I'm a little disappointed in the supposed ticket sales from Derry's end.
If it's true that we've only sold about 5500 tickets.
FFS we were able to take 3000 to Scotland for the Gretna game and 3000 to Paris for the PSG game.
I think the fact that it's on a cold December has alot to do with it.
Bring back Summer football............................oh wait this is summer football:eek:

Again, I'm bemused by people's enthusiasm for a 25,000 crowd (1000% more than the better teams get week on week). I'd much rather us add 500-1000 regular attenders rather than drag up 10,000 people who go to a game once a decade.

Agree the Final for me is about a day out for the regulars that
watch week in week out. A reward if you like, for watching the rubbish as well as the good matches, if that means there is
only 5 thousand at it who cares
All well and good but that never happens...well for the country teams it doesnt. I mean we had about 1500 at every game 2003/2004 and yet we brought almost 10,000 in 2003 and 8,000 in 2004 to the cup finals. People are fickle and enjoy a good day out!

we brought 8,000 in 2004 to the cup finals.
Very good work indeed seeing as the official attedance was something like 7,500 for the '04 Cup Final. Did Waterford bring minus 500 fans with them that day?
Did Waterford bring minus 500 fans with them that day?
That was pretty close to the figure alright!
It was just under 10,000 actually and I used a rounded up figure as with the 2003 figure, simply to show how fickle people can be! My argument was in relation to the day being for regulars and not people who love the day out

Absolute Rubbish, i have never heard so much elitist garbage in my life
how on earth can we increase our fanbase, if we cant attract additional support for the FAI cup final how can we increase it for a league game against Bray

100% correct. How on earth do we expect to increase the crowds. People aren't going to go and watch St Pat's/Derry v Waterford/Bray. This game is a showpiece and should be used as a marketing tool. This is the most coverage we get in the national media throughout the seasnon.
To confine the FAI Cup final to the die-hards is the type of insular attitude that is killing the league.
I can see where the original poster was coming from, but the post was misguided at best.

There is a insignificant correlation between going to one match a decade and becoming a regular attender at games. FACT.

100% correct. How on earth do we expect to increase the crowds.By attracting some of the 3-5,000 Derry fans who are going to the final who don't regualrly go to the Brandywell.
People aren't going to go and watch St Pat's/Derry v Waterford/Bray.Well then why are we trying to attract them?
This game is a showpiece and should be used as a marketing tool. Agree. It SHOULD have been used as a marketing tool.
This is the most coverage we get in the national media throughout the seasnon. If you define national as Irish Republic, then yes you are correct. However the local NI and English papers, which dominate the market it Derry (like it or not) gave infinitely more coverage to our European run.
To confine the FAI Cup final to the die-hards is the type of insular attitude that is killing the league. You can't kill something that has been dead for a long time. There are a lot of defendants in the death of EL football, approximately 4 million at last count.
I can see where the original poster was coming from, but the post was misguided at best.It may have been misguided but it wasn't misinformed.

Well we agree on that then.
Well then why are we trying to attract them?
My point was that games against Waterford and Bray aren't going to attract them into the eircom League. If something like the cup final gets them in, then perhaps they may get into the habit of going and that's when you'll see the casual fan at the lesser games. At least in an ideal world.

Fair point. My post was clumsily phrased. However, given that the vast majority of clubs are in the Irish Republic this is an ideal opportunity to capitalise on the publicity down here, which is at it's peak for the season.
You can't kill something that has been dead for a long time. There are a lot of defendants in the death of EL football, approximately 4 million at last count.
Already dead???? I don't think so. Perhaps the game on this island isn't in the healthiest of shape but to write it off like that is being a bit pessimistic. If you really believe that, why do you bother going to the games?

im referring to your preference for ONLY regulars to turn up for cup finals
i think that is an elitist rediculous comment, any right minding person would WISH (not think it will happen) but wish that landsdowne was packed to the rafters every cup final

Here's what I said as a reminder
Again, I'm bemused by people's enthusiasm for a 25,000 crowd (1000% more than the better teams get week on week). I'd much rather us add 500-1000 regular attenders rather than drag up 10,000 people who go to a game once a decade. That doesn't equate to "a preference for ONLY regulars to turn up for cup finals" and has absolutely nothing to do with "elitism".
It simply means I struggle to see why people get so excited by huge cup final crowds when, based on past finals, there is zero correlation between getting a big cup final crowd and improving league attendences.
back on topic
14,000 tickets sold in TOTAL by Thursday night
that too me is a healthy sales
definitely pick up a lot on the day as that is the Irish mentality - this crowd could very well exceed expectations now

agree 100% with One Red Army
the FAI cup final bears no correlation between league games - its an "event" and the success rate in converting the event junkies into becoming league goers is poor - not because it hasnt been attempted - its just event junkies by their nature arent interested in the week in week out brand of match going - for them its all about the "one off" big occassion

According to the FAI website derry are brining down 10,000 fans tomorrow
http://www.fai.ie/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1513
So 14,000 or a lot more than that at the game would not be a surprise if that is the case.
Good luck Derry tomorrow. Great supporters, well run club, sorry Pats, but I have to support my northern cousins in this one.
2002 Cup final, Dlk v Bohs, at least two busloads of derry fans pulled into Tolka to support us, they played Limerick in the Lge cup final first or 2nd leg the prev night, a fantastic gesture.

Jesus that is a terrifying prospect. A 90,000 (or whatever) stadium with 14,000 in it. Scary.
Next years final should be in the wonderful tallaghtfornia if it's finished.
Or in the Brandywell. Actually, all finals should be in the Brandywell. Forever. :D

If/when Tallaght is ever completed I think it's to be done in phases like Athlone. I don't think it'll be in any state for a cup final for some years. I think Tolka (should Shels still be in it) and Turners Cross will be the only semi-fit stadiums for a cup final next season and maybe Dalymount at a stretch.

RDS would be my bet. It's supposed to be done up to a 15,000 seater for next year.
Did anyone get an attendance for todays game?. I didn't hear one being announced.

RTE put it down as 16,022.
Thanks Dancinpants, I heard a 22 alright but missed the 16,000!.
Thats an impressive attendance
Hats off to the Derry and St. Pats fans

Yeah im happy with that crowd, i would have guessed more, but musnt have been.
But i was just thinking today, say next year Derry & Cork get to the final, and they both bring 10,000 fans to the final, thats 20,000 people, not including neutrals & day-trippers.
What ground woud be able to hold this with Lansdowne not being available and Croker probably not being an option:confused:

So what everybody seems to agree is a) The RDS will host next year's FAI Cup Final and b) the capacity is around 15,000 and that is about as good as it can be there.
Well only one thing for it so.. The FAI need a UCD V Bray Wanderers Cup Final next season :D

The RDS is being redeveloped at the moment, it did hold about 15000 but will hold up around 20000 or a bit more when its finished.
