitioning Dahamsta to remove this thread from the public eye. Publishing stuff like this is offensive and should be dealt with using the taste and decency laws.

Firstly, I think it's largely bullying rather than racism of the momentary bits I've seen - I stand to be corrected.

However the reaction to it is quite funny in my opinion. Particularly the 'effigies' with their drawn-on faces on Sky News yesterday:D :D and also with regard to putting dysfunctional people in a room together for weeks for the benefit of a tv company and then complain about the end product.

Since the fourth series where 'normal' people were deemed too boring, the dramatic effect has taken precedence with particular people placed and this is the automatic end result.

CollegeTillIDie

Ok what is going on in Celebrity Big Brother?

India's population is 1.4 billion and Britain's 60 million
Shilpa is 1.4 billion % more attractive than Jade and
Shilpa is also 60 million % more intelligent.
Same goes for the other two female plonkers in their ( Jade's ma and what's her face!)

So it's basic bitchy jealousy behind it all

Bollywood is very underrated outside the Asiatic community.
One of the Bollywood Stars of the 1970's made the Cover of Time Magazine in 1976. Parveen Babi I think is how her name was spelt.

After watching the events a few times I belive it has been (as usual) completely blown out of proportion my the British Media. It was bullying not racism and whilst I disagree with it, its not as if is hasn't happened in the BB house before.

Also I think that Danielle said thing that could be deemed a lot more racist than anythin Jade said two spring to mind. After one Jade Vs Shilpa argument she said something along the lines of "She should f*vk off home" another time she or someone else asked do Indian's eat with their hands to which she replied someting like ""You don't know where those hands have been."

i have to say i find it racist, they are obviously laughing at her, looking down on her, and making sneering comments about her colour and her nationality
i honestly cant see how this is not racism, i mean if it was a joke i could understand but there is a clear intent with it

i started watching BB, but as soon as that Chav and her family walked into the household, i turned off

interesting, i thought it was a governing thought that this was racism, which i didnt agree with. Think you are right about the British media doing their usual blowing it out of proportion. The brits brought civilisation to india, but they left it there. The brits come across all PC, but in reality they are all racists, we being irish should know this more than anyone!!

I also didnt agree with myself watching BB and moreso friday night telling the taxi driver to turn up the radio so i could hear what jade had to say! :( or what!!

So Bennocelt, here is my question in a more polite form -

Do you not think that making comments like you did about English people - or more accurately - young white English people, while saying this -

i dont like the english, as if i care if you call me a racist!

kind of makes your opinion invalid as you have shown yourself

a - to make comments that would generally be defined as a racist.

b - to not care what people think about those comments.

Splitting hairs?

I'm pointing out that the use of these terms in this kind of debate is pretty ironic.

Its not splitting hairs at all really, its racist or its not, and Chavs is clearly not in any way shape or form. Since this sorry episode took place you'll see people playing the race card at every opportunity which is just plain wrong.

Fair enough, although my original point is to show that the use of these terms and making such generalisations, while accusing others of being racist, kind of hinders your whole arguement.

In fairness to POS(correct me if I am wrong) but I think the point being made is there is a pervading culture with a lot of young wans that celebrates crudity and witless behaviour while ironically Shipla a middle class indian represented a lot of the old fashioned English stereotypical "virtues" of restraint, stiff upper lip under fire etc.

ya, nail on head, well read cheifo. two sides to every coin if you like. I also thought her skin-colour clouded ( maybe not the most accurate word here) a lot of this.

I have found from my ( relatively short ) time here over the last few years, that there are "two" ( well not only two, but the two most easily categorised ;) ) types of white-brits, shilpa-types, the middle class and the "other" ones that cheifo mentions. There is obviouslly an in-between, but I was sorta making that sweeping generalisation with tongue in cheek.

Heard on the radio this morning Jade goody is off to India. So obviously some tv production company or SKY has thought of cashing in and getting a fly on the wall documentary where we see the human side of Jade, hugging little children, learning about a different culture, confronting her prejudice. Heart rendending stuff no doubt. Also available on SKY HD.
